Bench David Carr! 2

Okay, so now that the Texans have played their first game and David Carr has sucked and shown no signs of improvement, I imagine that a few of you have possibly changed your tune when it comes to the QB. Let's face it and stats only tell part of the story, Carr looked awful. He completed 42.9% of his passes(last in the league), threw for 70 yards(tied-last), 3 interceptions(tied-most), was sacked 5 times(2nd most), and compiled a QB rating of 12.1(dead last again). However, you did not have to look at a box score to realize that Carr had the poorest day of any NFL QB. He was back to his old habits of holding on to the ball for too long, not looking off his intended receiver, and throwing the ball into dangerous spots when no opportunity presented itself. It appeared that his head was completely out of the game, that he was just going through the motions, that he did not care about the outcome. This was most obvious when, after firing an inexplicable pass into triple coverage and getting intercepted by Troy Vincent, Carr just stood motionless and did not react to try to tackle Vincent or protect himself. Carr showed no talent and no heart. That is a formula for bad statistics and more importantly, losing.

More to the point, however, it is difficult to imagine seeing this guy ever becoming a successful NFL starter. Can anyone remember a single player in the past 10 years who started his career with 3 poor/mediocre seasons and then all of the sudden became a pro-bowler, became great? No you cannot, because this scenario has never happened. Good quarterbacks do not have 3 consecutive poor seasons. For the most recent example of a situation like the Texans' with Carr, you do not have to look past the last expansion team, the Cleveland Browns, and their franchise player and first draft pick, Tim Couch. Couch was given 4 seasons(with games missed due to injury) to prove himself and it was not until the 4th season, when he was replaced by Kelly Holcomb, that the Browns showed flashes of excellence and made the playoffs. Because of their vested interest in Couch, the Browns gave him every opportunity to prove himself but ultimately his poor play continued, the boo-birds arrived, and Couch was not only a troubled QB, but a troubled man. He cried about his slight from the fans and appeared to be irreparably scarred from all of the losing and finger pointing. Couch never recovered and to this point, neither have the Browns who are in their 7th season.

Is there any indication at this point that a similar situation will not play out in Houston this year? The Texans are a struggling team who is holding on to their poster boy seemingly until the inevitable happens and the Browns situation replays itself. Why not jump the gun a little bit and call for Carr's neck now, while there are still 15 games and hope remaining for this, the Texans' 4th season. If anything, the defense appeared to be much improved and held the Bills to a very respectable 22 points and only one touchdown, although they battled poor field position all game long. The offense has proven playmakers in Domanick Davis and Andre Johnson and could be ignited by a fresh voice in the huddle and a better decision making quarterback in Dave Ragone. Why not make the change now, with hope for this season? Why wait until the end when the team has a losing record, the fans are irritated, and David Carr's spirit is so completely broken that he will not even be able to catch on as a backup elsewhere? The Texans need to bench Carr now while they still have a chance to make something of this season not only for their good, but believe it or not, for Carr's too. Another season of poor production under Carr will only lead this team into the inevitable fate of becoming consistently bad or mediocre, a loser franchise. A change at QB now is best for everyone's interest.

No offence dude but 1st off, a few paragraphs would have made that so much easier to read (just for future reference)...

The only way Carr is going to get benched (which deep down we all really hope he doesn't) is Carr himself or the O-Line and him combined. Unless there is someone who can throw quicker around then deal with the fact that we have Carr under centre and needing help...

I think some of you Carr haters need to see if you can stand behind our sorry excuse for an O-line for 5 seconds. Then, he has to deal with AJ being tripled teamed and Bradford out there wandering around in la-la land. Personally, I don't care if they bench Carr for a game, but Ragone won't do any better. Nobody would do significantly better. It's an impossible job.

OK, I'm sure Michael Vick could do a lot of running. There, that's one QB who would make a big difference on this team right now.

Yes, there are better QBs than Carr, but we don't have any of them and we can't get any of them.

How quick do you want him to throw? He wasnt even done with his three step drop when he was running for his life. If you bench anyone it would be the whole offense. It was a horrid showing of the whole offensive team, not just David Carr. If he wouldnt have been there we would have been blanked. He made mistakes but they were due to him running for his life or getting drilled.

Bills have a pretty good D, believe it or not. They make alot of QB's look like that. Maybe it's not all Carr.

Even if they did bench him it would be Banks not Ragone. I'll take Carr over Banks. GO TEXANS

I'm willing to bet that either Ragone or Banks get a better rating than 12.1 for the game.

Put a spin on that QB rating, Carr . Anyone that thinks Carr is the QB for the Texans is either related to him, or living off his income in some fashion.

The dude just plain stinks it up, game aftert game.

I have to go against all of you homers in this one. Carr did not look out of the game. If you watched he was his hardest critic and when he was on the phone with Palmer they got into it. He does not feel comfortable with the offense. Palmer is calling plays that just do not fit our talent. We need to be an agressive team, that is constantly attacking a defense. Bottomline, did you see how Carr was throwing the ball when he did, he looked great, much more accurate and what a cannon. If he could have 3 seconds and a partially open receiver he would do well. I think he needs a safety net, someone other than Bruener and Murphy that can sit in the zone or beat a LB for a pass. I think we should sign Teyo Johnson and then we have a legitimate threat at TE so Carr knows he at least has someone to throw to.

If I hear about Carr's cannon arm one more time I am going to puke. He has no accuracy. Did anyone watch the plays where he had time? It was embarrassing.

For all of you who are quick to put it on the O Line and want to say that Carr would be much better if we upgraded the line, I ask you this "If Carr is so great, why can't he take advantage of the times that he has protection?" We have fifteen more games to see what we have in this guy before we exercise our option on his contract. We need to measure Carr for the rest of the season on his performance when he has good protection.

It's probably hard for Carr to predict when he's going to get that "elusive" protection to take advantage of it - at least on a consistent basis if not once in a while.

Hard to put the issue (issues?) on one part of the team or the coaches. It's looking more like a complete cluster......
