Practice Squad set - almost

DiehardChris

You betcha!

They have named seven, with room for one more.

center Brett Helms, Offensive tackle Cole Pemberton, defensive tackle Malcom Sheppard, linebacker Isaiah Greenhouse, safety Torri Williams, receiver Bobby Williams and runningback Chris Ogbonnaya.

Interesting about Ogbonnaya. I liked him to the Texans in the late round in the draft last year.

Also - see? No sweat on Sheppard making it to the Psquad.

He is eligible but my guess is they are still weighing their options on a third QB. If nothing else comes up then I bet you're right and it will be JDB finishing up the PSquad.

Like I said in another thread, the only question mark to me is Helms. Ogbonnaya is a little strange, but not too out there. I would have preferred Bell, but stuff happens.

I have a feeling they have an offer in on Jeremiah Johnson also, and he has not decided which way to go.

I like the PS signings as a whole. Ogbonnaya has the ability to be a RB/FB. He has been a high effort guy, local kid also.

What ever happened to Anthony Aldridge? Last I saw he was with the Redskins.

Aldridge is still a free agent... but as far as psquad RBs, I like Oggy! He'll probably be replaced by Jeremiah when he's healthy though.

I like the list of players here! I'm glad no one claimed Isaiah, Cole, & Malcolm off waivers!

Did we fill the last spot on our PS yet?

Helms is a bit of a head scratcher, I agree with most!
Anybody see him "live" this year?
Did he fill out any?
How big does he look next to the other linemen that we have?

I guess we reverse the 8th spot for Jerehmiah Johnson?
Johnson's injured. I think they'll look for someone who is ready to go on the field. Nixon will likely go to the PS when Cushing comes off suspension.

I thought we'd find a spot on the active roster for Greenhouse because he was such a stud on ST.
Greenhouse had 2 tackles and one assist on special teams this preseason. This earns a roster spot and stud status? Am I missing something?

Come on Lucky, you know its not all about the stat sheet. He was constantly down around the action, and more than once I saw him blow up the new mini-wedge that is allowed.

I didn't know the numbers were that low. I just always noticed him around the ball when we were on special teams.

The Texans have put together a good-looking group of PS players, a couple of them should've/could've made the roster, but patience is no-doubt a virtue, these players will benifit from this by getting stronger, faster, bigger and a better grasp of what the Texans do, my favorite has always been Malcolm Sheppard, i think he came the closest to making this team and will most-likely crack the roster before seasons end, Greenhouse and B.Williams are my other favorites, i don't remember Bobby Williams dropping any balls thrown his way.

Bobby Williams had a great camp. He came out of nowhere and made me know his name, a real feat for a UDFA on a team loaded at WR.

Sheppard could be one of the steals of the offseason if he continues to progress.

Torri Williams had a solid camp also, he just keep making plays, not sure he has the speed to play, but he deserve a PS place to prove himself.

I also like the signing of Chris Ogbonnaya.

This is a solid PS top to bottom.

He didn't help himself with the holding calls on ST.

I have to agree with you newtexan. Out of the 7 players on the PS thus far, I see 2 (Malcolm Shepperd, Isaiah Greenhouse) who should make the squad next year, and another 2 (Bobby Williams, Cole Pemberton) who will compete in camp.

The future looks good with these guys.

we might want to use hush tones on this one since another team could at any time sign a player off our practice squad & add him to their roster. FYI :worldpeace:

Yeah.

All these guys TOTALLY suck. No one wants to have anything to do with these guys.

These aren't the droids... er... I mean, players, you're looking for.

Move along.

Greenhouse did look good on ST, no doubt.

Still haven't filled the eighth spot on the squad... I wonder what's cooking? We now know it won't be a QB, and with Oggy on there, it's not going to be a RB.

Of course I HOPE that it's Jesse Nading for when we sign Schobel, but that's now looking very unlikely unless the Texans really pony up some cash. According to Lance Zierlein, the Texans are about $2 million short of Schobel's asking price.

I guess the Leinart signing takes Booty off the list for the 8th PS position.

So, who is the likely candidate now?

Booty is still the likely guy, IMO, until Leinart learns the offense he is usless. Arizona runs a completely different offense, he ran a version of the WCO in college, so that may shorten the learning curve.

He didn't help himself with the holding calls on ST.

That is a coaching issue, obviously he was doing something that the refs did not like, should be correctable in one session of film with Coach Joe.

He keep flashing in the red zone drills on the last day of open practices. That may be because quickness is more important than speed when the field is compressed.

If it was going to be Booty, he'd already be there. There's been plenty of time.

My hope is that if Leinart takes to the offense quickly enough, they just cut bait with Orlovsky now rather than waiting and holding his hand next year through preseason too.

Are there some sort of rules in place about when you release an injured player and then having to wait some specified time before you can put him on the PS? If so, I think that spot is for Johnson.

Yes, there are rules - and the time has long passed. If Johnson or Booty was going to be the #8 guy, it would have happened by now (unless they are still considering other options and ultimately decide they want one of those two instead).

But - we now have three QBs on the roster, why would we want a fourth on the PS? Plus, we already have a RB on the Psquad, and there's no way they're going to have two on there at the same time. What will probably happen, is that once Johnson is healed up and ready to go - he'll probably hit the psquad and we'll release Oggy.

I was surprised by the Oggy pickup. Did he flash something in preseason better than Jeremiah?

I've got to go back and watch his preseason carries.

I don't know. I liked Oggy as a late-round possibility for the Texans in the 2009 draft, but I have no idea how he's looked since becoming a pro.

I doubt he flashed too much more than Johnson, but the only reason Johnson didn't hit the Psquad is because of his injured toe. We also have to keep in mind that running is only one phase of the game, and Johnson (switching on Kubiakspeak) has a long, long way to go in his QB protection, blocking, blitz pick-up, etc.

Chris Brown only played so much last year because he is a good blocker... Texans backs HAVE to be able to block to get significant playing time.

I looked up Oggys' preseason stats... and they're pretty terrible. 1.9 yards per carry. I don't understand picking up this guy of all the guys available out there.

Or cut Orlovsky after the 4th game to make room for Cush. I guess it depends on how quickly Leinart picks up our offense.

1st I think you hit it on the head with Booty looking at his options.

Why would they think about Booty on the PS? Because they will not cut Orlovsky until Leinart understands the playbook. Once Leinart can win the backup role, they cut Orlovsky IMO. And then they need a 3rd guy in camp.

If Schaub was to go down now, Orlovsky would be playing and Booty knows more of the playbook than Leinart. So it makes some sense to me.
