NFL Power Rankings - Week 2/3

PockyAF

Waterboy
The Texans, on an average, are holding the #3 spot.

Bleacher Report - #3

Sean E. Douglas said:
Sure, this franchise hasn’t been to the playoffs before, but it clearly looks like this is the season they will break through. At this time, they have the Colts’ number and are the favorite to win the AFC South early on. I would feel better about ranking them at this spot if they continue to improve in the secondary.

ESPN - #3(7)

ESPN's Analysts said:
The Houston Texans enter the penthouse floors at No. 3, the franchise's peak in ESPN.com's NFL Power Rankings dating to the 2002 season. The Texans' road victory over the Washington Redskins impressed our experts, who elevated the club four spots. The Texans are hot on the heels of the New Orleans Saints and Green Bay Packers, who hold the Nos. 1 and 2 rungs, respectively.

Fox Sports - #4(7)

Adam Caplan said:
What an unbelievable road win at Washington. They really had no business winning that game, but give them credit for an amazing comeback. We'll see how good their defense really is at home this week against the talented Dallas offense.

CBS Sports - #3(13)

Pete Prisco said:
That victory at Washington is the kind of game that the Texans lose in the past. That offense makes them a threat every Sunday. Now they can win the state of Texas by beating Dallas.

USAToday - #4

SBNation - #3(9)

Power rankings sure are fun to look at when your team is doing so well. :bravo:

I really feel that these are a bit high.

Until we show we can stop someone's passing attack we are vulnerable if our Offense doesn't produce big numbers.

I agree with you. I think the rankings are bit too high also and for similar reasons. Giving up 800+ yards through the air in two games says anything but power.

However you rank Indy and Houston, it's gonna be a tough game on that Monday night. I just happened to notice that Indy and Houston have the same bye week, so both of us have an extra week to prepare for that Monday night game.

It's gonna be a killer game!!

I understand that we're ranked a little high right now. I view it as "compensation" for more than a few times when I felt that the various power rankings had us behind teams we'd either beaten or had a better record than. This is all just food for mid-week debate so it doesn't matter. Somebody is always ranked higher than they should be or lower than they should be.

If we beat Dallas we'll get another little push up. That will be particularly true if Pittsburgh finally drops one due to their QB situation. For some reason even when they're bad the Cowboys seem to be given more credit than they deserve and beating them, even when they're bad will carry more weight than it should.

Moot point of course if we don't take care of our business and lose to them. I still have more concern over this game than either of the previous two.

Dallas is going to be even more difficult than Washington, simply because it's Dallas. Add in that the Cowpatties are 0-2 and they HAVE to get their act togeather right now, or their season is toast. Dallas will come out swinging, this will not be an easy game as some might like to say.

I don't really think anyone here sees it any different.
But, are they really as good as people still say they are??

That being said I see a close Texans victory ala the 'skins game minus overtime.

We're at home with what will probably be the loudest crowd weve ever had.

Thats a big advantage comared to being in Washington

But I like Kubiak's ground game. Gary will take Dallass to the mat and go for the early submission with a rear naked choke. :strangle:

Did anyone else notice the unbalanced number of AFC teams towards the top? ESPN has 7 AFC teams in the top 10, BleacherR has 8 of top 10, CBS has 6. Just seems a bit dumb to me considering only 6 can make the playoffs from each conference.

Interestingly, we're the #1 team in the AFC as of their power rankings

It's not an odds of making the playoffs list it is a ranking of who is better. No reason for that to be even between the conferences.

I don't think they take conference into consideration when they come up with this stuff. I also think it's funny they put these lists together so early in the season. The reality of it all though is it doesn't matter whatsoever, this is the NFL not the BCS so I try not to put any stock in it.

Dallas was an 11-5 team last year and won a playoff game. If they ever get their heads out of their asses, they can make it back there.

We really have to come out on Sunday ready to play, Dallas is a cornered animal right now and will come out swinging.

