Mark Anderson will sign with the Texans

per Schefter's twitter

http://twitter.com/Adam_Schefter

"One day after Chicago released him, DE Mark Anderson will sign with Houston. Anderson and Texans LB Demeco Ryans were teammates at Alabama."

Anderson had a great rookie season with 12 sacks as a pass rush specialist but hasn't done much since.

Maybe he can regain that form here.

Scouting Report from ESPN
Grade: 68 |

Comment: After only two starts in 2009, Anderson is slated to see more time in the Bears' defense this coming season. He plays with a high motor while making plays with instincts, effort and speed. He has good range in pursuit and can chase down ball carriers from the backside. Anderson uses his length and hand quickness to separate from blockers. He isn't powerful and can get smothered and locked up if larger blockers engage him early in the play. His speed and quickness allow him to get to the quarterback effectively. Anderson isn't great anchoring versus the run and often will give ground versus double teams or powerful blockers. He reacts well and appears to realize his limitations and adjusts accordingly.

Nice pickup, was hoping Texans would land him! Really surprised Bears cut him.

Anderson said a broken finger and pulled groin contibuted to his slow start this season. He can be a liability in run support, but has nice backside pursuit. Has potential to be a solid rotational player, gives us speed off the edge.

I just heard them talking about this on 610, Don't know much about him but hopefully he works out good for us.

With Mario and Smith at DE, he doesn't have to worry about anything but getting to the QB. Who do we cut to make room for him?

Dont believe that they have to make that decision until Brown returns from his suspension ..... but your guess is as good as mine.

I wouldn't get too excited with a DE on a Chicago D that from 2006 to 2010 has gone (starting with 2006) with 12, 5, 1, 3.5 and 0 sacks respectively...........and no season with greater than 25 total tackles.

Nice to see the FO bringing guys that have the potential to help right away. Not expecting great things but with Ogunleye and now Anderson we should be able to keep fresh, effective rushers on the field.

Maybe Nading gets cut?

When a team cuts a player and then he's lucky enough to get signed by another team, it's often times a ***** slap from reality, and they change and become more motivated. It's a wake up call. Hopefully this experience will have an effect on Anderson to motivate him.

I do like the fact that the Texans are continuing to try to fill this void.

CND,

If we get 3.5 sacks from him then it was an excellent pickup. They are just searching for a guy that can rotate in on some passing downs and sometimes beat a tackle in a one on one passing situations. So, this is an encouraging pickup. My guess is that Ryan Denney will be released.

Ogunleye looked slow to me but I think he looked to have decent leverage and wasn't manhandled. Nading actually had a decent day rushing the passer against Oakland and I think he sticks around because of his value in special teams.

Already ok against the run IMO so just CRUSH the QB!!!

When the ball is snapped as long as he is getting in the backfield with pressure of any kind that would be great.

I really feel sorry for Eli Manning right now. Last I heard the Cush is driving around Houston right now looking for him........:roast:

The reason I brought this up is that the Bears have had a pretty darn good support DL. A Chicago fan related that Anderson has been so weak on the run that teams have changed plays at the line that were obvious passing situations, and run right over him. I'm hopeful, though, that our scheme is more protective of that scenario. If so, he could indeed be a descent additional cog in the wheel.

That's great news, CND! Thanks for that tidbit!

Go Texans!
We should use him in a 5-man front.

Utilize his pass rushing skills, keep the two LBers in the middle (for contain, such as a draw play) or on the edges looking for those little outlet passes to the RB when the QB gets hurried (or in a screen pass situation).

Seems like a plausible way to use a guy whose strength is in pass rushing and not in run stuffing.

I think he becomes the stand up guy Barwin was.

Ok, so on passing downs...

Mario - Mitchell - Smith - Anderson/Ogunleye

Cushing - Ryans - Diles

That's a pretty decent crew to blitz with. Some athletic defensive ends to drop into coverage also.

EDIT - Take Diles out for McManis in Nickel stuations.

got this from a knowledgeable bears fan:

"Bears D-line was sack crazy and other lines used to key in on Tommie Harris before he disappeared. Probably half his sacks were just from being completely unblocked. He's not particularly great at shedding them, and he's useless vs. the run."

so yeah... who's getting cut?

