I heard an explanation of the rule from the former head of officiating in the NFL, and from that explanation, it was the right call.

But it's like the Tom Brady and the Tuck Rule -- they got the call right according to the rule, but the rule is absolutely terrible.

the rule:

"If a player goes to the ground in the act of catching a pass (with or without contact by an opponent), he must maintain control of the ball after he touches the ground, whether in the field of play or the end zone. If he loses control of the ball, and the ball touches the ground before he regains control, the pass is incomplete. If he regains control prior to the ball touching the ground, the pass is complete."

The question was whether or not he had the ball when it hit the ground and het let it go (very quickly) or if it popped loose.

The officials apparently ruled the latter, and based on that judgment, the rule says it's incomplete. I guess this rule is designed to eliminate judgment calls in terms of whether someone had the ball long enough, but that also eliminates situations like this one where CJ had the ball in clear control for a *long* time before the ball hit the ground.
 
That was a complete screwjob. That was a touchdown and its just garbage. Be proud of that fake win Bear fans.
 
BS rule and an equally BS call. IMO, Megatron clearly had possession and the only time he didn't was when he let go of the ball to celebrate.
 
What a ridiculous ruling. If I were a Lions fan I'd be running around breaking **** right now.

Nothing new. See Raiders Murphy last year. They say you must end up with the ball basically until you hand it to the ref when you catch a TD pass and are untouched.

Stupid, I know, but thats the way they call it.
 
There was a point where Johnson had both hands on the ball which should have been enough for the touchdown.
 
The halftime of the Skins and Cowboys just said the rule was interpreted correctly, and its the rule's fault.

Either way, it STINKS. That should be a TD.

Happens every year.

What's funny is that if you run the ball into the end zone, and the ball crosses the plane of the goal line...and you fumble the ball juuuust after it crosses the goal line...it's ruled a touchdown.

Why is that OK, but planting two feet and having control of the ball is suddenly NOT a touchdown?

This is a rule that should be stricken from the books. You catch the ball, it's secured, and two feet hit the ground, and it's still secured at the time the two feet hit the ground, then it should be a TD.

So if he had flipped the ball to the ref, instead of dropping it, it's NOT a touchdown? LOL. It's an asinine rule. One of the worst rules.

The NFL has the absolute worst rules when it comes to what they consider a damn catch. They expect you to catch the ball with your hands and then hold onto the damn thing for like 30 seconds before they want to call it a catch and I see it in games all of the time where it drives me nuts. Hell, we had an INT on Manning today that they called an incomplete pass but it was clearly an INT that turned into a fumble. I hate the rules of the NFL on catches as it is, but Calvin Johnson's catch today was clearly a catch and cheated their team out of a win.
 
not saying it's what the nfl's up to, but forcing this sorta controversy this early in the season just lowers credibility. /2cents

Yeah, the Lions got ripped off on that one. That should have been a TD. And if it's in the rules that it wasn't a TD, then the rules have to be changed.

If something like that every happens to the Texans, there is going to be a medical emergency in Houston when about 100,000 heads explode.