I'd much rather Dallas have the same unbeated record right now as we do rather than a winless record, which makes this game clearly more important to them than us. And now we've had this "little" distraction with Duane Brown, not to mention a fall off in talent and experience at the all important LT position with Marcus Ware coming in, this Sunday is gonna be tough for the Texans. Real tough. Everybody just remember it's a long season, 16 games to the playoffs, and we are bound to lose some games, several of them for sure. Many had us at 0-2 right now, so were're in good shape, probably ahead of schedule.

F*ck that, we need to be kicking ass and taking names, no excuses!

So what you're saying is that this is their Superbowl...

So what you're saying is that this is their Superbowl...

Oh, my. THAT IS FUNNY, T.

I don't want to make too much of these power rankings. These are the same people who prop the guys up as playoff contenders, and conveniently forget all about them once they lose a game they probably shouldn't. Still, I say 31-14 Texans on Sunday. :fans:

Yeah, but giving up 62 yards (2.3 yds per attempt) on the ground over the same two games does.

It may be old school, but I still think run and stop the run is a good recipe for success.

Are we really stopping the run, or are teams just abandoning it because our pass defense is so porous?

I think its fair to say Indy passed because they were playing catchup all game.

Washington rushed 17 times for 18 yards.

What do you think? ;)

Also keep in mind opponents are only converting 27.3% of third downs. At least at this early stage, it appears this is a stop the run, "bend don't break" defense. Not saying the pass defense couldn't improve, but I'm not overly concerned.

Anybody think Al will shop Aso before the trade deadline? They'll be lucky to sniff .500 and they're pissing away a great corner's career in the black hole. Asomugha doesn't need an epic passrush and safety help to shut guys down; unlike Revis.

I would be willing to part ways with our 1st round pick next season and maybe then some for Aso.

My top 5 would be:

1. Green Bay
2. New Orleans
3. Pittsburgh
4. Indianapolis
5. Houston

I would probably have New Orleans at #1 but other than that it seems about right....maybe have the Colts over the Steelers but that is nitpicking.

It's nice to see us get some national run and we handled one week of success marginally well against Washington (a win is a win is a win) but this is the big test. If we can come out and put the pressure on Dallas, I think this team (specifically coaching) will have turned a corner. We CAN NOT come out flat against Dallas, and with a raucous home crowd, I can't see them coming out flat.

This crowd will probably be the loudest EVER for a football game in Houston. I am calling my shot on that. 19-10 was loud. This should be MUCH MUCH louder....

GO TEXANS

I would give next years 1st for Aso. This draft could be wierd anyways due to the impending lockout, plus we are going to 'hopefully' have a late pick anyways due to a quality record. I would give up the 32nd pick overall for Aso :)

just sayin

well time to head to the Little League field and get yelled at by parents for making the right call. fall ball starts tonight and I am behind the plate for two games tonight. Hopefully the catchers wont be too rusty after the long spring-to-fall layoff.

I don't understand the concept of a 2-0 team that has beat the 1-1 team by 10 points being ranked lower.

I understand it is the Colts but I thought this is supposed to go season by season and week by week not what they have done in the past.

Anyone know what the greatest drop in rankings over the course of a week is?

Seriously, we got lucky with the Colts with their banged up OLine and Foster having a seriously INSANE outing.

Redskins are possibly a terrible football team (losing to the Rams anyone) and we only just scraped by them on a miracle 4th down TD pass.

Then we get annihilated by the Cowboys who quite frankly weren't that impressive.

I seriously think that I would rate us around #18-25 bottom third of the league right now, alongside the Giants, Chiefs, Bucs, Vikings etc

I thought this team had "turned the corner." Yet, they still came out
lax at home to a team they KNEW would bring all it had. Three turnovers turned
into three Cowboy touchdowns. Sloppy all day long, and that's inexcusable.

The one that killed me was Foster's fumble.

I'd only just read the day or so before the game that he was hated in Tennessee because he was prone to big fumbles and then he lost that on Sunday..... the seeds of doubt were sown and watered, I just hope they don't flower into another Slaton-esque pattern.

Well, we can't be very high any more.

The Colts game just looks like a fluke. The Redskins are crap and we barely fought them off. And then we got steamrolled by a team that finally got its act together.

I wouldn't be surprised to see us in the high teens/low twenties.

