2011 NFL free agents: who should the Texans target?

BetaV1

Rookie
In case you don't know or haven't heard the news, McNair will keep Kubiak on board so long as the defense sees "drastic changes." A pretty drastic change in itself is the shift from unproven new-comers using the Texans as their sandbox to Wade Phillips as defensive coordinator. I think, however, that we'd all be in agreement with the defense needing a more drastic change than just the coordinator.

Sure, the draft will help, but if McNair is serious about these "drastic" changes, then I assume we're going to see a fairly aggressive dive into free agency this year. Here's a list of the general defensive free agents, all via footballsfuture.com. If you could make a push to sign any number of these players, who would they be? Let's try and be realistic here though as we clearly won't get every pro-bowler on the list, as many of them will likely re-sign with their current team. (linemen and linebackers on the first post in this thread, defensive backs and safties will be on the second post) The list may be slightly out of date, but from what I've glanced at, it seems accurate. If anyone has any additions, feel free to add them.

2011 NFL Free Agent Defensive Linemen
By: Roshan Bhagat

Top Defensive Ends:

Ray Edwards, MIN - Edwards made a name for himself with a 3-sack game against Dallas in the Divisional Round, but that was simply an exclamation point of a terrific season. Is his production a product of having 3 Pro Bowlers playing next to him? Edwards was tendered with a 1st round tag this year and it doesn’t seem teams are willing to take that risk quite yet. If he repeats his performance, or improves upon it, next year will be much different. The Vikings will have to pay a steep price to keep him.

Richard Seymour, OAK – Though Seymour still hasn’t signed his franchise tag, he and the Raiders are working on a contract extension. It’s very likely that Seymour will remain in Oakland for at least another short, multi-year contract given how much Oakland paid to acquire him.

Mathias Kiwanuka, NYG – The Giants love having a deep, talented defensive line, so it would be odd to see them let Kiwanuka go. Even though he notched just 3 sacks last season while starting 6 games, Kiwanuka’s flexibility as a pass rusher from end and tackle allow the Giants to get creative in getting after the passer with just a defensive line.

Tamba Hali, KC – It took some time for Hali to make the conversion to outside linebacker, but after making the successful transition, it seems that Tamba Hali is due for another contract in Kansas City. He’s still a long reach from being an elite player, but he’s consistent with still some upside.

Marcus Spears, DAL – Spears had a mildly disappointing season last year and was outplayed by backups at times. It should come as no surprise that the Cowboys reportedly tried to move him in the offseason. If the same trend continues where one of their backups truly emerges, the Cowboys may have few problems in allowing Marcus Spears to walk.

Shaun Ellis, NYJ – The Jets have far too many key free agents to make him a priority, but losing Ellis would just make the Jets’ weakest position, even weaker. Ellis is still productive from the 5-technique with a challenging blend of size and speed for offensive tackles to handle. His request for a long-term extension was rejected by the Jets, but it’s something they could potentially address next offseason depending on how much they’re forced to spend on their other key free agents.

Other Notable Free Agents:

Trevor Pryce, BAL
Chris Kelsay, BUF
Charles Johnson, CAR
Mark Anderson, CHI
Matt Roth, CLE
Jason Hatcher, DAL
Stephen Bowen, DAL
Cliff Avril, DET
Reggie Hayward, JAC
Brian Robison, MIN
Derrick Burgess, NE
Victor Abiamiri, PHI
Ryon Bingham, SD
Jacques Cesaire, SD
Victor Adeyanju, STL
Stylez White, TB
Dave Ball, TEN
Jacob Ford, TEN

Top Defensive Tackles:

Haloti Ngata, BAL – One of the league’s best franchise cornerstones (an annual article that will again be published later this summer) will not go anywhere. Coach Harbaugh has said he has “every intention” of making Ngata “a Raven forever.” As good as Ngata has been on the field, I’m equally impressed that he hasn’t pushed for a contract renegotiation after signing his rookie contract, where he’s been vastly underpaid. Ngata has earned every penny he will receive on the forthcoming lucrative contract.

