Observations from the Cowboy game

1. Carr was a little off. However, missing the two surest hands on the team(Gaffney, Armstrong) certainly hurt. I counted 4 stone drops and at least 2 balls that probably should have been caught.

2. The Oline looked very good despite the penalties. This referee crew was flag-happy. For instance, Pitts was called for a hold on a successful screen to DD in the first quarter. His hands were a little wide but it was an absolute pancake and a play that seldom is called holding.

3. The shorter drops, the quicker throws, and the added motion is going to dramatically affect the ability to avoid sacks and keep the Defense off balance. However, as a unit, the offense definitely still lacks rhythm as a result of these changes.

4. DD looks very, very good. Let's hope he can avoid injury and fumbles. If so, he's going average closer to 4.3 yards a carry this year.

5. Seth Wand looked much better last night returning to tackle. He did a good job on Ware when he was in there. He maintained his blocks better and looked like the guy I thought I saw last season.

6. By midseason, our Oline is going to be considered one of the best run-blocking lines in the NFL.

7. Our front 7 dominated the Cowboy Oline much of the game. The Cowboys caught us in a couple of blitzes late in the first half. However, the Jones touchdown was a result of CC Brown's inexperienced play.

8. Peek and Babin looked very good and very active pass rushing. Babin is very solid in all facets of the game, IMO.

9. We're going to be much more agressive defensively this year.

10. Faggins didn't have a hangover from his poor game last week.

11. Lewis Sanders doesn't look good. He may not make the roster.

12. Our special teams looks very good. Its obvious that our depth has finally caught up with the rest of the NFL.

13. Milford Brown was at the very least a servicable backup RG.

14. Greenwood and Wong won't make as many tackles as the Sharper/Foreman combo. However, they will make more plays.

15. Hollings will not make the team and Bradford should not either.

16. D. Ware isn't as good as his hype- at least not yet.

17. McKinney looks like the guy we thought we were getting four years ago. He's not getting pushed back and is winning many of his battles.

18. Buchanan is going to frustrate. Especially since Glenn looks to have plenty left in the tank.

19. After watching Denver and Indy, the AFC is very deep and very good. It will be tough to make the playoffs despite vast improvement. I count 2 teams in the AFC that wouldn't likely have winning records in the NFC: miami, cleveland, and possibly tennessee.

20. I'm ready for the season to begin!!!
 
I don't think I know enough to be sure if I agree with everything you said, but most of that is very good comment. Especially the things about the refs, DD looking great, and Wong and Greenwood making more "plays" but fewer tackles.
 
I think Carr was thrown off by the big hump in the field at Texas Stadium. I’m sure his accuracy will return when he gets on a decent field instead of the Roach Motel.

I really liked the protection he was getting and the way he was stepping up in the pocket. Looks like we’ll see more deep passes this year.

Can't blame Palmer this time. It appears the playbook is "open", just the timing was off. They'll get it together.

Defense looked good.

DD looked great.

Morency needs more experience.

Banks and Hollings are done.

Swinton and Mathis=playmakers.
 
Cowboys outplayed us on 2 days less rest - yea, they had a game in Seattle
Monday night and then the long plane ride back to Texas from Pac NW.
Their skill positions were definitely superior to ours - their receivers caught
passes and ours dropped them, and they had 2 QBs who played better than
DC.
Most disappointing play of the game was Carr's interception of pass he thru to AJ in the EZ because he took us out of even shot at FG. That's a rookie or 2nd year play a QB makes, not a 4th year vet starter who is
supposed to be your top playmaker - that's how you loose games! You have to throw thow the ball where only your receiver can make the play !
Cowboys secondary was sharp and tough, the big safety/LB Williams was kicking tail and the corner from K-State (Newman ?) was playing very well.
On the plus side, D on balance had a decent half and O line was not too bad pass blocking.
I don't think we had any serious injuries ? DD was nicked up, but don't think it's a concern for 9/11 ? But we definitely weren't focused - hey, preseason game and it showed. Lets get by this last exhibition game in
Tampa with everybody ready for the real season opener in Buffalo.

If the Texans can seriously pound the ball when teams drop into cover two and dare them to run, then I think you will see sacks decrease and Carr's numbers really take off.
 
God, I hate preseason. Wake me up when it's Sep 11. If we look like crap on that day, then we can have reason to talk.

I'm speaking of the first team offense/defense. Certainly once Banks was in the game, the offense was very ineffective. In the first half Dallas really had zero sacks. The only one, was a scramble by Carr when he was tackled at the line of scrimmage. The Cowboy line was pushed back in the first half and the Texan line was driving the undersized Cowboys backwards... I don't need statistics to see that.

