Kubiak press conference..

I resign as Head Coach of the Houston Texans effective immediately..I apologize to all the fans that i have let down, the city of houston, Mr. Mcnair, and my team. Please, hire a competent coaching staff to replace me.

Gary Kubiak

Man can dream, right?

Listened to a bit driving back from lunch.

He sounds like a guy that wants to get fired.

Being a guy that wants to get fired, I can sympathize

I liked the way Barry Warner is asking about leadership and at least not lobbing softballs out to him. Kubes replies sound as scripted as the first 15 plays no matter what the question though, these pressers are almost useless to hold at this point.

Just caught the end of it. Kubiak look upset when walking away from the podium to anyone else?

From watching it, he almost had a grin of "who cares right now, nothing works." I think the dude is just waiting it out.

I feel bad for Gary he certainly lost in the video.

I always feel bad for an Aggie who is down. But dadgummit Gary Kubiak did this to himself. He brought in his people, his players, he coached them, he let them fail repeatedly without repercussions. I think he is a good and admirable man, but he sucked as head coach of the Houston Texans...

Barry Warner is trying to get him a little stirred up. Kubes politely disagrees. LOL

Warner always tries to ask a question or two with attitude. Really no need this week as Kubiak is pretty easy target to beat up on.

He had to know the team opened a big can of quit yesterday, and he still doesn't throw his players under the bus. He's a good guy, but the fact remains that he isn't head coaching material. Bob should do the right thing and go ahead and let Gary resign today.

Right, but no matter who you bring in you just do not count on failing this much.

Why would Gary resign? He's got McNair on the hook, he just signed a extension last offseason. McNair is going to have to fire Kubiak if he wants to get rid of him.

Did you see any of the press conference? Kubiak looked beat down and exhausted. Maybe its just the idea of Cowher coming but he didnt look or sound good at all.

By that I mean McNair give Gary the option to resign and still pay him out, since Bob likes things to be classy, but you're right though, Bob will probably have to fire him.

Kubiak presser:

You hoped to make the playoffs. How bad do you feel?

DIsappointing. Had good team coming out of TC. Knew about tough schedule, Missed key players early but we weathered that. Very tough since 4-2 start. Still got a lot to play for.

What do you play for?

Same thing you play for every week. Pride. You got a job in the NFL. Should not change how we do our job.

Worried now about your job?

Answer it the same as I have before. (Not worried about my job)

What about Bob?

Like I told you's, Bob can say what he wants but he wants us to win games.

[Missed question]

Never with Bob by myself. Always Cal, Rick, Bob and myself. We review the team and where its at.

What did you think of Smith where he mentioned D didnt have each others back. Is that the case? Is that an issue?

Thats guys in the heat of the battle. If you look at the play, you'd see why he is mad. He is upset. One teammate trying to keep him calm. Antonio very emotional young man. Doesnt surprise me.

He said a guy doesnt have his back?

I cant answer questions for him. Hes a great teammate. He'd have to answer.

Given first half struggles, what is different preparing wise?

Game plan wise, same thing for 5 years now. Couple years ago, great first Q team and bad 3rd Q team. Always searching for perfection in this buisness. Not one area. All areas. When you give up 3 TDs, you wont play well as a team. Team didnt play well. We've been outscored 3:1 in football games so you'll be down for whatever reason. We're searching. We'll keep searching.

When your down, how does it change?

Throws your gameplan out the window real fast. You get down 21, your in hurry up mode and one personnel(whatever that personnel is).

With injuries Schaub has had, do you plan to start Dan or Matt?

No, if Matt can go he'll go. He is beat up but he'll go.

Would you like to evaluate other guys in some fashion?

Id like to but we got a game to win. If he's(Matt) available he'll play.

Arian forced out with back spasms?

No, ankle. Know nothing about the back spasms.

Code about not angling for another job?

What are you talking about?

Bill Cowher said he likes the Texans.

Hes a damn good coach. Dont know what your asking me.

Isnt there a code?

I dont know. I have no idea.

Looks like Matt is drifting this year. Whats going on there?

I would drift too. Protection not good enough yesterday.

Ive seen more enthusiasm at a funeral, where is the leadership? These guys are saying 57 more minutes and we're out of here.

I dont feel that. Games have started a lot like yesterday. A feeling of "Oh no, not again". I would disagree.

4th and 8th first series, how does Wilson get lost?

We pressured them. They had max protect. He gotta cover better but we gotta get better pressure.

What did you do different?

Didnt work so doesnt matter.

Do you get the "Oh no, not again" feeling?

I dont want to but you better do something when down 21-0. For me, I gotta find out how to get some snaps. We had a chance to get back in it but...ongoing thing. We're battling through it.

How do you view the D now?

We moved Frank down, are playing a lot of guys. D line has some new faces. Bottom line gotta play better.

Darryl suited better at the MLB? Not sure where he is suited best for but he is one of the best we got so he got to be out there.

Rest of ST, is there anyway to approach it?

No. Did not punt well. Covering hurt us. Penalties too. We're playing some starters there. It has been tough on Joe. Revolving door of who is available but part of the game.

5-7 last 3 years. Anything different?

No. I told them today, if I had a question about that, I'll tell them. We had guys playing hard and doing good things but sloppy in the first that it couldnt be overcome. Offensively up front, didnt play well.

