Some thoughts on the Houston vs Dallas rivalry, and the game...

Hello Texas! The first thing I would like to address is the Houston vs Dallas rivalry... I think this is more of a factor for the Texans and their fans, than it is for Dallas... I can see why the Texans and their fans could feel like the step-child... But as for myself, I've always liked the Texans, because I myself am a proud Texan, and I have respect for the name and the unique history it represents... Then there's the supposed rivalry between the two cities, I don't really go for that either... I love visiting Houston... Houston's just like Dallas, except it looks a little different, and it's a lot closer to the coast, which is cool... The Geto Boys, Scarface, SPM, and a ton of great athletes, I'm a big fan of many things Houston... The Texans are by far my favorite AFC team, and this current version of the Texans is quite good, fun to watch, and has a lot of likeable guys on it... I wish more of you would have just a little love for the Cowboys, if only because they're the only other team Texas, and they're not even in the same conference... We play once every four years, I'll hate the Texans for this week, but then I'll go back to rooting for them the rest of the way... Not that I don't acknowledge the rivalry, I do want the Cowboys to have the bragging rights in Texas, but I would never root for a team from New York or Pennsylvania to beat a team from Texas, never... Again, I would feel totally different if we were in the same division, or even the same conference, but it's once every four years...

As for the game... I think it would be hard to find two more evenly matched teams... It's funny that their strengths kinda mirror each other... You could say Johnson>Austin, Schaub>Romo, Daniels>Witten, Williams>Ware, and I could disagree with you, but I think we can all agree that those are all elite level players either way... Dallas might have slightly better RB's, but it won't mean much, because Houston definitely has the better OL... Dallas can't force any turnovers on defense, and they can't stop committing turnovers on offense... Dallas has only 2 sacks in 2 games, that's not gonna cut it against Schaub and Johnson...

Dallas is not looking good, and I know that can change from week to week, but I really don't see them suddenly getting it together and playing the type football it would take to beat a team like the Texans, and on the road no less... The Texans are too hungry... In years past, this would have been the game where the Texans would usually suffer a let down of some sort... But this year's team looks and feels different, they seem to have come of age now... This game will propel the Texans to the playoffs, and propel the Cowboys out of the playoffs... I think Houston will win big, but hopefully Dallas will nut-up and at least make a good game of it...

I have no idea what to expect from the Texans this Sunday, but I will say this, they are beginning to look like a real football team now. If the Texans cross that mental bridge to playing with fire every game there are few teams in the NFL that can play with them.
 
The few times I've watched the Cowboys play lately, there just seems to be a powerful undercurrent of confusion and disorganization, a feeling that everyone is pulling in a different direction. I've got respect for Wade Phillips as a coordinator, and of course we love his dad around here, but I'm not sure he can overcome the king of meddlesome owners. Even Dan Schneider, who was giving Jerrah a run for his money for awhile, seems to have hired someone competent, and then shut up. I guess it all depends on what Jerrah really wants.

I keep thinking this will be a game where the Texans come out overconfident, because there was a time not too long ago when a two game winning streak was an accomplishment. But I'm starting to get the idea that those days are gone, and that the Texans will come out sharp and fired up this Sunday.

The Cowboys could certainly win, they've got the talent and they're desperate, but they're going to have to play a lot better than they've been playing. And they haven't seen a Texans team like this before.

I for one, dont hate the cowboys. Just not a fan. And nothing would please me better to see an All-Texas Superbowl.

You and every other Dallas fan can get over themselves. I mean, I appreciate that you think you're extending an olive branch here, but the undertone reeks of exactly why we don't like Dallas, and it really has very little to do with football. Yes, y'all have rings. Congratulations. I don't care. The Spurs have rings in basketball and I don't dislike them like I dislike Dallasites because they don't act like jackasses (not saying you personally are, just in general).

1.) There is no sustainable rivalry between the teams. They only play once every four years and the game has no more bearing on the standings than a Houston-Detroit game.

