Bud Adams wants to hire new Titans coach on the cheap
Whoever takes the new Titans head-coaching job should be prepared to be one of the lowest-paid head coaches in the NFL.

Terry McCormick of TitanInsider reports that the job will pay about $2.5 million a year. Good money for most of us, but a far cry from what Jeff Fisher was making: If Fisher had coached the 2011 season as planned, he would have made $6.5 million.

Titans owner Bud Adams paid Fisher a buyout and also owes former defensive coordinator Chuck Cecil about $1 million. With all the money Adams is paying to coaches who are no longer with the team, he’s not going to break the bank for a new coach.

Titans offensive line coach Mike Munchak remains the favorite to land the job, while Titans offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger, Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey and Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell are also candidates.

The average salary for a rookie NFL head coach is between $2-2.5 million. Kubiak got $2 million/year on his first contract. The exception is a college coach lured to the NFL (ala Harbaugh).

Found this list of NFL HC salaries for the 2007-8 season. I would suspect that these salaries, especially those with previous HC experience have significantly escalated by the 2010-11 season.........and probably logarithmically.

Bud still certainly isn't entertaining anyone that would challenge the "low ball" option. And, BTW, there are coordinators that are bringing in over $2.5 million/year.

Well Bud will go inside of the organization. He wants to hire for cheap. That is to nobody's surprise.

ESPN reported that Phillips was the highest paid D coordinator.

A source told ESPN.com senior NFL writer John Clayton that Phillips' deal is worth $2.1 million over three years. The contract makes Phillips the highest-paid defensive coordinator in the NFL

However, this couldn't be correct. ESPN also reported that Dom Capers 2007 contract with the Dolphins was higher than that.

The Miami Dolphins have reached an agreement with defensive coordinator Dom Capers on a deal that will make him the highest-paid assistant coach in the NFL.

Capers' new deal is for three years and an estimated $8.1 million, team sources confirmed. His salary in 2007 will be $2.6 million, equal to that of Washington Redskins assistant head coach/defense Gregg Williams, but Capers will get raises of at least $100,000 per year in 2008 and 2009.

Of course, IIRC Phillips was to be paid $3 million for the 2011 year by Dallas. So that took some burden off of McNair in his offer to entice him to Houston.........since he would still get the difference paid to him by Jerry.
