The Houston Texans have announced a trio of roster moves, including the signing of free agent safety Quintin Demps.

Demps was a fourth-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2008 and played in all 16 games as a rookie and in nine games in 2009. But he was waived before the start of this season and hadn’t caught on with another NFL team until now.

From your link...

Finally, Houston has added defensive tackle Malcolm Sheppard to the practice squad.

That would be just what we need another safety that couldn't cover a middle aged man.
Maybe I missed something, but I thought he was solid while he was here.

He was good enough here to get signed to another contract. What happened after that is anyone's guess.

If my memory serves me correctly, he was pretty good in 07 then totally fell apart in 08 after he got his modeling gig.

Never heard of him, but I would just about bet that he is better than Wilson (who for some reason seems to have escaped a lot of due criticism on this board).

Yes he was out of UTEP. More of a center fielder type safety. Special teams guy I think.
Yep, did return kicks some. Seemed to play relatively OK for a rookie with Eagles when he was a starter. Questionable as to why he went from favorite to start to out of the league in total in a year's time though.

I dug up some info on Demps. The Eagles released him Sept. 4. He has been an FA since. In Oct, he was worked out by the Tits who passed on him. Seems like injury history is a concern.:

Philadelphia Eagles Player Spotlight: DB Quintin Demps
By Dan Dubrow (Eagles Featured Columnist) on April 18, 2010

The Philadelphia Eagles selected UTEP product FS Quinitin Demps in the fourth round (117th overall) in the 2008 NFL Draft.

At that time, draft experts raved about his ball hawking abilities, speed, and athleticism. Demps was breaking school and college records, such as total yards gained on INT returns (404 yards), which blew away the previous record of 256 yards by Richie Wright from 1986-88.

He also ranked second in Texas-El Paso's history for INT's, ending his college career with 17.

Since being drafted by the Eagles, Quintin hasn't translated his college skills over to the NFL as a safety. But his return skills are phenomenal and he has also been a warrior on special teams.

In his rookie debut, Demps ended the season with 1,314 return yards, which ranks second on the teams total return yards in a single season record, sitting behind only Allen Rossum who had 1,347 return yards in 1999.

On the other side of it, the coverage part, Demps has become a key element in the punting game as well.
In 2008, he ended the season second on the team in special teams production points with 338 and third for special teams tackles with 19. He had his first NFL start in the playoff win against the Minnesota Vikings, and also forced a fumble that led to a David Akers field goal against the Dallas Cowboys with five seconds on the first-half clock on Dec. 28, 2008.

His 2009 highlights include his 48-yard kickoff return, his season long, to start the game against San Francisco, which led to a TD. He nabbed his first career INT on Nov. 1 against the division rival New York Giants, which resulted in a Jeremy Maclin TD on the next play.

The thing holding Demps back is his injury record.

In his two seasons with the Eagles, he has missed ample playing time due to a variety of injuries.

In 2009 alone, he missed five games. He was out for two games with a hamstring injury that he suffered on Sept. 13 against the Panthers. He was also inactive against San Diego Chargers (Nov. 15) and Chicago Bears (Nov. 22) due to an ankle injury.

Then just over a month later, he again was sidelined for the Denver Broncos game (Dec. 27) with an ankle sprain.

If Quintin can just stay healthy, I think he can become a good safety but an even better CB. Many Eagles fans are thinking they will draft a safety in the first round of the 2010 draft, which could free up Demps to compete for a CB spot on the roster.

If not, having a very solid backup safety on the team doesn't hurt either.

Bird Drop

As part of his workout regimen, Quintin practices meditation which he says promotes focus.

"I started doing it in college. I just clear my mind and focus on the important things, which really helps put me on the right track"

Maybe some ankle weights would help, too.

Free Safety Demps Leaves Game with Knee Injury August 14th, 2010

Free safety Quintin Demps left Friday’s preseason game in the first quarter against the Jaguars with an apparent left knee injury, according to Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Demps left the game immediately, and the team was quick to announce that he would not return. He wasn’t a threat to start for the Eagles, but his loss would hurt their special teams coverage units.

BTW,

Demps, who has been playing in the UFL after being released by the Eagles in September, will likely see quite a bit of time on the field as the hapless Texans' secondary is seriously lacking depth at the safety position.

I liked Will Demps ... he was a decent player for both the Giants and Texans. I wonder what happened to him ... he can't be worse than what we are putting out there right now.

Rick Smith is doing his job. quality pick-up if he has rehabed fully from his knee injury. liked him coming out of UTEP. better athletic ability than Nolan.

I just finished watching a couple of Eagles games from last year, both wins for them.
Redskins (27-17) and Giants (40-17).
These are shortcut games that only show the core of what's going on.
Anything bad, they would capture though.

Not a whole lot of snaps (and not including special teams); only 3 against the Skins and 6 or 7 against the Giants.
But just based on these two games, I don't see how the Eagles would cut him.

He was in good position in all those plays and showed up where you would expect a safety to show up: around the ball... and on time.
(I'll come back and give a report on what I saw.)

CNND, can you please dig into those injuries?

This is all the info that I could put together in my additional research on Demps.......a little different than the article reported. Demps missed 9 games in 2009, including the last 3 games. He sustained what was characterized as a "knee sprain" on the opening kickoff of the 1st preseason game and missed the rest of the game. The next 3 missed games (weeks 2,3 and 5) were secondary to a hamstring injury (actually, although not counted as an additional missed week, that was a 4 week recovery span because it included the bye week [week 4]) and the last 2 regular games (weeks 16 and 17) and 1 postseason game (the only postseason game played by the Eagles that year----if they would have gone deeper into the playoffs, Demps would have like missed more) were missed secondary to what was characterized as an "ankle sprain." If the bye week wasn't in there where it was, he would have missed 9 games out of 18 regular/post season games played........a worrisome track record. The question is if he has successfully rehabbed to a point that he can perform to the level he did in his rookie year.

how about this guy? Can't be worse than Barber or....Nolan....or....whoever in the hell plays backup blackhole...err...i mean backup safety....
You may be right, but he has not been known for physical or sure tackling. My guess is that he is brought here for Kickoff returns...............25 yd average with the Eagles...........But for that you also need some decent blocking, which we haven't seen much of this year..........except for blocking in the back.

I wonder if sometimes those "injuries" are not really "injuries."

Don't you think that sometimes guys are shelved, with an "injury," because they want to demote the player and promote the 2nd string player in his place...so they devise an injury that puts the player on the bench? Not permanantly. Just a little time-out, so to speak.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying the guy is NOT hurt. I'm saying a guy is playing poorly, tweaks a hammy, and that's when the coach says "Hey, let's make sure you don't hurt it more." In comes the backup, due to a legitimate reason, and maybe the switch ends up working. In short, this allows a set of coaches to bench players without emasculating them in front of his teammates. It's an easier way to achieve a substitution, in terms of team chemistry and locker room harmony.

That's something I have always wondered. A coach really wants to yank the poorly-performing QB from the game, but only does so when the QB nicks his finger on a defender's helmet. Vince Young comes to mind.