2.) Any time the Texans have played a quality team, they've expressed the importance of the game. The Cowboys have been a quality team from time to time in our short history, so there's going to be a little importance placed on the game from that standpoint.

3.) Any time any team plays a self-important pompous bunch of overrated jackasses, that team is going to relish taking said jackasses down a notch. That's just the way it is.

4.) The only reason there's any rivalry-type tensions between the fans is because you get pompous jackass Dallasites pretending that they're better than anyone else. We encounter better manners from 30 other NFL teams' fans than we do from y'all. Try a little grace and humility and maybe you'd find that Houston fans are pretty down home. 30 other NFL teams see that from us - y'all haven't deserved it yet.

5.) This is not the Texans' Super Bowl - it's just one more speed bump on the way to the playoffs. For your team .... well, we'll see, right?

....and I don't know where they get that. Like any team other than the Cowboys MUST feel that way if they dare live in the same state. F 'em. You said it better than I would have.

Eridoc kinda nailed how I felt reading your post. I can't rep him again, or I would.

The sad part is, I am sure you came here in good will and are now a bit offended by the reception you are getting. If not a lot offended. We are probably reinforcing your view of Texans fans. Please understand that the bolded part of your post came off to me as patronizing. So everything after was tainted by that.

I call BS on the fact that we feel the rivalry and Dallas doesn't. That is something Dallas fans like to emphasize to make them feel superior to Houston fans. If was was true, they wouldn't feel the need to say it so often. A case of Dallas fans doth protest too much.

As for a discussion about the game...

I think it's fairly homer-ish to imply that Austin could be a better receiver than Johnson. Andre has a well-established career in this league and has been dominant for a long time. Austin is just getting started. I think he is and will be a great receiver for a while, but right now I don't think there's even an argument there.

Personally, I feel Schaub is a much better QB than Romo. I've always felt like Romo's trademark is that he's the luckiest QB in the NFL. I swear every time that guy fumbles a football it bounces right back into his hands in stride for him to be able to make a play. Schaub lacks good arm strength, however, and his pocket presence is shakey at best on occassions, I definitely think Romo has him beat in those two categories.

I will not hesitate one bit in saying that Witten is better that Daniels. I have always loved watching Jason Witten play and feel that he is the best TE in the league. Owen's blocking has gotten much better this year, and I feel that if he returns to form in the passing game, he'll be a definite number 2 in the league. I would always pick Owen first, but Witten is definitely better.

I think in comparing Mario and Ware you're almost at a wash. While Ware rushes the passer (and is very good at it), he also plays coverage and is asked to do different things than Mario. Mario is a complete DE, he is definitely one of the best pass rushers in the league, and he is probably the best run-stopping DE there is right now. But he is rarely (if ever) asked to cover, which I think makes it impossible to compare the two. I think it's a toss-up, and being a Texans fan I will take Mario, but I do feel that Mario is a better pass rusher than Ware, although I feel Ware probably has better instincts.

Don't think like such a Cowboy fan. There is no inferiority complex and if there is I feel sorry for the Texan fans that feel that way. As a Houston sports fan I don't like Dallas sports and their fans just make it worse. Sometimes it's just as simple as that.

As an Astros fan I guess I could see where thay are coming from, though. The Rangers have years to go before they can look the Astros in the eye.

Nice post (though I agree with what eriadoc said about your post), but the cities of Houston and Dallas have been rivals since both were founded...and rivals on things much more than sports. It'll be that way until the end of times.

I am a proud Houston Texans fan. In no way whatsoever do I feel like a step child.

That is a slur Dallas fans like to use against us. Michael Irving calling us that on the radio waves in Houston.

If his wording had been, I do not view you as a step child......that would have been different. But telling me that he sees why I feel like a step child, did rub me the wrong way.
 
I might be in the minority, but I kinda feel like Demeco on the Cowboys. I don't really care about the rivalry that used to be with them. The titans have easily replaced the girls as my most hated rival. That said, I'd still like to beat the piss out of them because we need to keep building confidence and consistency.
 
