Accountability: Should McNair make a public statement...

cdollaz

Rookie
I wish McNair would make a public statement regarding his expectations for this season. Basically, come out and say that if we do not make the playoffs or have a very good record, that changes will be made.

At this point I'm not sure exactly what our owner expects of this team. Is average, or barely getting better, good enough for him? To this point, he hasn't shown that he holds anyone accountable for mediocrity, and waits for it to get truly horrific before he is willing to change things up.

To a certain extent, as the owner goes, so goes the rest of the team and the fans. If we know that our owner expects nothing less than greatness, then we will expect that also.

don't think your going to get that, especially after a WIN. defense blows, yes, but its awful hard to win in this league and the bottom line is, they did that today and another three times before today, 4-2 going into the bye is good, however you look at it.

I'm not bringing this up as a reaction to this game. After the 3rd-straight similar season last year, I just have no clue as to what our owner expects. I didn't necessarily think Kubiak should have been gone after last year, but he darn well should have been on thin ice. This should be a "put up or shut up" year, period. However, I'm not sure that it is. And that frustrates me as I'm gonna have a hard time continuously supporting this team year after year if I'm not sure McNair has the same lofty expectations that most of us fans have.

For now, the team has "put up." As long as we have a winning record, McNair will never threaten the coach.

I know the D sux. Everybody knows it. We're still winning so far.

Despite a 4-2 start, I presently predict this team to finish 9-7 or worse. Maybe when we are 7-7 McNair will say something, but then the last two wins will save Kubiak's job. It doesn't help that we are tied for the hardest schedule in the league. They need to stop screwing us around like that. Did we go to the SB last year? NO! So why do we have the toughest schedule in the league??????????????

So now we are blaming the schedule? Nice.

Dude, first off Kubiak gave this franchise thier first winning season in our history. Secondly, I think everyone knows that Kubiak is on thin ice. BUT, if we go 10-6 or 11-5 and DONT make the playoffs, would you really want Kubes fired? You would be a fool if you did. Not sure if you realize how much it sets a team back if you replace a head coach/coaching staff. I would be willing to stick with him assuming we improve from last year.

Yes our defense sucks, yes our offense is inconsistent but the fact remains we are 4-2 thru our first 6 games AND our main problem in the past is we would always start slow.

Every team, no matter who they are have weaknesses, ours happens to be our defense, but we somehow have managed a VERY respectable schedule run thus far.

Im happy with where we are right now. Am I satisfied? Not in the least, and I dont think the Smithak is either. Only thing you can do is work with what you got and adjust from there which if you ask me, we have done that this season.

Take a sip of the kool-aid, enjoy the win, and if your like me; go ahead and bang your head thru the wall next Sunday when Texans arent playing.

The schedule is a matter of chance that those teams are good. I can show you who our opponents are thru 2016 if you would like. Its not like one guy is making the schedules here. We face conferences that rotate every year.

I mean, did anyone think KC would be threatening when we saw them on our schedule this past off season?

You cant control who is good when you get them on your schedule.

Unless somebody is getting canned making a public statement is only going to undermine the coaches and make things worse.

Now if he wants to come out and say Frank is gone and he'll be interviewing for the position on Monday... go right ahead. :worldpeace:

Dude, first off it doesn't matter what Kubiak has done. It matters where he can take us. Secondly, I do not know that Kubiak is on thin ice. A contract extension doesn't exactly lead me to believe that that is true. Also, work a little reading comprehension in. Re-read my first post regarding making the playoffs OR having a good record. Lastly, you need to clue in to recent NFL history. It is VERY possible to turn things around in one year after a coaching change, especially when we have a decent nucleus. See the recent Dolphins, Falcons, etc. The idea that changing a coaching staff sets a team back is a fallacy.

shhhhhhhhhh......its time to go to sleep now rook.

What would McNair accomplish by coming out and saying playoffs or fired? Why would he do that? To do anything but show full support for the current staff would just be throwing them under the buss. You don't do that in any business.

Agreed, thanks for the second opinion.

Not only would that be absolutely ridiculous but it would probably have this message board explode due to pissed off rants on how our owner just made a jackass out of himself and our whole organization.

The only public statement he should issue if any at all should be a congrats to our team for beating a very formidable opponent and scraping out another come from behind victory.

I never suggested he come out and say "playoffs or fired." I said "playoffs, better record, or changes would be made." That doesn't mean calling out any by name or insinuating that it is any particular person or group. It could be head coach, coordinators, assistants, players, or front office personnel. And it should be those responsible for us not taking a step forward.

The reason he should do it is that it lets me know, as a fan, that mediocrity will not be tolerated. And that he cares.

I'm not really a fan of coaches, owners, etc. "throwing others under the bus" and calling them out by name, publicly, except in the most extreme circumstances. I do like it, though, when they say "things had better get better or something is going to change." What that change should be can be determined at the appropriate time.

You don't get rid of coaches mid-year. That's it.

Again, why would anyone do that when your team is 4-2?????

You may have a leg to stand if we were 2-4 but as of right now it is an outlandish request for an owner to say anything of that sorts when your team is leading the division.

