Mortensen: Rumors of Mike Sherman

Brisco_County

Apples and roadmaps
Citing his previous stint as Texans offensive coordinator, being well-liked by Texans owner Bob McNair, and his own past stint as Green Bay head coach, Mort says people shouldn't be surprised if Sherman did end up coaching in Houston.

This would be a total McNair thing to do. Sherman is well within McNair's network and comfort zone, and his stint with the Packers looks better in hindsight after seeing how Favre neutered his last two coaches. I think Sherman is a realistic consideration.

But I also agree with Mortensen's assessment on the matter: McNair needs to start looking outside his network. This is a buyer's market for coaches right now, and it's not the time to be myopic in the evaluation.

The way Sherman seems to finally have things going in the right direction in College Station I am not sure he comes here if offered.

Yes. But if Sherman to Texans and Kubiak to A&M. This may be easier for both side to take. What do you think? Not that I want this to happen but what ifs you know.

Hell no! A&M is finally having some success under Sherman! Leave him be, next year will be great for the Aggies if Sherman stays! The Texans don't need him, they need someone who will turn this franchise upside down.

Hookem, wan't Sherman originally from UT?

Nope. Here is where he has been according to Wiki.

Stamford HS
Worcester Academy
Pittsburgh (GA)
Tulane (OL)
Holy Cross (OL)
Holy Cross (OC)
Texas A&M (OL)
UCLA (OL)
Texas A&M (OL)
Green Bay Packers (TE)
Seattle Seahawks (OC)
Green Bay Packers
Houston Texans (Asst. HC)
Houston Texans (OC)
Texas A&M

Honestly, I could care less where he is from. This guy doesn't excite me in the least bit. This just sounds like another "friend of Bob" hire to me which would produce the same results.

The Texans' needs seem to be a lower priority than what McNair ideally wants. That's why this rumor has some logic to it.

OK thanks. My bad, somehow I thought he was from UT.

No sir, I don't him. He doesn't seem to have a good facepalm.

Dude can't even facepalm correctly...GEEZ!!!

facebackofthehand just. does. not. cut. it.

If it makes anyone happy, McClain says Sherman not likely. Errr nevermind. Just take that fwiw, heh.

Sherman story unlikely

One friend who's usually on top of what's happening in the NFL told me on Monday that Kubiak is out and Mike Sherman is in. I've been hearing Sherman for two weeks. I told him what I tell everyone: No way!

Sherman is a first-class guy who loves being an honorary Aggie. He wouldn't stab Kubiak in the back by talking about his job while he still had it.

Sherman wouldn't be leading Texas A&M to the Cotton Bowl without Kubiak talking him into coming to the Texans and then promoting him for the job at A&M. Forget that one. Sounds like a Longhorn concoction hoping to get Sherman out of College Station.

There was a local report Tuesday that Kubiak is out, and general manager Rick Smith will be put in charge of hiring the new coach.

I also got a call telling me the Tuna is on his way. Bill Parcells said he wants to do it one more time. Nobody knows if that means overseeing an organization and hiring a general manager and coach or just coaching. Either way, scratch the Tuna off your list.

Many irate fans want Bill Cowher or Jon Gruden to replace Kubiak. Some want Jeff Fisher or Tom Coughlin even though both have jobs at the moment with the Titans and Giants.

No where in there did I see a substantial supporting argument to discredit any of those rumors.

On Sherman, it doesn't matter if he hasn't been offered the job yet for the rumor to be true. I doubt McNair has opened dialogue with anyone yet.

And Parcells? YES. That is one rumor I hope is true.

People seem to be interested in McNair hiring a "colorful", even a provocative personality to be the Texans new HC ? Maybe someone like Grueden or Cower instead of the colorless Sherman ? Just don't forget that the most successful HC in the NFL, Bill Belichick, is probably the most boring personality in the NFL.

"People" want a coach that can change the culture of losing. That coach is not Mike Sherman.

If Sherman would come in with his running game, we wouldn't need to worry about a QB having an arm. He would be satisfied having a QB with a pea shooter.:)

"Winning culture" is just too vague for me ? I say what's missing here is somebody(s) who can effectively evaluate defensive talent.

Anything less than Cower imo is settling for second best. I'm afraid he's New York bound though. If Sherman is the pick, or keeping Kubes and bringing in Wade is the alternative, we're stuck on mediocrity. I guess it'll prove the McNair is a cheapskate group to be correct.

:kubepalm:

The only positive Sherman brought with him in 2006 was Vonta Leach.

I also remember names like Samkon Gado and Brad Bedell.

The only positive with Sherman is that he got to the playoffs with another coach's players. Might as well bring in George Seifert for an interview as well.

Look at the Division Winning coaches right now and what "persona" they give off...

Bill Belichick (NE) -
Mike Tomlin (PIT) -
Jim Caldwell (IND) -
Todd Haley (KC) -
Andy Reid (PHI) -
Mike Smith (ATL) -
Lovie Smith (CHI) -
Steve Spagnuolo (STL) -

Yup, fire and brimstone coaches one and all.

Perhaps not, but most a very DEfensive minded. Sherman wouldn't help that.