Guess Barwin's injury was a wakeup call on our poor depth at DE. Much as I like a guy like Nading, we've signed two guys who at least have a track record of production even it Anderson's has tailed off.

Actually, I think it was Bulman's injury. From everything I've heard and read, the Texans approached Aaron Schobel about signing prior to Barwin getting hurt.

Again our front 4 has been issues and we have been working hard to address them, Schobel came in out of shape so he wasn't ready to go so they are continuing to look for someone else to help Mario with a consistent pass rush.

I see this as a continuation of them trying to find another diamond in the rough to get us through this year, until we can improve the talent level. Injuries have not helped but I would suspect we go back to DL pick in the first/second round again.

Either way, good to have it addressed. Does anyone see either former Bear sticking around for longer than the rest of the year?

I think Mark Anderson was the person who gave DeMeco a run for his money in the DROY voting. Im also pretty sure that Wally Ogunleye was also on that line.

It's a good pickup. He may be a run liabillity but he could replace Barwin.
I'm hoping that we start seeing some more exotic blitzes from this team that we've lost since Barwin got hurt.

I love this kid he can play pretty good and glad we got him this guy is a young player who pass rush skills. Nice pick up mr. smith now all we need to do is trade for a young veteran cornerback like Aaron Ross to help out our young secondary.

Sounds like Ogunleye wasn't the guy we needed and he knows it.

Anyone believe Anderson can get to his old form here? Chicago didn't think so. Not being critical, just wondering if anyone knows much about him other than his rookie year...

Interesting question asked on Matt Williamson's chat

Do you have any insight on why the Bears released Mark Anderson? He had the most QB pressures on the defense, but Lovie stated they wanted to improve their pass rush. Kind of strange if you ask me.

Matt Williamson (12:39 PM)

That is an odd move. Seemed like a good fit opposite Peppers and in a rotation. No clue on that one.
Could there have been a personality conflict? Or is Lovie Smith just trying to deflect attention from the Bear's woeful rush defense as someone posted above?

edit: Except their rush defense is 8th in the league.

Seems like a lot of Bears fans were surprised by the move...

Most of them aren't torn apart to see him go, but they aren't saying that he royally sucks either.

I think that with some good coaching he can provide some burst off the edge in passing situations.

I think it was just a lack of production. Doesn't mean Anderson can't turn his career around here, as Jason Babin seemingly has in Tennessee.

Seems a lot like the Okoye situation here doesn't it. Terrific as a rookie, and then declining each year in stats. In Anderson's defense, he had to battle injuries for a couple of years. And this year he seemed to be playing well, but did not have sack numbers.

Salaam was signed to take over Brown's spot. Right now the team has 55 players if you count Brown and Cushing. Obviously Cushing is back, but I haven't seen who is getting released with his return. I'm thinking either Denney or Ogunleye would get cut to sign Anderson.

I haven't seen anything official on this signing so I don't know if it's really a done deal.

The Texans have waived defensive end Ryan Denney to make room for defensive end Mark Anderson.

Denney was signed after they lost defensive end Connor Barwin to a season-ending foot injury.

Meanwhile, the Texans have a roster exemption for outside linebacker Brian Cushing, who'll start Sunday against the New York Giants. They'll have to waive another player to make room for Cushing.
Who's next?

My money is on Ogunleye.... I'm not sure that's the right call but we're pretty thin at other spots.

Cut Paymah?
I'm thinking it will be one of the LB's. Either Greenhouse, or Dixon...

may waive Greenhouse and try to sign him back to the PS.

Either Paymah, Greenhouse, or Ogunleye, I think.

Greenhouse is a ST monster and that might keep him on the squad. Paymah was signed for ST as well. So it comes down to a rotational DE or ST.

And your logic with Greenhouse and Paymah is right along with mine.

Which leaves the rotational depth DE which is what we just signed....

If I'm Ogunleye, I did this: :wadepalm: when I saw they signed Anderson.

I think Paymah stays. He was an absolute stud in punt coverage last week. He was the reason for fair catches and the 1 yard return they had.