Oh, and as far as the "rivalry" goes...just listen to Dallas sports talk radio and you will see there is a rivalry (how little or big it may be). Just yesterday on 105.3 The Fan, they did a side by side comparison of many things Houston vs. Dallas. There will always be a rivalry between these two cities, and when their football teams play each other, it's good for the state.
 
I think it is going to be a close hard-fought game and the team with the fewest mistakes wins. I give the Texans the edge on that one considering how you guys have looked all year.

Both sides have more than enough reasons to get fired up over the game. Dallas is desperate for a win and the Texans don't like letting teams come into their house and beat them.

I can't wait to watch Irvin fumble around for excuses on ESPN after the cowgirls lose.

I agree with you. The dislike I have for the Titans eclipses anything I feel for the Cowboys. That is our true rival, considering history and our division.

I've actually grown to be pretty apathetic about the Cowboys. I'd never root for them unless they play the Titans, but I just don't care otherwise.

The Titans on the other hand, I want to see them go 0-16 every frackin' year!

That being said, I really, really don't like the Cowboys this week. A win by our Texans would be another brick in the road for Cowboy-lovin' Houstonians to find their way home. :zipit:

Nice, respectful post. Rep your way. I got ready to hit the quote button to start laying into you after the first two sentences but then read the rest of the post and was impressed. Very fair assessment.

All I will add, and others have said it, is the only reason Texans fans have such hatred for Cowboys fans are because there are so freaking many Dallas fans in Houston. This would be okay if most of them were just Dallas natives that moved to Houston, such as my own mother, but the infuriating thing is the number of people born and raised in Houston that just chose to root for Dallas because they were a winning franchise. They couldn't handle the losing of the Oilers and the constant choke jobs, so they decided to root for the "other Texas team." It is just very difficult for me to respect anyone that does that. Support your hometown team. Tons of cities would kill to have a professional sports franchise, and Houston has a franchise for every major sport except hockey.

So support your Houston teams dammit and if you are from Houston, stop cheering for the freaking Cowgirls!

I don't agree. A Cowboys fan from anywhere besides the DFW area is far worse than a Cowboys fan in Dallas. I lived in the Dallas area for a couple of years and the fans there are more realist than obnoxious. Actually Dallas area fans are nothing like the ones outside of the area. Also, they should be Cowboys fans because that is their home team.

I have lived in several places and can say by far that Houston has the worst Cowboys fans. They were also annoying in places like Philadelphia. There was nothing like a South Philly Cowboys fans wearing gold chains and an Irvin jersey yelling "yo yo Dalles!". There is a good reason why the Eagles fans hate the Cowboys more than anyone else.

What rivalry? Mavericks/Rockets, yes, there is a rivalry there since they play in the same conference/division. Cowboys/Texans is about as much of a sports "rivalry" as Rangers/Astros. There is no rivalry on the field it is literally all in the fans heads.

And I agree to some point, but the players note that they realize how much it means to the fans, so that might inspire them more.

Actually, Astros/Rangers are more of a rivalry than Texans/Cowboys because at least they play every year. As some one mentioned above, this game means no more than Houston/Detroit.
 
I don't view it in the "rivalry" terms so much as I just want to see Houston top Dallas. It is a rivalry and I'm a Texans fan so that is obviously part of it, but a lot about little d pisses me off. How the hell does ESPN set up a dallas site but Houston, 3rd largest city in the country (I read somewhere we overtook Chicago) gets nothing.

Sorry, no apologies for me on not liking Dallas.

However, I will root for them and be a Dallas homer like no other when the play the Possum Squallor Hootinanies and Rudy while owner Satan sits in the seats flipping people off (Bud Adams). I H-A-T-E the team from the other state that starts with "t". :bat::bat::bat::bat:

Also, I would love to see a Dallas vs. Houston Super Bowl....that would be the Holy Grail and should have already happened once but I'll stop there.......:gun:

I don't support the 18 game format for the NFL, but if they were to go to it, I would love to see the Texans play Dallas every year in the regular season. Maybe NO as the other game, but that would probably not fit the NFL's parity rules for scheduling.