Brandon Mebane, SEA – At only 6’1, Mebane has the natural leverage and quickness to give interior linemen fits. Though his numbers were merely average, his impact on the field was anything but that. Mebane has the work ethic and the tools to be a dominant defensive tackle for next decade. The Seahawks will try everything in their power to ensure that each of those years will be in Seattle.

Aubrayo Franklin, SF – After putting together a nice season at nose tackle, the 49ers placed the franchise tag on Franklin who has yet to report to OTA’s. Based on the Crabtree holdout a year ago, it seems the 49ers have the will to endure holdouts. If the Niners are firm on their position and want to see one more high-level year from Franklin, he’ll have to wait one more season before receiving some stability.

Johnny Jolly, GB – Jolly’s ongoing legal issues make him an interesting player in the league. He had an outstanding season at defensive end a year ago. Though he had only a single sack, he also recorded 10 pass deflection and one incredibly athletic interception. If the legal issue could take care of itself, Jolly will have the opportunity to sign a well-sized contract, either in Green Bay or elsewhere, depending on how the rest of the defensive line performs.

Cullen Jenkins, GB – Jolly’s counterpart on the right side will also be entering his contract year. Jenkins is a much better pass rusher than Jolly, though not quite as consistent. Prior to his injury in 2008, Jenkins was working on a Pro Bowl season (through 4 games). With a full offseason in the weight room and on the practice field, Jenkins may be able to turn it up a notch to earn another contract extension in Green Bay.

Pat Williams, MIN – I very much doubt that Williams will play anywhere but Minnesota. He’s still an effective run stopper who is winding down his playing days. He threatened to retire early this offseason before deciding to return. If he wants to play, the Vikings will surely be happy to have him back.

Other Notable Free Agents: Bryan Robinson, ARI
Gabe Watson, ARI
Alan Branch, ARI
John McCargo, BUF
Nick Hayden, CAR
Tank Tyler, CAR
Robaire Smith, CLE
Ronald Fields, DEN
Eric Foster, IND
Atiyyah Ellison, JAC

Travis Johnson, SD
Ray McDonald, SF
Clifton Ryan, STL

2011 NFL Free Agent Linebackers
By: Roshan Bhagat

Lamarr Woodley, PIT – Woodley has developed into the league’s best left outside linebacker, forming a terrifying tandem in Pittsburgh. The two have accounted for 50 combined sacks over the last 2 years. With that in mind, Pittsburgh won’t let Woodley get away.

David Harris, NYJ – Though Harris is one of the league’s best, young linebackers, the Jets may just not have the money to pay him. They’re looking at extensions to Revis, Mangold, and Ferguson in the next 2 years, in addition to a pair of free agent receivers and nearly acquired Antonio Cromartie. They’ll most likely make Harris one of their top priorities after the big 3, but Harris may be able to get more money elsewhere if he isn’t tagged. We’ll see what he decides.

David Hawthorne, SEA – At 25, Hawthorne is another one of the league’s emerging linebackers. He’s relatively unknown, but was outstanding in Lofa Tatupu’s absence a year ago. Racking up 117 tackles, 4 sacks, 8 stuffs, and 3 interceptions, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a team make a big play at Hawthorne and the throw the bank and pry him from Seattle via restricted free agency.

Shawne Merriman, SD – Merriman has a lot riding on this upcoming year for his financial future. Coming off injury, his mere 4-sack season didn’t seem as disappointing, but he can’t afford to let that happen again. This will most likely be his last year in San Diego based on their other free agents-to-be, but he won’t be able to break the bank on his name alone. He needs to return to form.

Kirk Morrison, JAC – The Jaguars were smart in acquiring Kirk Morrison who has received a mixed bag of opinions from pundits. To some he’s a great run stopper, but to others he just racks up garbage tackles and is at least partially at fault for the leaky Raiders run defense. This year will squash the debate and we should get to see the real Kirk Morrison.