Playing slow, is that giving best effort?

We looked slow and tired. They werent trying to go slow.

He already has a job waiting for him as an offensive coordinator with some team, just like Capers had a defensive job lined up for him.

They are not going screw that up by throwing players under the bus, or making some headline by being baited by some dipshit local reporter.

Just maintain your poise, stay classy, and play out the string.

Was this really asked??

Jerome Solomon asked it.

That was really classless. Considering Cowher has stated many times he won't even talk about future possibilities until the season is over, what Solomon asked was irresponsible. Code, really? Stupid, guy should be fired. I can understand wanting to ask tough questions, but the guy crossed the line with those questions.

I agree. I never liked Solomon to begin with, and to ask that question was unprofessional. It's also a report 'from a source' and not even from Cowher himself. Maybe Cowher did say it to someone, but my guess is that he never meant for that to get out if it was the case, and it's silly to ask that question when Cowher didn't break any 'code' since it didn't come from his mouth directly to a reporter.

This is typically a 1 RB allignment.

This tells me everything I need to know. A coach whose job is safe will not say he would like to evaluate guys but can't because he has to win now.

I didn't watch the video, so wtf is Solomon (sp?) saying here? I get he's trying to talk about the Cowher rumors, but reading it sounds like he's drunk off his ass and thinks he's making perfect sense (I've done that several times in my life to know).

Now that the excitement of someone finally asking tough questions has worn off I agree bwith you. Guy already looked beaten down during the conference and I almost feel bad for him. Still want him gone though....

Here is some more:

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/fb/texansfront/7347829.html

Kubiak declined to comment on speculation that he’s going to be fired but said he hasn’t changed his feelings in that he’s more worried about his assistant coaches and players.

Starting three weeks ago, there were reports that former Steelers coach Bill Cowher has the Texans on his list of potential teams he’d like to coach. Cowher hasn’t confirmed or denied it publicly.

“I don’t know anything about that,” Kubiak said.

Linebacker Brian Cushing was asked if he thought Cowher could help the defense.

“Gary Kubiak and (defensive coordinator) Frank Bush are my coaches, and they’re the only ones I listen to,” Cushing said.

Gary should have said, look here you jacknut there is not any stinking code. You talk out of your butthole sometimes.

That was as tasteless a "Jock Shock" interview tactic as I've ever experienced. Kubiak's response diffused his sorry ass.

Exactly. Garys not doing his job, but he's still gonna get a multi-year, multi-million dollar payday anyway if McNair cans him, so why would Kubiak voluntarily walk away from all of that ? And already you've got to know Kubiaks got millions and millions in liquid assets stashed away, so I don't really feel too sorry for him. Not like I feel for a lot of people (including me), who've been let go in the past with maybe a couple weeks pay comin (if that), nothin in the bank, and no idea where I'd be working next ? I can only dream about having Kubiaks problems.
But you know what, I'm still not convinced that Kubiak loses his job even if he finishes 5-11 ?

Yep, when I read the questions, thought the same thing. I can see why the Texans normally don't give the Houston media info.

While seemingly classless by Solomon, this is nothing compared to the weekly grilling that coaches in New York or Philly have to hear. Kubiak would probably just skip to the chase and go into a fetal position in some of the tougher media markets.

This is local media trying to run a man out of town.

True.

I won't defend Solomon, but Houston media has been more than fair after five years.

Well Kubiak didn't lie about not knowing about back spasms with Foster.

NFL .com is reporting spasms in the glute

(kinda sarcasm because Kubiak could have said that it wasn't back, but glute)

Sorry guys, but the media here has been more than genteel with Kubiak during his time here. Those questions were tough, and FAIR.

I just saw Jerome Soloman's question on tv, and thought his original question was fair. I thought his follow-up "code" question was a bit of a cheap shot and unnecessary, but oh well.

Kubiak has earned his very, very hot seat.

And he is angry you can tell as he should be.

I see nothing wrong with the questioning. If he were in any number of other markets, it could be far worse (I'll admit....I've typically been a Kubiak supporter, FYI).

He's probably not going to be fired, and will be forced to replace the defensive staff.

Having said that, if Cowher wants to come in, I'm all for it. Otherwise, I'd honestly let him go one more year on a REALLY tight leash. You gotta consider what's available out there and changes could upend your entire system. I think Cowher is more than smart enough to look at what's positive and not rebuild for the sake of rebuilding. This situation is FAR from what Kubes took over, IMO. With even a decent defense, our offense would arguably be even more effective. It's really difficult to be required to score 28+ points to win every game.

Not to re-hash the "Fire Kubiak" debate too much, but a question: What's considered a "tight leash" going into next year? He was on a tight leash this year. If we give him one more year, on a "tight leash", will we fire him in the middle of the season if we tank again?

At this point, this isn't about personel and scheme. This is about flat-out leadership. The guy is a really, really poor leader.

Bob Allen asked him if he was worried about his job status. Kubiak responded that he wasn't, that he was more worried about the people he hired, and how a change would affect their careers.

But here's the thing: He has enabled his people so much, that many of their careers are likely ruined. What do you think the odds of Frank Bush ever becoming a defensive coordator again are? He'll get a job as a line coach somewhere, and that's about it.

Leaders let people do their jobs, but they don't enable bad behavior. They are fair, but they also hold people responsible. That's the real issue here.