Anyhow, Dallas and Houston are always going to be rivals in whatever they do both in sports and elsewhere.

I didn't mean to offend, and I'm not offened either... But yeah, some of you guys have come accross as having a step-child syndrome, but I think that's only natural that some would feel as such... "Reinforcing my view of Texan fans", I never said that was how I viewed things, just that I could understand how some Texans fans could feel like a step-child... Not feeling as a step-child next to the Cowboys necessarily, but just feeling as the step-child in terms of the NFL landscape... The Texans are the newest arrival to the NFL family, and most of their siblings have already been around for 40+ years, and this is a family where the youngest usually get the least attention... The Texans don't have any signature moments, be it good or bad, that could change this season when the Texans make their first playoff run...

There's only like 5 teams that have a better than .500 record all-time vs Dallas, mostly AFC teams, and Dallas is within a few games of all them... The Texans and Dallas have only played twice! A 1-1 all-time record, not a big deal... If it gets to where Dallas falls behind 2 or 3 games all-time vs Houston, that's when it will start to become important to more Dallas fans.... There's just not enough history here, nothing to get me going in this rivalry... Beating Dallas in the Texans first ever game was a good start for the rivalry, but that was soooo long ago... A Texans win this week would really bug Cowboys fans due to the circumstances, but 4 years from now, I'll have all but forgotten about it... Hopefully our 4th meeting will come a lot sooner than 4 years from now, if ya get my drift... Now that would make it an epic rivalry...

This weeks game is huge, but not because of any rivalry... The game is huge because a very talented and hungry Houston team has a chance to get off to their best start in franchise history, which could help spring-board them into their first ever playoff birth, as this is probably the best team the Texans have ever had... Meanwhile, a very talented and desperate Dallas team is facing a disasterous 0-3 start, if Dallas wants to make the playoffs, they really can't start 0-3... Two very talented teams, that for 2 weeks of the season, appear to be going in opposite directions... After this week, the Texans will probably be the new best team in Texas, and that adds something to it, but again, that's circumstantial...

IRVING, Texas » The Dallas Cowboys are tired of hearing they need to try salvaging their Super Bowl hopes following an 0-2 start. All they want to focus on is their next challenge.

Well, that's pretty daunting too.

Against Houston tomorrow, the Dallas defense faces the dilemma of whether to try slowing the receiver who was just selected the AFC offensive player of the week or the running back who got that honor the week before.

With weapons like that, it's little wonder the Texans (2-0) go into this game leading the NFL in points, yards and yards rushing.

"It's time to call 9-1-1," Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said Thursday. "It's emergency, it's time to get things going."

Arian Foster introduced himself to Dallas with 110 yards on 18 carries in a preseason game. There was no chance of downgrading that after he ran for a Texans-record 231 yards and three touchdowns in a blowout win over Indianapolis in the opener. He was so good that day, their usual spark plug, Andre Johnson, was an afterthought, catching just three passes.

Against Washington, Johnson stole the show, catching 12 passes for 158 yards despite missing some time because of an ankle injury. Bum wheel and all, he managed to make a leaping catch in the end zone on a fourth-down heave with about 2 minutes left. That touchdown tied the game, leading to a win in overtime.

"He is a bad man," Dallas receiver Dez Bryant said in awe.

Foster was pretty good against the Redskins, too: 69 yards on 19 carries and 69 more yards receiving.

Offenses generally strive to balance running and passing in the same game. Houston's ability to dominate different games in each area takes the concept to another extreme.

"One week they run for 300 yards and the next week they throw for 500," Phillips said. "If you back off -- basically, that's what we did in preseason -- they can just tear you up in the running game. If you come after they can throw it. I'm impressed."

I wear my Texans jersey all the time and have never had a stranger comment on it.

Twice today - at the grocery store and at lunch I had strangers offer support for the Texans.

Yeah, Id' say this town is excited for our Texans! NOw we just gotta go get the W!!!
