On their WAY to the Hall of Fame

While watching football their are players whose exemplary style makes the game fascinating while they're on the feild and you can tell with each passing game he gets closer to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I witnessed Roger Staubach, Earl Campbell, Walter Payton, Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long, Mike Munchak, Thurman Thomas, Jim Kelly, Daryl "Moose" Johnson, Lawrence Taylor, Jerome Bettis, O.J. Simpson and Mr. Warren Moon playing the game and KNEW they were to be enshrined. Here's a list of guys playing today whom I think are shoo ins:

Bret Favre (if he EVER stays retired)

Troy Polomalu

Mr. Ray Lewis

Mr. Andre Johnson

Ladamlian Tomlinson

Randy Moss

Payton Manning

Jason Witten (it PAINS me to give a Cowboy props...but he's the best man on that team and possibly the best TE in football)

Hines Ward

Miss Thomasina Brady (God I hate her)

Donovan McNabb

If I left any great ones out I'll mention them later, but who's on YOUR lists?

Dallas Clark?

Reggie Wayne?

Bem Rothelisberger?

Haoli Ngata?

Charles Woodson?

James Harrison?

To me, shoe in is someone who could retire tomorrow or have a career ending injury next Sunday and still get into the HoF. With those criteria, here is my revised list:

Bret Favre -agree

Troy Polomalu - not yet

Mr. Ray Lewis - absolutely

Mr. Andre Johnson - not yet

Ladamlian Tomlinson - absolutely yes

Randy Moss - yup

Payton Manning - 100% sure

Jason Witten - not yet

Hines Ward - probably

Miss Thomasina Brady (God I hate her) - yup

Donovan McNabb - borderline
 
Never happen because the HOF voters don't know jack about defense, but IMO, Casey Hampton ought to be considered.
 
McNabb is borderline as others have said. In that same neighborhood but not mentioned:

Brian Urlacher
Steve Smith (carolina)
Brian Dawkins

Brady? It's my fervent hope that Thomasina Brady and Bill Belecheat will get an American Film Institute award LONG before EITHER of their names are mentioned. It's my fondest wish that they be forever marred by their cinematic exploits and as tainted as Pete Rose is to baseball. In fact the fact that Belechick is STILL coaching and hasn't been BANNED from Football ASTOUNDS, ABHORS & INSULTS ME! I hope that if he and Brady EVER become enshrined that their middle aged GRANDCHILDREN will have to give their enduction speeches as they will be too feeble to utter coherent sentences.

Vugg Thomasina Brady, Bill Belecheat and the horses on which they BOTH rode.
 
The fact that Fred Taylor has not ever been a Probowler during his career beats me.

I have never understood why McNabb is widely regarded this way. I think his resume is outstanding. Everyone already knows that he's been to half a dozen Probowls and 5 NFC championship games. That alone speaks volumes. But I'd also like to point out that he is arguably the best QB to ever play the game when it comes to taking care of the football. He is #1 all time in pass attempts per INT, and #2 all time in TD-to-INT ratio (behind Tom Brady).

Some less impressive (but still significant) acheivements include: 3rd highest win percentage among active quarterbacks (trailing Manning and Brady), and one of the few players in history to record 25,000+ passing yards AND 3,000+ rushing (the others are John Elway, Steve Young, Fran Tarkenton, Steve McNair, and Randle Cunningham).

In my opinion he's one ring shy of being a first ballot shoe-in.

His tenure in Washington will let everyone know if it was all him or they system he was in at Phil. Doesn't look good for him so far.

What difference does it make? The body of work should speak for itself. Nobody is going to speculate how much benefit Manning gained from his system at Indy (okay, bad example maybe). Nobody penalizes WRs for having had great QBs throwing them the ball. These things aren't (or at least shouldn't be) considerations.

You do raise an interesting point, though. Does ending your career on a low note hurt your chances? McNabb is getting up there in age, and may be on the decline.

I think it will be called into question, but I just don't know for sure. He has had a very good career, be he also has a lot of detractors.

I think with just one ring, he's a shoe in. Without a ring he's borderline. I like him, I think he's a great QB but that's my opinion. Getting that close that many times and not being able to get one ring kind of tarnishes it.

for having the luxury to play behind the Bill's offensive line and throwing to the league's most elite receivers.

Yet, he still manages to throw 12 TD passes and only 5 INTs in 5 starts with a QB rating of 91.1.

I think I'm a little biased though. He's a fellow Crimson alum, ya know? :texflag:

Bill my brother the only way EITHER of us will get mentioned in the same breath with the hall of fame is if we get arrested for breaking in and attempting to steal the bust of Earl Campbell...or if we buy tickets.
