Mario is on pace for 13 sacks

JamesBill

Waterboy
If he gets 12-13 sacks this year do you resign him in the summer or let him enter the final year of his current contract in 2011?

48 (I think?) career sacks and none of them could possibly matter less.

Another huge waste of talent.

Mario certainly doesn't bring it every down of every game but he has had several big sacks. They would seem bigger if our DBs didn't give up the yardage plus 10 more yards after almost every sack he gets. I bring him back. I mean think about it. His sacks on Sanchez this last game were in great spots. He is better than average against the run. Today he played like the season was on the line.

After all you passed to up to get him, and all the criticsm you endured and what he did to even reverse some of that criticsm. Mario is the part of the solution here folks, you don't let him go into the last year of his contract and risk losing him.

Yesterday, Mario wanted to win.

Yah but the problem is he won't want to win again for another 2-3 games..

Which makes it doubly important that you hire a coach who is capable of motivating Mario Williams. Guys like him are all over the league but they play their asses off for guys like Ryan or Payton or Belichick.

I know they all think the world of these coaches but who's making it their mission in life to show up every Sunday and play for 60 minutes week in and week out to show us?

Gary is an offensive "mind" but he's not a motivator. Nobody will run through a wall for Gary. Ever.

Mario would "look" a lot better if his supporting cast would help him out. I think that we need to spend some real money and get some real players to help. Brian Cushing was so worried about not hurting his friend, instead of trying sack his a$$. :smiliepalm:

I think the only thing that could truly make Mario show up and perform 110% every play is by conspiring somehow that the other team scratched his Lambo. I could almost guarantee that would motivate him every play.

Rex Ryan motivated Mark Sanchez by filling Sanchez's SUV with Packing
Popcorn.

No. But they will try to find an easier way around. Or maybe just take a nap and hope someone else runs through it first.

Players might really like the guy, but they obviously don't play their hearts out for him.

Sorry but in no way shape or form could you ever convince me that this year Mario Williams is the problem with the defense. You could also never convince me that somehow any other player on the DL is playing better than him as well.

He will get re-signed and everybody will be fine with it.

Mario played like a beast yesterday. He really brought his "A" game. If we could find coaches that could get this type of play from him more regularly, this would be a no brainer. But if we go "status quo" with this staff, he is just wasted talent.

who said don't resign him, I'm not saying he is the biggest probelm with this defense but he as one of it's top players is a leader/role model whether he likes it or not, and if we see him taking plays off we know that the "TEAM" sees him taking plays off and that must be ok right?

No it's not...

I think ragging on Mario Williams for "taking plays off" when the other 7/8ths of the DL is "just plain crappy" is pretty stupid. Maybe one season he won't have to account for 50% of the total sacks for the team. Maybe.

Every other DE in the history of the game who put up double digit sacks in a season is better!

/sarcasm

LoL, you guys just don't get it.. if he is taking plays off everyone will take plays off it permiates the entire defense, it's NOT a good thing to have one of your best players consistenly taking plays off..

I'd rather have a guy that only gives us 8-9 consistent play all year long

It's literally hilarious that people here will exaggerate their hyperbole to the point that they believe the best and one of the most unhelped players on the Texans defense is some sort of root of the problem.

I'm sorry but the only thing Mario Williams has "consistently" done since getting here is putting up double digit sack seasons and become more beastly against the run than almost any DE I can think of that can put up his kind of numbers in the sacks, hurries, and hits department. He'll have games where he disappears, but there are few DE's in the league who have as much ability as him and who get a sack, or a TFL or a bunch of hits and pressures every single game. I hope our young DL players see putting up those kinds of numbers as something to strive for because they sure as hell aren't even close to matching his "disappearing" production.

The whole "mario taking plays off" argument has been debunked so many times its not even funny yet some still feel the need to bring it out just b/c this guy isn't getting 3 sacks a game. As has been said by numerous sack artists & coaches, sacks come in bunches. The guy is a monster against the run & is basically the only real threat on the DL. His pralis playing against the run & him still being able to put up the sack numbers he does probably makes him the most complete DE in the AFC at the minimum. What the hell else do you want the guy to do?

win :)

Well, if Mario goes on a no sack streak again, he won't finish anywhere near 13 sacks. Given his play so far this year, you have to wait to sign him. He has not been productive enough to warrent a new contract this early.

I'd also consider him as trade bait from here on out.

