I remember thinking after every loss this season that OK, we had FINALLY found every possible way to lose a game in extravagant fashion. Until the next week came of course. Nothing like recognition for being the most exciting loser team in the NFL!!

1. Houston Texans

The Texans opened the season by upsetting the Indianapolis Colts and seemed poised to make the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. They gave fans a wild ride, but instead, they melted down in scintillating fashion. Houston played in four of the top-10 most exciting games of the season, including a Week 10 loss to Jacksonville on a Hail Mary pass on the last play of the game. A week later, they lost to the New York Jets on a last-second touchdown pass by Mark Sanchez to Santonio Holmes.

Notice how the top 3 "exciting" teams are losers. Excitement, according to the author, is heartbreak.

So if excitement is heartbreak, and heartbreak is a heart attack. Does excitement equal heart attack?
 
If these outcomes truly generate feelings of excitement on the part of Texans fan, I expect that next year we should see a regular new addition to the tradition of tailgating on Kirby so that fans can "prolong" game excitement.

I'd rather grind out wins 13 - 3 every week then sit through a 6 - 10 season that earns plaudits for being "exciting"

I think by "exciting" the author might mean unexpected or last-second outcomes to games.

I had to look up "scintillating"....and I'm still not sure what the writer is trying to say with it's use.
 
I was on the edge of my seat thru a lot of losses. It was a crazy season, and yes it was exciting. The Texans found new ways to lose week after week. Just think how the teams we beat felt: We lost to WHO???"

To me, that's an indication of just how painfully close this team is. I mean, we had that many close losses with one of the worst defenses in the history of the game. And our close losses weren't against crappy teams, either.

That Raven game almost killed me. I think the Jet game DID kill me.

I'll never forget the Ravens Monday night game. Our beloved "Greatest Losers". I will always remember that game because it was the moment that I realized I'm truly in it for the long haul. That while I do want this team to win, I sure do love watching them try regardless of the outcome.

Now some of you may find that offensive since the purpose of the game is to actually win, but it was profound for me. The honeymoon was over. The delusion that we were "finally good" had officially been snuffed out and I was okay with it. The Texans were still heartbreaking and better at it than ever before. They are worth the cost of every ticket, every 5 am road trip from Austin. Every watch party that ended 30 minutes after the game because every one was so dejected.

While the game's purpose may be to win, the fan's purpose is to buy tickets, fill the stadium and hope, for 2 hours and 45 minutes that our favorite team will win. If they do, the satisfaction is a bonus. When they lose, the dejected sunken, sick feeling is a side effect. Much like a hangover is a side effect of enjoying too much alcohol.

I can't wait for Houston Texans football in 2011 or 2012, whatever, whenever.