Paul Posluszny, BUF – Posluszny had his best season to date, yet still missed 4 games. If he can stay on the field, he has the potential to become of the league’s best middle linebackers. Unless he struggles moving to the 3-4, the Bills will be glad to have him for many years to come.

Chad Greenway, MIN – For three years, Greenway has been a consistent linebacker for the Vikings. He’s an instinctive, well-rounded player who is effective in taking on any assignments. With a lack of depth at linebacker, the Vikings won’t allow Greenway to walk away.

Manny Lawson, SF – Word from the Lawson camp indicates that the former 1st round pick is looking for a contract similar to the one Calvin Pace received a few years back (6 years, $42 million). With only 12 sacks in his 4 year career (6.5 last year), he’ll receive a rude awakening if he doesn’t come to his senses soon. Unless he takes a huge stride forward, he’ll find little luck in free agency.

2011 NFL Free Agent Defensive Backs
By: Roshan Bhagat

Top Cornerbacks:

Champ Bailey, DEN – Though several other corners have leapfrogged Bailey over the last couple years, he still remains one of the better consistent corners even at his age. He allowed no touchdowns in 2009 and while he’s set to earn $13 million this season, there have been no talks of a contract extension as far as we know. The Broncos may be waiting to see how Bailey performs this season before deciding what type of contract to offer him.

Johnathan Joseph, CIN – The Bengals’ corners awakened last year to help lead a defense that played much better than expected. Joseph is physical and aggressive and is well on his way to developing into one of the league’s better corners. The team was expected to have extended either, or both, of their tandem this offseason, but nothing has yet materialized.

Eric Wright, CLE – Wright, who will be 25 later this year, has already shown numerous signs that he will develop into a fine cornerback. He’s been a starter for the Browns since he was a rookie and has steadily progressed with each season. The organization is very high on Wright and will make him a priority next year after seeing how large a leap he takes this year.

Richard Marshall, CAR – Marshall was only given a 2nd round tender this offseason, which many thought made him an attractive Restricted Free Agent possibility over the summer. Marshall is a very physical corner who loves to get involved in the run game. Over his first four seasons he’s averaged, 84 tackles, 9 deflections, 3 picks, and a sack. The Panthers seem to have no intention of extending him this offseason.

Carlos Rogers, WAS – Rogers has been a solid cover corner over the last several years, but has gone unrecognized for the most part because of his hands of stone. The Redskins have an improving defense and losing one of their best players in the secondary would be a major setback.

Tramon Williams, GB – Tramon Williams is expected to start this year if Al Harris begins the year on the PUP. The Packers are very high on this instinctive corner who figures to be the future of the team’s secondary along with Nick Collins. Though they were reluctant to extend Williams this offseason, they did place the highest tender on him to ensure they would retain him.

Antonio Cromartie, NYJ – Cromartie is one of several big names the Jets acquired over the offseason to help them “get over the hump.” He was heavily criticized for his lack of effort at times in San Diego in addition to his unwillingness to help out in run defense. Cromartie is your typical gambler, who may have found his ideal fit in New York.

Other Notable Free Agents:
Michael Adams, ARI
Brian Williams, ATL
Fabian Washington, BAL
Chris Carr, BAL
Drayton Florence, BUF
Corey Graham, CHI
Brandon McDonald, CLE
Chris Houston, DET
Will Blackmon, GB
Fred Bennett, HOU
Brandon Carr, KC
Lito Sheppard, MIN
Usama Young, NO
Stanford Routt, OAK
Ellis Hobbs, PHI
Ike Taylor, PIT
William Gay, PIT
Karl Paymah, SF
Josh Wilson, SEA
Kelly Jennings, SEA
Justin King, STL
Ronde Barber, TB
Elbert Mack, TB
Tye Hill, TEN

Top Safeties:

Antoine Bethea, IND – Along with Reggie Wayne and Robert Mathis, Bethea has been absent from the Colt’s mandatory minicamps in search of a new deal. Bethea has every bit as good as a healthy Bob Sanders in the secondary, but was only given a 1st round tender this offseason. With Manning also due for a new contract, it’ll be interesting to see if the Colts have enough money to meet Bethea’s demands.