We can still pull this all together but damn. We were sitting so pretty last week.

I think we should still be 3-1 at the bye but that would all be smoke and mirrors.

Oh come on. We lost ONE GAME and we should fall down to 17-23?

I could be wrong, but I got the impression that Foster was just really taking a risk trying to get yardage late in the game, trying to make something happen. Right now, I'm not really worried about that with him yet.

I'm not surprised that we lost this game. I think Dallas is a lot better than they've been looking. I still consider it an upset, but I didn't expect to beat the Colts; so, I'm fine with 2-1, especially with a division win over Indy.

I'm just guessing we'll fall to like 15 to 20 this week in those rankings. Let's just regroup and smack the Raiders! :fans:

Oh come on. We lost ONE GAME and we should fall down to 17-23?

WE lost one game. But look at who we beat... The Redskins and the Colts. The Colts are still good. No SB Curse. But the Redskins? We had to go into overtime to beat them and they were destroyed by the Rams. That makes our win over them very suspect AND makes our win against the Colts look like a fluke.

Now, I saw that we only dropped to 9 in the ESPN rankings and that's about where I think we should be ranked. But rankings are like a beauty pageant. I thought we'd drop further because on ESPN they keep saying how every year everyone picks the Texans to take that next step and they never do. I expected a big over-reaction from the press.

Prior to the season, the Cowboys were ranked in the top 5. After a couple of losses, they had dropped down into the 15-20 range. With the press having less faith in us than the Cowboys, I expected them to drop us below the Cowboys. They didn't.

Now we need to destroy the Raiders like we destroyed the Seahawks last year.

Yeah...but the Redskins beat the Cowboys, who beat the Texans, who beat the Redskins, who beat the Cowboys, who beat the Texans, who beat the Redskins, who beat the Cowboys, who beat the Texans, who beat the Redskins.......;)

Teams match up differently with their various strengths/weaknesses and sometimes teams just lay an egg. I'm not sure where the Texans really are, but I do know that Team A beating Team B who beat Team C doesn't mean A is better than C.

I wasn't saying that Team A beating Team B beating Team C implies that Team A is better than Team C. Your point is totally irrelevant to mine.

My point is that Power Rankings are beauty contests. And the "judges" of this beauty contest don't trust us to be a good team. I expected those judges who had shot us up the charts pretty freaking quickly to sour on us just as quickly because of the low quality of the wins. I expected their argument against us to be the argument that I gave:
1. We beat the Colts on a fluke
2. We barely beat a bad Redskin team
3. We lost to a bad Cowboy team

I expected them to drop us to the 17-23 range.

I was wrong.

We dropped to the 7-13 range. I'm surprised by that.

But it doesn't matter because these Power Rankings are just beauty contests. It doesn't mean that Team A is going to beat Team C if they play.

Power rankings are like movie reviews, they tell what others think of the movie which doesn't indicate whether you'll like it or not. With NFL teams, you're right, it means nothing as to who will beat who. We've seen the Texans beat better teams and lose to lesser teams enough times to know that.

It's fun to read and watch the media when your team is highly ranked, and irratating when your team isn't. And we all damn well know that. LOL

I don't care about us barely beating the Redskins, who lost to the Rams a week later. This isn't college football BS. I don't care about that stuff.

In the NFL, its "Any Given Sunday", and I think us coming back from 17 down shows more than us just "scraping by"

Whatever, like said, power rankings are pretty worthless.

Looks like people are gonna be dustin' off the old pink soap if this
keeps up. I sooooo want to be wrong about this coaching staff.

Really? This is a dumb statement. All in all, its ONE GAME!! We aren't a bottom feeder after one bad game.

No. We beat a team like a drum. Us playing deep zone let them make it respectable. We absolutely killed the Colts.

Dude.

I'm not arguing with you on that point.

My point was that I expected a lot of nay-sayers to make the argument that our win against the Colts was just a fluke and to use that to drop us further down in their little beauty pageant that doesn't mean anything.

I was not saying that beating the Colts was a fluke or that coming back from a 17 point deficit wasn't a quality victory.