Here's one though: the Cowboys were 0 for 7 on 3rd down conversions in the first half.

ha ha what a joke u must of not seen the first half of the game. Houston dominated Dallas i don't even remember even seeing dallas get across the 50 except for that one drive... JJ look like crap i mean he had negative yards untill our second team d went in the game other then that good luck with jj cause he's not going to be going against 2nd team D after next week... Houston will win 8-10 games and i see Dallas winning 5 we played like crap but we still dominated dallas... and i guess Dallas looked Good against the Card's?... lets just hope you all have a QB by next season cause that'S when it really counts til then WE OWN AMERICAS TEAM !!!!!!!!!
 
:tv: Forgive me , I've been looking at QBs with a pretty throwing motion . I know I've got a nice QB at home with a lot of character who lets his Pa hang out with him But I feel I need more from our relationship .
I want the naughty guy who wins who takes chances I want a QB who's willing to roll the dice deep when he has the two fastest guys on the field .
I need adventure I need big plays I need a QB who has an aura . My needs are'nt being met . I need DR. Phil

Okay...some first half stats:

Houston - 2 for 11 on 3rd down conversions
David Carr - 7 of 19, 56 yards, 2 INTs
Houston first half offense - 140 total yards
Dallas first half offense - 155 total yards

But you may be right. I missed the first 3 series of the game (late arrival). If the Texans were pushing Dallas around but couldn't get into the endzone, did it look as if Dallas was playing a bend but don't break defense? It would just seem to me that if they were having their way with them that they'd at least have put a FG on the board.

3rd carry: 4 yards
4th carry: -7 yards
5th carry: 1 yard

So I'm guessng your first team defense was only on the field for the minimal gains?

And actually, Dallas crossed the 50 twice. Once on the 80 yd drive, the other was the missed FG just before the half after Carr's 2nd INT set us up on the 44 (so we only needed 6 yards to go but got 43).

How many times did Houston cross the 50? More than 2?

Bottom line, I don't think there was any "domination" in any aspect of that game. Both teams looked like they need a ton of work.

lol, I hear ya... in defense of the Texans, every time we looked to throw long I saw that freakin CB #41 Terence Newman covering us like white on rice. Is he always that good or did he just have a good game against us?

No Dallas figured out we were playing soft on coverage and Bledsoe had four or five quick hits in a row. Houston failed to adjust quickly and they showed their youth and lost a little confidence. Just like that they went from playing stout (30something yards til mid 2nd quarter) to the back of their heels. That opened up the running game and Dallas executed a nice drive that Houston couldn't adjust to. Besides that Dallas was shut down.

The only difference in "domination" on both sides was Houston kept getting penalties that stopped them while Dallas simply couldn't do anything, until they scored. Dallas did a better job of adjusting to the way the game was going and came out 7-0 with the starters in.

Nice post although "dominate" may be a bit extreme. We were all looking for the pass rush and the o-line to show improvment, and they did. Im not worried about Carr or the phantom holding calls. Special teams looks better too. I look forward to the regular season. Go Texans :texflag:

I don't know, is that an observation based on this one game, or the preseason in total? If it's a one game observation, we could look back to Seattle/Dallas and figure he did live up to the hype.

But that's just me.

I agree, heck, he got 1 1/2 sacks last night while playing a little injured.

- A "little off" is an understatement... dude was horrible. On the positive side of things it looked like there were more opportunities for him to make plays... he just didn't get the job done.

- The 1st team line looked very good for the most part. Pitts has got to get his head out of his arse. He is good for at least 2 penalties a game.

- Anyone notice that the offense looked a lot like the Colts'? Carr's play action fake was identical to Manning and the receiver looping back into backfield looked very familiar.

- Agreed. And Morency appears to be good for 5-10 carries a game.

- I didn't notice Wand... that's a good thing. You should never hear an offensive lineman's name called.

- Possibly. They ran the ball well in the last half of last year.

- The Jone's touchdown was on the entire defense. The only guy with a chance of tacking him (DRob) came from the opposite side of the field and thru the backfield. A lot of people blew assignments on that play.

- Hmmm... I hesitate to say that they looked "very good". 4 and 2 tackles respectively does not qualify this imo, but they did make a few more plays this week.

- They don't have a choice here.

- Second leading tackler for the game. He did give up a TD and got kind of lucky on the penalty call.

11. Lewis Sanders doesn't look good. He may not make the roster.
- He should be gone.

12. Our special teams looks very good. Its obvious that our depth has finally caught up with the rest of the NFL.
- Special teams has been the highlight of the preseason.

13. Milford Brown was at the very least a servicable backup RG.
- I guess.

- Greenwood didn't get credited with a single tackle. This guy has underperformed so far.

- Yes and yes.

- He's already better than Babin was last year.

give Dallas some credit, they won the game convincingly & if we can't agree that winning in pre-season is important then at least give their 2nd & 3rd units the nod for being better. that being said I'll be more concerned when the regular season starts :texans:
