Which of these guys do you think we will re-sign? Who are we letting go?

Maybe someone can help me with this because I'm not completely sure about how contracts are handled. I know that the current CBA allows for some players to be tendered...I think Jacoby and Studdard fall under that category...

I'm not sure about the others...With the looming CBA talks, it may be a moot point though...

The guys I definitely want to bring back are Foster and Leach. I don't know about the rest.

Not sure about the details, but I feel that Kevin Bentley, Kasey Studdard and Jacoby Jones will be let go. The rest should be retained. Vonta Leach, Shaun Cody, Zach Diles, Arian Foster, Tim Jamison.

If there's a new regime, only Foster and Leach will be back. New coaches always bring in their former players to serve as depth.

I think Bentley has done a decent job since going into the starting line-up. If we can get him for a reasonable price I wouldn't mind keeping him around.

There is a lot of uncertainty heading into the off-season. We don't know if Kubiak will be back..We dont' know what the CBA will entail...We don't know who we will be drafting...what FA's will be available..

Zach Diles has lost his starting job...Bentley has played pretty well in the middle as a starter...Two key defensive players coming off injuries....Will Zach want to come back? Will some team offer Bentley good money to come in and be a starter?

This is going to be a very interesting off-season...

I think whether or not Kubiak is retained, this team will have some major changes though....

I would be quite upset if the Texans did not attempt to upgrade Shaun Cody and Zac Diles. I'd be fine with letting Vonta Leach and Jacoby Jones hit the market.

Really?

Dude is a stud...
No doubt he is. I love me some Vonta Leach.

I say this because I believe we are going to have to pony up again to keep him. Especially if he makes the Pro Bowl. We're going to need the cap room if we're going to make a genuine attempt at revamping this team. A team with this type of offense generally should not sink themselves too deep into the FB position.

Vonta Leach isn't an Andre Johnson or a Matt Schaub. He's replaceable.

Cody has had a solid year - if not for him this defense is much worse than it already is.

No way Im letting Leach hit the market. He's what makes that running game go.

I'd like to see Bentley stay as well , he can play all the LB spots and is pretty solid on ST.

JJ and Diles have underperformed at least to my expectations. I'd let them test the waters.

I believe Foster is tendered .... he will be back. They could work out a multi year deal for him but either way he's a Texan next season.

I hear what you are saying...

And I do think it's a possibility that someone will throw some good money his way. Definitely gonna be interesting to watch.

But with that said, I just can't see the Texans letting him walk...Dude has been a very valuable piece in our running game...He truly is the hammer...

If you're content with the performance of anyone not named Mario on that defensive line... I don't know what to say.

As for Leach being the cog that makes this runnong game go... where was our run game last year? How many times have we seen the Texans line up with a single back this year? A lot. And with much success. That's all Arian Foster.

Again, I am a fan of Vonta Leach. I am not trying to discredit Leach but it seems like much of his accolades are... overstated. Simply put, I'd like to keep him, I just don't know if we can afford him considering all of our other holes.

Shaun Cody has been a pleasent surprise. Bentley provides veteran leadership. Would like to see Leach retire a Texan. Need to talk extension with Foster. We'll know more about Jamison with Mario on IR. the rest resign for hometown discount or release.

How could u let leach hit the market... he is one ofthe best blocking fullbacks in football a0nd a big reason for AF's success think about what
happened to Eddie george after they let lorenzo(?) neal go .... he went from one ofe the leading rushers in the NFL to one of the worst in less than a season...no way do we let leach go... it will kill our run game end of story not to mention dude can catch some

Antonio Smith. I don't know how you're not content with his play. Mark Anderson for that matter, has come in and done what we asked him to. Now if you want to talk abot the DT's, I'm listening.

Always picking up after my little brother.

To your point though. Adrian Murell(yeah, even he hit 1000 yards running behind Neal), Dunn, George, Dillon and LT.

Oh, and for 10 years consecutively he was in front of a 1,000 yard rusher.

Meh... fullbacks are expendible.

Vonta and Foster are obvious bring backs (we will have to pay both of them though).

Don't mind seeing Cody and Diles back, as long the price is right! Wouldn't reach to sign these guys to a deal.

Not happy with the play of Antonio Smith at all! 100 million we signed him and how many sacks/pressures vs offside calls? He hasn't been earning his money. FYI, Antonio Smith plays a lot of DT for us. He was supposed to compliment Mario in a big way by drawing bodies off him. Fail.

Mark Anderson has been real nice. Too bad it was a late season addition.

The only guy on the DL I think that has played under expectations is 0k0ye.

Then again , the scheme calls for him to penetrate rather than push the pocket. Thats not helping this young secondary one bit. The fact that 0k0ye disappears for long stretches and doesnt get any push from the middle allows the opposing QB's to step up comfortably in the pocket on a regular basis while the DE's get washed behind the play.

They need a big nasty 3/4 NT type in that spot rather than 0k0ye or Mitchell who are very similar players.

Ive defended 0k0ye in the past but its becoming apparent to me that he's never going to grow into that player many expected. He's a rotation guy , nothing more.

I think Smith has been a good signing , the fact that MW has been hurt all year might have something to do with their lack of production.

Yeah he's made some boneheaded mistakes .... but he has produced as well.

And yeah , Anderson has been pretty good since coming here.

I just hope Barwin and Demeco can come back and pay at a high level after those horrible injuries. Im thinking you almost have to plan for Demeco not coming back .... and hope like hell he does.

The pass rush went to **** after Barwin went down. He allowed them to do a lot of things that they just cant do now.