Quintin Mikell, PHI – Though the Eagles have struggled to find an adequate starting free safety, Quintin Mikell’s emergence in the past two years at strong safety has made a big impact on the defense. After making the possible mistake of letting Brian Dawkins go a couple years too early, the Eagles won’t soon let that happen again with Mikell who still has several years in front of him.

Tanard Jackson, TB – Jackson hasn’t received much publicity since his standout rookie season, but his impact on the Buccaneers’ defense has been just as strong since. The defense has been changing schemes, and more directly his responsibilities from year to year, which has made it difficult for him to really find any continuity. Though the public hasn’t heard much of him, expect the organization to take care of Jackson in the offseason and keep him in Tampa for the next 4-5 years.

OJ Atogwe, STL – Atogwe will become a free agent in the coming weeks, which may or may not take him off the market for next year. It’s probably more likely that he signs a long-term deal in the near future, whether it’s with St. Louis, Dallas, Miami, or anywhere else.

Bernard Pollard, HOU – The complexion of the Texans’ run defense changed dramatically after Pollard became the team’s starting strong safety. If he performs at the same level again, not only will the Chiefs be kicking themselves for releasing him late last offseason, but the Texans will be happy to extend him.

Darren Sharper, NO – After a terrific rebound year, it took a while, but the Saints re-signed Darren Sharper to a 1-year deal. At 35, Sharper is looking toward the end of a career and the Saints seem anxious to try out 1st round pick Malcolm Jenkins at safety. If he has another good year as a pure ballhawk, he’ll get another short-term deal, but most likely outside of New Orleans.

Other than massively overpaying (which Smithiak has never done), why would a top FA want to come to the Texans?

Winning tradition? Nope.

Great coaching? Not here.

Good Tex-Mex? OK, that's a good reason.

Hmm. What a great and clearly thought out point. It must be exactly why no superbowl winning coaches have shown legitimate interest in leading this team either.[/sarcasm]

I might be naive but I think this part absolutely has to change this offseason. If Bob is going to save money by retaining Kubiak he has to hit the FA market with a vengeance. Whats the point in hiring Phillips if you are just going to handcuff him? I expect us to be heavily involved in the big name guys and I expect us to land a couple of them at least as well as a few other lesser talents.

I think we have a shot at Marcus Spears (Dallas/Wade Phillips). Don't know if that would be a good signing or not but worth a shot. He'd be cheap.

Mark Anderson - re-sign this Texan.

DTs/LBs - Don't know who I'd go after.

CB - I really want us to get Champ Bailey. I don't think Joseph/Wright will be leaving their teams.

S - I'd re-sign Pollard. We need to get someone with ballskills though. Hopefully a S from the draft AND FA. Would Landry leave Baltimore for us? He'd compete with Pollard for SS.

OJ Atogwe signed a longterm deal this summer so he's not available.

Antonio Smith is massively overpaid.

I'd like to see Tramon Williams as a Texan. He started in place of Al Harris and showed a lot of promise. Ironically, the Texans signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2006 only to release him before the season started.

Champ Bailey would be another fantastic addition. The only problem with him is that he might be asking too much. He's aging and not the same corner he used to be.

And PLEASE, sign a safety. A good safety with ball-hawking skills. Don't subject us, the Texans fans, to such atrocious safety play for 8 years. PLEASE.

I expected the Texans to land a big FA coach.

Smith makes $7 million a year. Overpaid, yes. But, not close to franchise $$$ (over $12 million for DEs).

The Texans did squat in an uncapped year (2010). I can't see how anyone can expect them to breakout the big checkbook in what is sure to be a capped season (2011).

Champ Bailey is getting old but would be a great pick up. Jonathan Joeseph would be a dream. A realistic guy we could get is Gabe Watson NT from Arizonahttp://www.nfl.com/players/gabewatson/profile?id=WAT365890 for Wade Philips 3-4.

