All right (Insert your HC Choice's name here) is hired now what does he do?

OK, not many positive things to talk about here in Texansland with the exception of a possible coaching shake up. As great as it sounds to change coaches it's not going to be all champagne and velvet ropes in year one, with Coaching changes come roster and style changes and that takes time to get implemented.

With all this fun stuff in mind I post this thread to get everyones thoughts on the coach they want and more importantly what will we see in 2011 if your guy is hired. Tell us who your guys is and what major changes will take place withing reason. I'll start it off.

New HC: Bill Cowher (Mainly because he brings instant respectability to a team that needs some desprately)

Record: 9-7

Overall: Team evolves into a tougher team (Duh), bigger stronger and hopefully better. Cowher gives this team confidence. The Offense is allready strong, some because of the roster some because of the scheme. The Defense has some major holes, but has some real talent as well, so a coaching change could theoretically make this side of the ball better by default. The one major problem will be changes, the Roster is a little lite for Cowher, can he move folks around and make it work early on?

Offense: Power Scheme eventually, but use of some of the high power aspects of the Offense during the transition. Perhaps Dennison stays on for a couple of years to help out with the Denver style since the roster is built this way.

QB: Schaub stays, he's solid and can help out with the Denver Style of Offense. If Dennison stay Schaub will be the assistant OC, and will be allowed to call more audibles, he knows the scheme and needs a longer leash. His heir apparent is drafting in 2-3 years to give the team some options.

RB: Although Kubiaks regime drafted "One Cut Runners", Foster stays because it appears he can play in any scheme. Also Ward fits nicely, and Tate should fit in well also.

FB: Do I need to even comment.

WR: #80, #83, fit the scheme well, who knows with #12. Dickerson should fit in well with his size if he gets past his rawness. The rest will probably stay with the exception of Davis.

TE: I would trade OD for what I could get, maybe a 3rd Rounder (Maybe), Dressen takes over as the better blocker, if Casey can get batter a blocking he stays as well.

OL: Cowher tell the entire OL to head top Denny's and not to come back to camp until they gain 25 lbs. All kidding aside it really depends how fast Cowher wants to make the change. Perhaps some of the Tackles could move to OG, and Caldwell takes over snapping, and they pursue some OT's in FA, or the Draft. Perhaps Butler moves to OG.

Defense: Switch to a 3-4 Defense

DL: Most of the small DT get cut or traded. Mario and Antonio, and we seem to have come across some good mid level DE's during mid season pick ups. We Draft a Planetoid DT, and make some FA pick ups of bigger guys.

LB: Cush moves outside naturally, and perhaps Barwin makes the switch, poor guy can't stay in one place! If Demeco gets healthy he stays inside. Sharpton moves inside with #59. Diles and Bentley back up the MLB's. We draft OLB, and make some FA moves.

CB: Jason Allen is the #1 or #2 depending on what we can find in FA. We heavily pursue a solid #1 CB in FA. KJ and GQ figh for the nickle spot.

S: Pollard stays as the SS, we go to a regular SS? FS situation as oppossed to our twin Safetys approach. We draft a top tier FS and this makes up some for Pollards coverage skills.

ST: Afters Racker performance last week he stays for sure, and new players transition to the coverage units.

Notable changes:

Steve Slaton-Cut
Andre Davis-Cut
Okoye-Traded (For what who knows)
Graham-Cut
Wilson-Cut

Misc./Wildcard:
Perhaps Kubiak will want some players from the squad when he lands in Denver in two weeks, perhaps he works with Rick and Houson North sends some of Denvers remanining draft picks for some of the guys we don't want. Perhaps we trade some guys straight up, like the DL, OL, and LB's for some of the same.

Whoever the coach is needs to walk in, put a blank piece of paper on the wall and tell the players that it's the 2011 depth chart. Everything has to be earned.

Coach: Jon Gruden

Record: 11-5 (Playoff bound)

Offense: Breaks numerous records, Schaub passes for 5,000 yards, Arian Foster leads league in rushing yards and TDs for a second season in a row, and AJ has 1,500+ yards receiving and leads league in TDs.

Defense: Renewed swagger reminiscent of the "House of Pain" days.

I like how you think. Interested in a HC position?:bravo:

We have to do what the Bears did last season, sign big name free agents specially on the defensive side of the ball. I don't think fans will tolerate another season of players of the street and washed up veterans.

Really? AJ, Leach, Foster haven't earned a spot?

It's not really a question of who has earned a spot, but who will earn a spot on the 2011 team. It's all about setting the tone and attitude going forward. And are we really concerned with those three excelling?

