And just like that, Texas has completely reloaded in terms of coaching.

OC Greg Davis and DC WIll Muschamp are gone. The new Co- OC are former Boise State OC Byran Harsin and former running back coach Major Applewhite. The new DC is former Mississippi State DC Manny Diaz. The combination of Harsin/Applewhite is a HUGE upgrade over Davis and Diaz may be the second coming of Muschamp.

Look out rest of college football...Texas is back!!!!

Yeah Co-Coordinators can work if there is at least 1 good coach to the duo. Texas has done the Co-Coordinator thing before. During the National Championship year there were two co-coordinators on defense: Chizik and Akina. The next year(when Young left) the team went 10-3 with Chizik and Akina. This led to Chizik taking the head coaching spot at Auburn. The next year with Akina and Mac Duff the D struggled and Muschamp was brought in the following year.

I think what this means is that Harsin will be the lead and help Major out. Harsin is great and I suspect in a couple of years, Harsin will leave to be a HC elsewhere and Major transitions into sole OC. It is a way to get Major a saftey net as I see him as the "heir apparent."

Texas won 5 games this season. It was the first time the Texans won more games than the longhorns in the same season...and the Texans play 5 more games than UT!!!

Think how sad that statement is for a moment. The Texans play 16 games and prior to this season have never had more wins than the University of Texas football team which plays only 12. And, quite frankly without the lucky play in DC, KC, and Oakland, they still may not have done it!

That said, I am not predicting a national championship, but I think they will be a force to be reckoned with and have a chance to win every game next year. Sadly we cannot say the same about the Texans.

Manny Diaz, if I remember correctly, is a FSU alum and was being considered for the defensive coordinator position on Jimbo Fisher's staff but we went with Mark Stoops. It'll be good for Diaz to learn under Muschamp.

Chizik was at Iowa State before Auburn.

That defense totally fell apart toward the end of the 2006 season. There were rumors that Chizik and Akina clashed and the product on the field paid the price.

Akina was trying to coach the team to respect the run but still play the pass and Chizik was coaching the defense to go on the run all the time.

Chizik's idea was that if a team cant run on you then they cant move the ball, but that backfired in the games were teams used play action again, and again, and again... like the Nebraska and Kansas St games.

I expect the defense to be better next year with Akina running it himself even tho the secondary will need to rebuild and the DEs are graduating.

Now it is

OC/RB: Major Applewhite

DB: Jerry Gray

OL: Stacy Searles

Looks like major upgrades across the board.

basically Muschamp got the de facto 'HC in waiting slot' and Akina saw the writing on the wall. if Texas really wanted him to stay, he would have.

like previous posters have said, if they don't get better QB play it won't matter.

Texas will be highly motivated next year, that is for sure. Lots of scores to settle.

Although Gray isn't a Mack Brown guy, him coming back to Austin is a huge get and will be immense in recruiting efforts.

I think it had to do with him knowing he would never get another chance at the DC job. He was demoted for Muschamp. When Muschamp was named Head Coach in waiting he figured with Muschamp as Head Coach, no real top flight D coach would want to be the DC and rather Akina could have been the DC in name only with some power.

Instead, Mack made it obvious that Akina was not the guy and he figured he would get a better chance to move up in Arizona.