Tramon Williams would own so much. I'd like to have Champ Bailey, but as you mentioned, his asking price might be a bit absurd. Maybe I'm a sucker for the Packers defense, but I'd also like to nab either Cullen Jenkins or Johnny Jolly to anchor our d-line up the middle. If we're going to go 3-4, then either one of these guys is who we need to make an immediate impact.

As far as safties go, I like Quintin Mikell. The Eagles defenders are always aggressive and are typically known for their ball-hawking senses. He's shaping up to be a decent safety. My only concern is he too may be asking for much more than he's worth, and while he's an upgrade for sure, he might be over his head on his asking price. Eric Weddle in San Diego is a guy who is a very solid-to-borderline excellent player who isn't getting as much recognition as some other big name safties such as Darren Sharper, but the dude can be had a very good price and is a guy we shouldn't sleep on if he hits the market. I'd be excited to have him.

Fitz Has one more year i wouldnt mind some how getting him up in here along with TO :kitten: :P

FItz/AJ

with TO and KW on da bench

we would have the best WR core EVER !!

i was glancing over the F/a not alot of big names but prob alot of solid players IMO

Understandable, with such talent as Petey Faggins, Lewis Sanders, Dexter McCleon, and Dexter Wynn on the roster.

Found this interesting about the CBA mess.

10) Q: What is the Final Eight Plan? [during the Final League Year]

A: During the Final League Year, the eight clubs that make the Divisional Playoffs in the previous season have additional restrictions that limit their ability to sign unrestricted free agents from other clubs. In general, the four clubs participating in the championship games are limited in the number of free agents that they may sign; the limit is determined by the number of their own free agents signing with other clubs. They cannot sign any UFAs unless one of theirs is signed by another team. For the four clubs that lost in the Divisional Playoffs, in addition to having the ability to sign free agents based on the number of their own free agents signing with other clubs, they may also sign players based on specific financial parameters. Those four only will be permitted to sign one unrestricted free agent for $5.5 million (estimated) or more in year one of the contract, plus the number of their UFAs who sign with another team. They also can sign any unrestricted free agents for less than $3.7 (estimated) million in year one of the contract with limitations on the per year increases. In the case of all final eight teams, the first year salary of UFAs they sign to replace those lost cannot exceed the first year salary of the player lost with limitations on the per year increases.

Good luck with that. McNair is doing the least he possibly can to affect change and still call it change.

All the more reason to open the checkbook and get some FAs signed now and possibly extend some guys on the team that may soon become FAs. Not only do you need to give Kubiak/Phillips everything possible to succeed... but (don't laugh at me now) we're shooting to win the division next year. That would mean next year we'd lose out on the ability to sign FAs like we could this year. Stock up baby.

Cant wait to hear the playoffs or bust theme

This thread is meaningless

McNair will never pay for the top flight FA's (Bailey)

With Wade Phillips joining the Texans as DC, the big question is will they go to a 3-4. If so, how do they transition if there is a lockout?

I have no doubt that the Texans can switch to a 3-4, but they need some time in the offseason. Look for Pat Williams to come in as NT.

If the Texans go to a 3-4, Amobi won't fit and Earl Mitchell will probably be a backup NT. Barwin would be OLB, Mario a DE and Cush ILB

If the Texans move to a 3-4, Texas A&M's Vonn Miller could be a possibility in the draft. Keep in mind, however that Mike Sherman might not give rave reviews to Gary Kubiak on Miller. Miller a good player but might have some warts.

There are whispers in the Steelers locker room that CB Ike Taylor could be the Houston Texans primary free agent target this offseason.

Hmm. Not too sure about Ike. The Steelers are the team I absolutely hate the most in the NFL, so I can't stomach enough of their games to actually watch Ike perform. On a scale of 1-10, what's the general consensus about him?

If they really do hire Wade Phillips, then I could see them going after Spears or Sensabaugh. They may want to play for Wade, but I would like to see the Texans actively pursue some of them.
