My offseason plans with a Mock for a 3-4

Currently based on the current standings, I have the Texans picking #14, and judging from the play I have been seeing that is close to where I think they pick. I am thinking 12th, but could be between 10th and 20th.

So based on the 14th pick, I see a coaching change and a move back to the 3-4. Say goodbye to Okoye, Daniel, Jones, and Turk.

I want us to sign two of the following FA NTs: Paul Soliai, Dolphins, Shaun Rogers, Browns, Alan Branch, Cards, Chris Hoke, Steelers.

The draft is as follows:

12 Brandon Harris CB Miami 5'11 195
44 Sione Fua NT Stanford 6'2" 307
76 Jeron Johnson S Boise State 5' 11" 194
108 Steven Friday OLB Virginia Tech 6'4" 254 .
140 Wayne Daniels OLB TCU 6' 2" 250
172 Kai Forbath K UCLA 6'0" 192
204 Derek Epperson P Baylor 6'3" 235

My 3-4 looks like this;
LDE - Williams,
NT - Soliai,Hoke,Fua
RDE - Smith, Mitchell
LOLB- Cushing, Friday
LILB - Diles
RILB - Ryans, Sharpton
ROLB - Barwin, Johnson
CB - Harris, Jackson, McManis
S - Quinn, Nolan, Pollard, Johnson

Fill the holes with vets that fit the new coaches schemes.

The more I think about this, the more I think it is possible. Cushing and Barwin would both be great OLBs is a 3-4, and Mario and Smith would still be great DEs. This is very interesting.

My mock partners Beerlover and rmartin65 have been discussing changing to 3-4. I am still not certain Kubiak is gone but would like to see a staff of Cowher HC, Kubes OC (He's great here and McNair has to pay him anyway) and a 3-4 DC.

Personally, I like Fua or Jerrell Powe from Old Miss 6'2" 330 in 2nd and your first is great. I think we might be picking in the 8-10 spot and Prince Amukamara could be there for our CB. I think KJ could do much better as the #2 CB in a 3-4 and agree with Quin to FS.

I'm not so sure that Kubes will be willing to take a step back into the OC job.

That's what he will have to do if he gets now offers to be a HC. And frankly right now I can't see any team out there wanting to hire him if he is fired here. Maybe after a couple of years if he proves himself as an OC again.

I guess I meant more specifically that he wouldn't want the Texans' OC job. It would be hard to stay with the organization and watch someone else take your job. I could see him accepting an OC job elsewhere though. Anything could happen though.

He could definitely afford to take off a year or two but he is making pretty good change for a OC and and may not get that elsewhere. I think his offensive players love him and with a new CBA in the future, why not remain here in Houston? The pressure would be off and he would soon be back in fans good graces cranking out points and yardage.

Since he is under contract, could'nt he just be re-assigned?

The problem with keeping Kubiak on board is there could be issues with player loyalties. I'm not against it, but I'm not sure it will help things.

Ya I suppose we could tell him its either OC or your fired. It would be interesting to see which one he chooses in that scenario.

Yeah, but if he got fired he would still get paid, so you tell him its OC or advisory role to Smith or whatever GM you bring in. If McNair has to pay him, make him work for you.

Not likely, but he is a very good OC.

How? If we hire a defensive head coach, he should have little concern about offense which again this year is very good. Red Zone scoring is up and should only get better if Gary can concentrate only on that. Now a new HC could have an uncomfortable feeling but can't see someone like Cowher caring.

Exactly. Gary would have zero opportunity imo for a head coaching job this year. I could see him going from goat to hero as an OC especially if team could start to win.

If we DO switch to a 3-4 defense, I would like for us to target Soliai or Branch because I am a firm believer that a NT has to be a big ugly and not a speedy burst-through-the-line type like Jay Ratliff. Anyways, with the switch to a 3-4 we would need the following:

DE: Aside from Antonio Smith and Mario Williams, we're gonna need a few more DE. Allen Bailey or Adrian Clayborn come to mind, although Bailey seems more likely.

LB: I think we may have the guys needed for a 3-4 scheme. Brian Cushing, Connor Barwin, Zach Diles, etc could fit well in a 3-4 scheme with some variations.

Always need to get some good FS and CBs in the draft, guys with agility and height would do.

Kubiak is under contract as the head coach. If he were signed to a personal services contract, that might be a possibility. If Kubiak's discharged from his head coaching duties, the Texans are liable for the remainder of his contract (2 or 3 more years). Without any additional obligations from Gary.

You still need some LBers. Cushing would be better served primarily as an ILB in a 3-4 IMO. We need to draft, or sign, a stud OLB to pair with a young and unproven Conner Barwin. Even then I think we need to add two or maybe 3 more. Cushing could play a little OLB like a Lawrence Timmons, but probably would be better at ILB primarily.

LBs in a 3-4 seem like a hit or miss deal. You can take a DE and try to convert him into an OLB (Matt Roth, LaMarr Woodley) or you can draft a guy who's played the position before (Von Miller) and UFAs pan out at times (James Harrison, Cameron Wake). But yes, I agree the sucess of a 3-4 defense depends on the LBs and we would need as many as we can get.

I am ok with linebackers identified in the thread. I think our defense would be much stronger. I am ok if we remain in a 4-3 but we need a new co-ordinator.