JB - He's an old curmudgeon, not unlike Bum.
Thorn - see JB and add that he's not afraid to tell people to kiss his A$$!
CAK - he's intelligent and all lawyerly!

And last,

Corrosion - he'll punch someone in the back of their mellon head! (or wait, was that me?)

First, Andre Davis isn't on the Texans Roster right now, so how could Cowher cut him.

Second, it is incorrect to assume that Cowher would switch to a 3-4 Defense just because that is what the Steelers used while he was there. Dick LeBeau was already in place when Cowher was hired and he wanted to switch to a 4-3 defense but was overuled.

He isn't on the active roster but he is on the injured reserve roster.

Never heard that about Cowher wanting to go 4-3. Any place you could point me to for background?

You know what, I think I misremembered. It was Mike Tomlin that wanted to run the 4-3 not Cowher. Sorry about that.

Maybe not, but if we draft smart and sign some good FAs we can...

I'd take Jonathan Joseph (Who's said he wouldn't mind being Franchised by the Bengals and wants to play there next year, but hey, we're dreaming) and Champ Bailey (Could always be a FS)...

That would be a start. Bob McNair needs to get after it during the FA (could be the wrong timing due to contract disputes). This team has never ried to go after guys, who cost more but can play ball. We always seem to target mediocre talent and take risks on players well past there prime.

I'm very interested in bringing Bailey in. Bailey, Quin and Jackson look to be a pretty quality trio if you ask me. Still need safety help. I want us to be more aggressive on defense so Pollard at SS if fine with me but we HAVE to get another S back there that can cover.

I think Phillips coming in as DC has merit to it. I believe Marcus Spears is a FA this offseason too. Does anyone know if he'd be a decent pickup for a DE/OLB guy? Coaches often bring guys they're familiar with. Just throwing things out there.

With the 3-4 the key is having a mammoth NT. All the elite 3-4s have a super stud NT.

Ravens - Haloti Ngata
Steelers - Casey Hampton
Patriots - Vince Wilfork

Its vital but not necessary. It just depends, the Cowboys use Jay Ratliff and he's only 300-Lbs. IMO, what's important is the team work between rushing OLBs and d-linemen. The Bills have Kyle Williams who is similar to Ratliff and he's having an outstanding season.

All also have playmaking safeties, something else that a good 3-4 needs.

Meaning Pollard and Wilson would probably be gone as well.

I think our FS is already on the roster. His name is Glover Quin. I think he can be an average cornerback but I think his cover skills will make him an outstanding FS.

Next years secondary:

CB1: Champ Bailey/Jonathon Joseph
CB2: Jason Allen
Nickel: KJ
FS: GQ
SS: Pollard

Billick, He hire Marvin Lewis to fix the defense and in 2 yrs the Texans are playoff bound.

He's a cheaper alyernative to Cowher and that should appeal to McNair.

why do you think that Billick has not been hired since his Raven's days? I don't think he has even been considered for a OC position.

No you don't get it. Recognizable names is all that counts. It's brilliant. Pair an offensive minded coach who never could build a good O as HC and and defensive coach who never could build a good D as HC and championship.

 JB! Dammit! I will try to get it right next time! I keep thinking of stuff like, if he is a good coach, why is he out of a job?

Common sense is not very common around here though.

What are the systems being used by today's 3-4s, and how do they work?

There are three systems being run out of the 3-4s.

The Fairbanks-Bullough (we'll call it the Bullough).
The Phillips
The Lebeau Zone-Blitz

The Bullough

This system is what most people think of when they think of the 3-4. It is based on 2-gap play on the D-line.

The "Phillips"

This system is not what people think of when they think of the 3-4, because the original 3-4 was/is strictly a 2-gap system.

Phillips was an innovator who turned the 3-4 upside down. His system is one-gap. The DL penetrates, and is charged with constant harrasment of the QB. The LBs are typically fast, and at least one of them will blitz on any given play.

The Lebeau zone blitz

Attack, Attack, Attack.

The Zone Blitz is a very nasty thing to deal with. In terms of player types, one can vary the NT type and even the DEs, but 1 gap speed DEs are much more common.

Link

Read the link and you will see that not all 3-4s are the same nor due they use the same type of personnel.

Pollard needs to be out of the rotation. For every hard hit he makes, he's giving up a TD. He needs to become captain special teams. Get a young guy in here with some speed back there.

I'd like Pollard if we move to be a more aggressive defense, having him play closer to the line more and blitz. We'd be able to do that because we have a true safety back there that has ball skills. Who that guy will be, I don't know but without him... I concur with you - Pollard gives up TDs due to poor coverage.

I also keep forgetting we have Jason Allen at CB. Bailey, Allen, Quin, Jackson.