I wasn't making a case for Sherman and don't want him. I was making a comment on demeanor. But as to most being D oriented:

Bill Belichick (NE) - D
Mike Tomlin (PIT) - D
Jim Caldwell (IND) - O
Todd Haley (KC) - O
Andy Reid (PHI) - O
Mike Smith (ATL) - D
Lovie Smith (CHI) - D
Steve Spagnuolo (STL) - D

The smallest of possible majorities. Is this a new criteria, since the D sucks so bad we have to have a D oriented HC? Guess that marks Gruden off the list which is fine with me.

Tech, wasn't Caldwell was a QB coach and never a Cord?..However, its all invalid because the real coach is 18...

Mike Sherman isn't about to leave A&M.

He has made progress there and wouldn't dump them just to return to the Texans.

I'm of the opinion that Sherman was only using the Texans gig in order to parlay it into a coaching job elsewhere. It's what you do when you get fired as a HC in the NFL: You serve a one-year or two-year stint as a coordinator somewhere and then job hunt for HC positions.

He's got his HC job right now. He won't run out on them just yet. If things revert back to suckyville for A&M in the next two seasons, then I'll buy any rumor placing Sherman as a HC candidate elsewhere. But not today.

This could, theoritically, just be a smokescreen sent out by the Texans to give off the appearance that there's actually several candidates they're looking at when indeed there's only one primary guy they want.

Remember: Image first. They don't want to be perceived as having replaced Kubiak two weeks prior to the end of the season.

Season ticket holder for both the Aggies and the Texans here...

I think all the talk about Sherman to the Texans is just idle chit-chat because he's a somewhat obvious choice as far as NFL background and connections to the Texans. I really don't see it happening. To me, Mike Sherman has the look and sound of a man who is currently completely satisfied with what he's doing and with what he's building in Aggieland. I think Mike's goal in going to A&M was to rebuild the program, and I would be very surprised to see him leave before he feels like he's accomplished what he set out to do.

I thought you were serious (which I was about to agree) however not sure if you were being sarcastic after reading some responses.

What none of those guys are is Mr Nice Guy Marshmallow types.

From Mortensen's chat this morning

Austin (San Antonio)
How much stock should I put into Mike Sherman being the next Head Coach of the Texans? Thanks

He's a name on their list IF they fire Kubiak. That's all I know. I don't know that he would even be interested or if he is the guy the Texans would want if they make a move. We don't have any absolute yet on Kubiak being fired.

Schefter agrees with McClain that Gibbs, Bush to be fired, Smith, Kubiak to be back.

I never even mentioned the Super Bowl.

My bad. Misread.

It was sarcasm but by all reports not on a MB neither is Kubiak. Fans are so absorbed in sideline demeanor they let it blind them to the possibility locker room is different. The reports have been he is much more aggressive in the locker room. For example we had a thread here about how Sage went to Kubiak and asked him to ease up. But back to the main point, fiery sideline coaches at least currently are not dominating the playoffs.

Well the real thing is the lynch mob mentality is in - we hate Kubiak so let's go as anti-Kubiak as possible. Let's get a defensive guy, lets get someone who kicks dirt on the sideline, let's get someone who isn't a first time HC, let's find the only HC in the league who won't use a menu, let's get someone with a mustache, yada yada. Add them all up and you have eliminated 90% of the pool that should be considered. Some folks just need to go listen to Dee Snyder's "We're not going to take it" a few times and relax.

And you wouldn't. McClain seems to take an almost devilish delight in telling people that what they would like to see happen "Won't Happen!" I think it's because he likes pissing people off and because he likes pretending that he's got some kind of inside channel to the inner workings of the NFL and the Texans. The truth is that in every single scenario all but one outcome (whatever eventually happens) will not happen so it's a safe bet for McClain to deny that anything and everything will happen. Then when something does happen he simply acts like he broke the news first and knew it would happen all along.

His alternate move is to have one blog post where he says "I never saw that coming!" and then bury it under a bunch of other **** posts and stories that come off like he knew what would happen all along. Even when he admits that he doesn't know everything he eventually finds a way to act like he knows everything.

Not to get off-topic but regarding McClain. Anyone listen to him this morning? Heh I imagine not but a few things he had to say:

Rumors all over.

Friend of mine said Sherman a done deal. I said no way. Sherman a class act. Wont ever talk about Kubiak and his job as long as Kubiak has it. They're close friends.

Other said Parcells. Not happening.

I'll be surprised if he is fired. Dont believe both Rick and Gary will be fired.
If I had to bet, I wouldnt bet the house.

What I do is write different versions if something is imminent. I'll have one that says Gary is back, one that says Gary is gone and then have it posted immediately. You have to be careful. You want to get it up and out there first. I'm gonna have it both ways.

Last game has no bearing.

We'll have a draft in April. No player movement

If Gary fired, Rick would be GM and conduct search. Rick would recommend to Bob who to hire.

Only coach who wants control is Cowher. Everyone else had a GM.

Cowher would want house cleaned.

Whatever you do, gotta do it fast. Move quick.

Wildcard is Harbaugh though not a candidate here.

McNair a patient guy. He can find silver lining in anything. People close to him said he would not fire Kubiak.

Put a gun to my head, he's staying.

McNair knows. He'll wait until after season.

If he(Bob) thinks we're close, why would he change the HC?

Cant justify 5-11

I think he wont fire him.

I thought after that game he wouldnt keep Kubiak

McNair doesnt care about what people think nationally

Texans dont get same respect from refs because they suck.

Need to spend more money this offseason.