I know Diles hasn't been inactive but is he fighting some lingering injury? Sharpton has been getting the lion's share of playing time in front of him and he is looking pretty solid, especially for a rook. Unless he is cheap I think Diles is gone.

JJ can't get out of here quick enough as far as i'm concerned, just waaaay too inconsistent.

Cody is serviceable, I wouldn't lose sleep either way.

Leach must be brought back.

Bentley deserves to come back if he can't find a starting job elsewhere. Good depth and ST.

Studdard is replaceable but would be very cheap I imagine. New coaching staff would almost surely let him walk.

Foster will be back, just a question of at what price. I hope he gets rewarded nicely.

Why no mention of Owen Daniels? Does he have another year of RFA? If not I think he has to be back. One year deal if it needs to be and let him re-establish his value. I really believe he is a key to making this offense go.

You must be confusing Antonio's contract with Haynesworth or something. 100 mil? Smith is an absolute warrior out there too, he has earned every penny.

HOU-TEX

Ah, Football!
Leach and Foster, the rest, meh.

Leach will not be going anywhere, no matter who the HC is. It'd be a monumental mistake, IMO

Hervoyel

BUENO!
Leach and Foster you must re-sign. Beyond those two there's not a name in there you can't replace with equal or greater ability in free agency almost any year. Bentley has done a good job filling in for Ryans so I think you try and get him back if you can but definitely don't go breaking the bank to hold on to him. Cody and Diles get backup money if anything. Jacoby Jones I wouldn't even bother attempting to bring back. He's like Corey Bradford only faster and even less likely to catch the ball (and I didn't think that was possible).

Yup. Our defensive line sends shudders around the league. Not.

I also don't buy the arguments that it all falls on Okoye because he's had a decent game here and there. Shaun Cody should be rotated upon but our starter? No! In fact, Antonio Smith has been worth Shaun Cody money. Not the 100 million.

C'mon now... this defensive line sucks as a unit. They do not routinely bat passes down at the LOS, sack the QB, get tackles for a loss, cause fumbles, recover fumbles, or even cause interceptions. We are much further than a simple Okoye or Barwin from being a viable line.

Bear in mind 2011 is a contract year for Mario Williams. That could factor in heavily in our offseason this year as well.

You keep saying 100 million. He was signed for 5 years, 35 million.

Zach Diles has lost his starting job
I was really surprised to see Darryl Sharpton starting in Zacs spot at WIL Monday night ? No injury issues here, Sharpton has flat beat him out of the starting job ?

It happened a couple of weeks ago if I'm not mistaken...

I think Zach got injured and Sharpton had to spell him...Well, Sharpton did so well according to Kubiak, that he remained the starter...

I believe it's his spot to lose now.

To be honest, Arian is the only one that's irreplaceable. I'd love to have Vonta back, but you have to be frugal. If he's asking for a lot, then we might be better off without him.

So for me, it's Arian and Vonta.

Maybe either Diles or Bentley.

I want to keep Cody, but in a rotational role, not necessarily as a starter. JJ is gone. Diles is a good special team guy and back up but thats it.

You have to wonder who wants to stay in Houston. 9 years and counting with no playoffs.
That's the thing...

Everyone will not be Andre Johnson...

I would think that some of these guys would leave whether we wanted them back or not...

Money talks, but in the NFL, so do wins...

Think I'm done with Jacoby. When is he going to focus and develop into a superstar, as we've all been expecting? Seems like it's always, "Jacoby is almost there, Jacoby is almost there..."

Can't Jacoby be tendered to a reasonable contract?
Depends on the CBA. If we were talking the CBA from 2 years ago, he'd be able to go get himself a new deal if he wanted, unless we franchised him (stupid move). Now? He won't hit the market unless we absolutely do not want him back.

Vonta Leach-keep if you can keep the contract reasonable.
Kevin Bentley-meh
Shaun Cody-g'bye
Jacoby Jones-not that I really want to keep it just kinda makes me weary of Kubiak's WR drafting record, which would certainly come into play if JJ is let go.
Kasey Studdard-c-c-c-c-cut
Zach Diles-meh
Arian Foster-bigtime
Tim Jamison-PS? Between Mario/Smith/Anderson and Barwin coming back....not a lot of room

Keep

1. Foster/ all pro
2.Leach /only if resigning him doesn't keep the Texans from upgrading the defense in FA.
3. Cody/great depth at DT. Should never play more than 25/30 plays a game.
4.Bentley/Best ST guy on the team. IMHO

You don't need fancy stats as a FB. FBs aren't expected to have 80 catches for 1000 yards. Their primary role is to be the lead blocker and pave the way for the RB. Considering Arian Foster's (and even Derrick Ward's) recent success, I would say Leach is doing a pretty darn good job. He's a punishing blocker. I wouldn't want to get in his way.

So are you suggesting we cut everybody?

As I mentioned earlier, Leach deserves a new contract. He's done his job, and he's done it well. And also, how many passes has he dropped this season? I can't think of any.

If we can sign Kevin Bentley to an affordable contract, why not? He's been a stellar special teams player and is good depth. I'm not saying he's starter material, but he's what you need in a dominant ST player.

As for Shaun Cody, I agree with you. He hasn't lived up to his contract and contributes to our defensive-line woes. However, being on an 0-16 team doesn't define you as a player. It's a team game. I don't know about you, but I'd sign Calvin Johnson in a heartbeat!

Kasey Studdard, Zac Diles and Tim Jamison have played at a level well enough to be CUT. Zac Diles? Ha ha, he's absolutely terrible in pass coverage. He's our 2010 version of Morlon Greenwood without the 100+ tackles. There's a reason why Sharpton is now starting in front of him...
