Amen. It took baseball YEARS to bounce back after the strike, and even then they had to use steroids to get people excited again.

Aye. I'm pretty fed up w/ all this stuff at this point, hell part of me hopes the lockout happens and has some devastating effects for the NFL/players to maybe humble them a bit.

I suppose that the networks will be in talks with the United Football League. I think I'll root for the Omaha Nighthawks.

I've heard rumors that NBC has approached the UFL about a potential TV contract if the NFL does have a lockout. One of their supposed requirements is that the UFL expand to at least 12 teams, instead of the 8 that they had originally planned for. I want the UFL to do well as an alternative league, but I'm not so sure if expanding that fast to 12 teams will be worth a TV contract that may only last for the duration of the lockout. But if they can get a longer contract, then it might be worth the risk. I'm cheering for the Omaha Nighthawks right now, but LA is supposedly next in line to get a team along with Portland and San Antonio.

If there is a lockout so what... It to me is a game, a form of entertainment. If they play, great, if not, it is not really that big of a deal. Go do something else.. play golf, go to the movies, hang with your kids... It would matter not 1 bit to me at all if they do not play. I have other things in my life that I would do to not let it bother me.
The day I let football or anything for that matter to me that is purely entertainment bother me or disrupt my life, is one day that I hope is the last day on earth for me..
Lock them out, let them play.... either way !

I wish they'd do a short term extension of what they've go right now. The owners and NFLPA can continue argueing about the %'s....
But let there be a 2011 season!! To come to a happy medium just come up with a rookie pay scale. The "savings" from rookies will trickle to the veterans as the will get what they want: more money.
The owners have less risk as they're paying for proven players vs unproven rookies. Do that, let football continue and then debate about what % of income should be split.

I enjoyed "Scab Football" back in 1987. I'll enjoy it again in 2011.
The Oilers had a good scab team. If not for them they would have not made the playoffs that season.
What I don't get about these Lockouts is why don't they get this crap handled before it affects a new season?
If they are going to cancel the 2011 season why stop there? Why not cancel the 2012 season also?
My point is if they feel they can get it done by the 2012 season what's really stopping them from getting it done this offseason? Do they really have to have some stupid last minute stand off?
That is what happened in the NHL and an entire season was lost.

If the NFL announced today that they would start to field a Non Union Team in 2011 if a CBA wasn't reached by March, then you might have progress.

I wonder if it's like mafia wars.
Things are peaceful for a long time, some stuff happens, it builds up a little bit more each year, and then there's nothing left to do but get all of that energy out and into some action.
It's blowing off steam. It's getting it out of your system.
Then they see how much of a toll it's taking, how costly it is, and how nobody is really benefitting from the war, and they shake hands and call it a day.
Think ALLEY FIGHT in the movie Anchorman. They're lampooning it. Those wylie anchormen, having all that stored up angst and passion, have just got to let it all out and clear the air.
That's what's happening. Over time, both sides have been taking their little shots at each other, they each believe that their own stance is the right one, and so there has to be a little war. Clearing the air.
Everyone will see how stupid it is. They'll wish they were back to work, putting their energies into their actual work, and then it'll be done.
With several years of peace afterwards.
Only to someday start up again.
It's cyclical. It's a guy thing. Except our cycle isn't once-per-month.
It's more that that for the owners. Remember, most owners have other businesses that make them plenty of $$, even in the absence of football...not so for the players. It will take the loss of game checks (or at least the threat thereof) to make something happen. Make no mistake, the power dynamic shifts strongly to the owners and only gets moreso over time.

Both sides stand to lose money, the MNF deal was just signed was huge and the NFL broke ratings records this year. The owners don't want to mess with that profitability (plus revenue from team costs: concessions, jerseys, etc) and the players know that if there's a lockout, they won't have game checks. But, the players have more to lose, that's why it's important to sign that petition to let the owners know how strong the outcry is.
And how do we let the players know how strong the outcry is?

The players, while they make millions, are usually not as smart with their money. Many have to make significant lifestyle changes upon retiring. The players would be smart to not let the season slip away. They know there is not much else they can do with their skill set other than play football. Unless they wish to retrain and learn a new skill set, the players are SOL.
The owners know that the players are replaceable...the average career is less than 3 years. Owners are not as easily replaceable and typically last much longer.

I'm curious to know which team you have bought season tickets for? The nearest AFL team for me is the San Jose Sabercats. I've never been to a game before, but I hear its pretty exciting. Maybe I'll give it a go this time around.

On a single issue I have read about a few times. The players need to stop their bitching about an 18 game season being too long or hard. They are alone on this one as the fans HATE having 4 pre-season games. Just negotiate for compensation of those 2 games.
Also, dont tell me that the owners are trying to sqeeze yall by locking you out of the stadium. If you get locked out go get a job and pay the bills. Or use your savings. If my company locked me out I would be forced to live off savings and a crap job that I can get in this economy.

Come on Super Mario, you know you were too busy living in a 5k sq. ft. house, leasing a new range rover and porsche every 6 months, making it rain at clubs, "investing" in awful business ventures of friends and flushing benjamins down the perverbial toilet called a posse. New Orleans Voodoo. We lost our franchise when the AFL went "bankrupt" again two years ago. But this offseason the Shreveport team moved to New Orleans, reviving the Voodoo. I had season tickets since 2006-ish until they folded, and now have them back.
The AFL is a great value and the crowds get pretty rambunctious. The league is pretty lenient with regards to fan interaction (since they don't want to lose what few paying customers they have), so people tend to "take over" the game.
Prime example: The Voodoo have one of the most significant home field advantages in the league. We do whatever we can to make the opposing team feel not-at-home. When doing player introductions for the visiting team, we traditionally play "The Wheels on the Bus" throughout the stadium for them. Whenever a game turns into a blowout in our favor, someone almost always breaks out a beach ball, which the crowd cheerfully bounces around the entire arena while what little of the game is left.
When the game is over, they open the field so fans can go down and get autographs directly from the players, free of charge. Or you can just go down there and play a little football on the field yourself if you want. Try to kick FG's, etc.
And of course, the game itself is always spectacular. If I were you, I'd give it a shot. The Sabercats are one, if not THE, premier team in the AFL. They are easily the most successful franchise in terms of fan support and championships. Tickets are always dirt cheap. Get a friend to go with you and give it a shot. If you don't like it, then no biggie since it was only a couple of bucks (literally). If you do like it, then even better.
I traditionally ran a New Orleans Voodoo blog since The Times-Picayune really doesn't give the AFL much respect. I am strongly considering re-upping the blog as well. I love the AFL.
Just curious can't remember, but were than any union members that crossed the "picket line" back then ? And BTW if I understand it correctly, this year doesn't involve a potential strike but a potential "lockout", which means all players, union and scab, are locked out ? Right ?