Kubiak better have the balls to fire Frank Bush if the defense keeps doing what it is doing after this season

You didn't. But that's basically the theme of this thread.

The theme is: Is there any accountability on this team/what are the expectations of this team from the top?

Anything regarding firing coaches mid-season is something you have imagined, because it has not been insinuated, presented, or espoused in this thread.

If McNair came out with any, ANY sort of "statement" right now it would be bizarre and could only do damage. Even the dreaded "vote of confidence" would get a higher-than-normal billing on Sportscenter due to strange timing.

as for the thread topic

no and Bob is not going to say anything to the media esp during the season

Completely agree with you. Replacing assistants is much easier to do than swapping out coaching staffs. I expect Bush to be fired or demoted if the defense continues on this path.

Doesnt help Bush when two great players are lost due to injuries (Ryans and Barwin).

And yes, I know that our defense sucked before Meco's injury, imagine where we will be at now.

Guh.

I agree that the timing is wrong, but I think it would have been appropriate before the season.

I still dont understand why???

It is the goal AND expectation of every owner to win the Superbowl. Why would he even need to say anything??

Do you really think that he is ok with losing? If I really believed our owner was ok with losing or mediocrity, I would quit being a fan of this team.

Part of the stigma with Kubiak is that he tends to hire his buddies, or those that he has some type of connection with. Doesn't necessarily mean that they aren't the right person for the job, but it gives the impression that he would rather hire his friends than someone who may be better for the job, whether it is true or not.

When I saw Romeo Crenel and Charlies Weis in the booth/on the field today, I thought "how come we never hire coordinators with pedigrees like that." Maybe they have tried, maybe not, but we seem to hire a lot of coaches who are getting their first shot at the job.

If we have an average record again and have not progressed, yet big changes are not made, then yes, I will question how much our owner wants to win. This will be a very telling year in a few areas.

I would note that KC, hiring Crennel and Weis, also hired their buddies, if you know the history of the current regime there. And their head coach is getting his first shot at the job.

He only had about 19 games of actual coordinator/playcalling experience before he became HC, also. Kyle Shanahan has more OC experience.

The difference is that Haley's buddies have alot of experience and proven results.

I agree with you but I will add one caveat to that. If we take a step backward meaning a worse off record than last year.

If we go 9-7, I will be very pissed off but I still dont think we should fire the head coach.

I do however think changes need to be made in his staff.

As for him hiring his buddies; I think its more of him hiring those that will fit his system. Some hit and some dont.

We both want the same thing here which is for the Texans to succeed. Lets hope the FO/owner gives us the tools to do so. Kubiak needs to have control of his own staff. I will find it hard to believe that if we end the season and our defense STILL hasnt changed at all, that Bush will still be here.

If Bush stays then McNair will be looking at Kubiaks ass to be fired. Most head coaches will be put pride/friendship on the shelf if it means his job may be safe.

And I disaree with that 100%. If your last 4 records are 8-8, 8-8, 9-7, and 9-7, then you have no business continuing as the coach of that team. That is the definition of mediocrity and lack of progression. And if the owner doesn't see it that way as well, then I don't view him as someone who has a strong desire to win.

I was watching on TV and noticed McNair standing on the sidelines during the 4th.

Doesn't he usually stay in his Box in the South Endzone during the game?

Maybe being on the sidelines is "making a statement"?

Okay, and the people of this board care what your view on McNair is because. . .?

He'll do his usual song and dance about how happy he is with Gary and we had injuries and some young players and how we are just about to turn the corner and let's give it one more year.....

It's like deju vu all over again. Weak owner = weak team.

Mr Whipple should be the mascot.

I dunno. Mr. Whipple was pretty strict about Charmin squeezing.

Dude, I have never been in the "Fire Kubiak" club and you can research my statements on that.

That said, too many other coaches have taken craptastic teams and turned them around ASAP!

Also the Frank Bush hiring was assinine becuase there were other proven DC's out there and we just stayed "in house".

I know our schedule is brutal, but this team has too much talent with the exception of the secondary not to win MINIMUM 10 games!!! I have been on board with this team since day 1 and didn't even watch football between the Oilers leaving and the Texans starting, but you know what, enough is effing enough at this point.

Kube better win 10 games this year and have us either in the playoffs or eliminated from the playoffs because everyone else won 11+ games or his ass is friggin GONZO!!!!!!

:aggressive:

Isn't this between him and the Coach? What difference is going to make other than more pressure on the team. I can't see anything good of him doing that.

Is the coach the only person employed by the team that has to perform?

Do you not think that a bunch of grown men can handle some pressure? Better to have some pressure and expectations of performance than to not.

Crennel and Weis = Super Bowl rings

Regime here = not so much

I'm sure this is pretty clear to the team already it doesn't have to be a public statement. It's obvious that he wants the team to win, you aren't that successful in life by losing...

The Texans are 4-2 and in first place in the division. Any thing besides some generic statement about being happy about where are they at, but need to continue improve to stay there would be out of place and quite honestly from what I have seen from McNair out of character.
