Special Teams | Morency to Return Kicks

Phil Kessel: Nice Guy. Tries Hard.
i read on the sight that mathis might miss the game because of his hammy. I really hope he can play. He can be a game-breaker. I just wanna hear what you all say.

Mathis is questionable (50/50) for the game. Morency, who hasn't returned a single kickoff in the preseason and totaled a whopping 10 returns for a 22.5 yard average in his college career is our new returner. Suddenly cutting Swinton & Kasper looks kind of questionable. Here's a whole article from the official site

Morency is incredibly talented. He is explosive and cuts on a dime...I'm not worried about him.

I'm guessing there are significant differences in kick returns and punt returns. Personally it seems like if you could do punt returns then kick returns would be much easier, but I've never done either before so I don't really know. Should we expect Buchanon to return punts still? Or will Morency handle both?

We just need to get him some better cleats. I swear ive never seen anyone fall down that much.

I dunno.....I don't like it. Swinton seemed steady and definitely experienced
like JJ from past years, but much more talented than JJ. I mean you run it
back 100 yards - that's a helluva upgrade right there over what we've ever
had here. I thought they were getting a little cute with the roster by cutting Swinton. I have zippo confidance in Hollings and Mathis is talented, but he's
being slowed by injuries right out of the gate. And I like Morency to, but that's another rookie taking on a role that's not in his college resume.
The idea of last minute juggling for the seasons opener, I don't like it.

Don't get me started on this whole subject (Swinton got s c r e w e d).

This is usually the part of my post where I go into a 1,000-word rant about how stupid it was to cut Swinton. I guess Arizona is laughing out loud right now. I am.

I would rather Buchanon not be a returner. He is going to be one of our starting corners and I dont want him to get injured on some return. I want him out there running hard on every defensive play, and not worrying about Special teams. M&M (My new nick name for Mathis and Morency) can take care of that.

I agree 100%.

Hes mostly a punt return specialist but I would rather he didnt for injury prevention.

Tony Hollings is our other kickoff returner. So that's why we kept him

I was thinking the same thing, Hollings has both more speed & experience. the last thing we need to see is a ball popping out on a kick-off after a solid hit, if there is one thing I've noticed about Morency is that he does not always put the ball away and losses control of the football. and if Hollings cannot at least return kick-offs I'm at a general overall loss for why did they keep him :brickwall

Let's start a "Bring JJ Moses Back" petition.

At least he has sure hands: Only lost one ball the whole season. And if I'm thinking correctly, that lost fumble was actually the only ball he even dropped.

BRING BACK MOSES! :texflag:

The only time JJ put the ball on the ground it had nothing to do with handling the kick initially. He safely caught the ball and then lost it when hit during the return,.

Geez... that's all we need is him prissy-footing into the wedge and fumbling on kickoffs. If we call Reggie and apologize do you think he will come back to us?

I would bet he is, and don't discount it. They didn't say Morency would return punts and kick-offs...they said he was returning kicks from Kris Brown. I don't think they mentioned he was shagging punts. It is very common to see running backs return kick offs since you need a bit of a stronger runner there. I would probably guess that Buchanan would return punts and Morency or Hollings on the kick return team.

I thought Moses got picked up by the Bears. Actually, scratch that - I KNOW he got picked up by the Bears. I just don't know if they subsequently released him. I was glad to see him land somewhere though.

I was rather looking forward to Swinton returning kicks this year. I'd rathe rhave Moses back there than Hollings or Mathis. Morency ... meh ... dunno.

FYI to everyone...

Buchannon is the teams primary punt returner and will field punts this Sunday. Mathis, Morency and Hollings are our kick-off guys according to a source. Since Mathis has the hammy problem Morency will take the kick return duties.

Swinton signed with Arizona. Who cut Moses to make room on the roster.

He was cut by the Bears (like Vinny stated), brought in by the Cardinals who cut him when we cut Swinton. Swinton is better than Moses.

I dont understand why they would have a starting CB retuning punts immediatly after playing defense, if he takes a big hit, we will suffer at 2 positions..I would have liked to have seen what D.Morgan could do as PR/KR

Was wondering what they would do if Mathis got hurt.
Where's Reggie!!!!!!! We need him back. 3 Td's(1 by kick-off return) and we let him go! Go figure!

Bobby 119C :brickwall

Mathis is the #1 Kick returner (kick-offs only). Buchannon is the # 1 Punt returner.

Umm...Deion Sanders and Rod Woodson anyone?

Umm..I wouldnt compare Buchanon to those 2 just yet. If PBuc takes a big hit, our secondary is screwed. :brickwall
I think he is talking about his history as a return man. He is tied with George Atkinson, Tim Brown, & Claude Gibson on the Raiders’ all-time list for punts returned for a touchdown (3 in 36 games).

PRO: Fast, playmaking cover corner who can also return kicks…can boast seven touchdown returns (four INT, three punt) in 36 career games…has 11 career picks, averaging 29.6 yards per return…averages 11 yards on 72 career punt returns…acquired by the Texans in a trade with Oakland on 4/20/05 for two 2005 draft picks – a second-rounder (47th overall) and a third-rounder (73rd)…his three career punt returns for scores ties him for first (George Atkinson, Tim Brown, Claude Gibson) on the Raiders’ all-time list…his four career INT returns tie him for second (Dave Grayson, Lester Hayes, Rod Martin) on Oakland’s all-time list…originally drafted by the Raiders in the first round (17th overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft.

i read on the site that matis has improved.
I would just as soon see Mathis sit this one out and be 100% for the Steelers. I don't think Buffalo will get to kickoff that many times, anyway. As long as Morency holds on to the ball, I'll be happy.

Swinton wasn't that stunning, i heard on some tv report or something, take away his 102 yard return... he average a whopping 19 yards a return. thats not exactly even considered decent

Well take away anyone's biggest return and their average will look at about 19-20ish.

That Morency looked really good returing kicks today. Good thing we cut Swinton and kept Hollings. Another genius decision by this coaching staff.
sarcasm?

I mean sure Reggie Swinton ran a 98 yarder back................

Oh wait, nevermind

Ummm

Hey Morency was a speedster back there! :pigfly:

Could either of them block a d-linemen and throw the ball and run run down and catch the ball? Pointless...