I am with you on Mario so we agree there. However who did we pass up? Vince "I am walking out on you coach" Young? Reggie "Decoy" Bush? D'Brick "had issues with Mario" Ferguson? Matt "I am a Texan now anyway" Leinhart?

Any re-signing, if and when, will be during the offseason. The potential lock out during 2011 may effect some things. Assuming there is football to play going forward, you either re-sign him during 2011 summer or run the risk of him hitting free agency after the 2011 season. At that point, you'd likely franchise him and then negotiate a new contract, I'm assuming.

There is zero reason for me to even think about letting Mario walk during free agency. He is a cornerstone of this defense and would be extremely hard to replace.

I hope you didn't read my comment as criticism of Williams. More to the point of....

WHY THE HELL WOULD MARIO WILLIAMS WANT TO RESIGN WITH THIS BULLSHIT?!?!

He's got great numbers on a shoddy team, still got health, still got youth and still has a chance to play for a real team that would make a real difference. Give me ONE reason why he would want to play here anymore. ONE. Can you do it?

YEAH AND THE OFFENSIVE LINE SUCK SO BAD, THEY ARE GETTING DAVID CARR KILLED AND THEY CANNOT EVEN RUN THE BALL!!!

signed,

Fans who do not pay attention to the team

I am still hearing this gripe year after year because folks don't pay attention to what the Texans are doing.

AS for Mario Williams, I have said it time and time again, if you grade a DE on sacks and ONLY sacks, you have no freaking clue how the DE position is truly played...

Mario Williams "disappears" from games because teams know exactly where he is and run to the opposite side of him or straight up the middle. I see Mario flushing QBs out all the time, yet nobody is there to clean up, IE: Mark Sanchez on Sunday....

This. Julius Peppers just got 90 million, not all guaranteed, but still. That's a huge motivation to not take 7 mill a year with a team going nowhere (right now) unless he really enjoys living in Houston or something. The good news is that he still has a year on his contract, which means we keep him through the looming lockout year. Don't need to re-sign him in 2011, but his price tag could change considerably if you wait until the following offseason.

This is not a sack hungry team and it just does not fall on Mario. So, what if he does not get a sack in every game??? Amobi is not doing to much to help out and Mario and Smith are the two best on that whole line which is not saying much with the crap shoot the secondary is and Cody and the others are decent at best. I wonder how Mario would play on another team or with better players and coaching around him but Mario is good against the run and was moved around on the D line against the Jets as well. There are more stats than just one for every player in every sport and while most fans just focuss on the main stat which in this case is sacks but most fans sometimes ignore the other areas where any player might be helping the team in other ways and Mario has been doing that IMO. Sacks just are not everything in football.

IF u had to trade either Mario or smith next year who would u trade ?????

Becasue 1 of them is the reason why we are not getting better pressure on the QB

The leader for sacks by a DE has 8. Mario has 7.5. If the secondary can attempt to play some pass coverage this weekend, he'll be in the lead.

The QB throws the ball at the the very last second because he knows 95 percent of the time the guys are going to be open.

Your crazy.

The reason we have no pass rush is because our secondary is awful and a QB is almost always able to find a WR on the last step of his drop. Even if he isn't - he knows are DB's aren't going to make a play on the ball so he can afford to let it sail anyway.

It doesn't help Mario or Smith that we have no push up the middle either.

Finally, if we are able to hold the lead in the 4th quarter - you'd see a heck of a lot more sacks from Mario.

Who cares how many sacks he has? Obviously we're not winning. It's like getting a participation ribbon for showing up for the race...and not finishing. Yeah you get something but who cares?

Hey, don't look at the DTs for negative comments at the Jets. I think the pass rush was intensified by the fact that they were getting up field and causing that early heat for the Ends to close on. Mario got some, Anderson got some and the pressure was so great that a friggin defesive tackle got a sack. A legit one. Not a coverage sack. D Lewis for friggin president for real. I swear I saw Amobi Okoye making a difference in the game too. The heat was on and the secondary couldn't take it.

one thing I heard from Mario in a clip was that Bush let the front 4 play and they did play well yesterday (for the most part)

After 11 weeks, The Jets have allowed 17 sacks. Only 6 teams have allowed less sacks.

We got 3 of those 17 yesterday.

Of course I want to resign him. He is our franchise sack leader. We dont need another hole on defense.

The real question is, will he stay after his deal expires?

I think Mario would play better if the Texans had their best CB in the history of the franchise which is/was Arron Glenn IMO. And he was on his way out the door when he came here but my whole point is I would like to see how effective Mario would be with a decent FS and/or CB JMO.
