2010 Houston Texan's Depth Chart

Here is a link to the Texan's post-preseason 2010 Depth Chart. I presume this lineup is not likely to change again prior to opening day, barring a free agent pickup. This is our Houston Texan's team for 2010.

http://www.houstontexans.com/team/depthchart.asp

A few items that were noteworthy include Wade Smith and Antoine Caldwell being listed as the starters at the two guard positions, and Dorin Dickerson apparently being listed ahead of David Anderson in the WR rotation.

Also, with the addition of Derrick Ward as the third string running back, it seems very possible that the Texans are ready to go with this lineup and could well forgo any additional free agent activity prior to the start of the season. However, I only count 52 players on this depth chart, so they do appear to have room to add one more.

I think that depth chart reflects that Dickerson plays the exact position the Andre does more than order we will see them in the game. Anderson is really a slot guy whether the Texans are in 3 or 4 WRs.

Man, is this team young, or what?

Not including the kickers, Danny Clark appears to be the oldest player on the team at 33. Kevin Bentley and Eugene Wilson are both 30. Other than those three guys (and the kickers), it does not appear there are any other players on this team that have hit the big 30.

I used ESPN's roster for the Texans for the ages of the players:

Young, Young, Young! (And I don't mean Vince Young)

You are probably right. But I will not be shocked if Dorin Dickerson gets more playing time this year than David Anderson does.

Derrick Ward turned 30 this past Tuesday.

Could we please cut Kasey Studdard and Domonique Barber both of whom sucked in the preseason. It shouldn't be hard to find some guys on the waiver wire to fill their positions. It seems that this is the year that Kubiak isn't afraid to cut some dead weight and or make some changes and shake things up a bit. Both of these guys suck and some change would be nice.

I do not believe there is anyone on this depth chart who sucks. Obviously, not everyone on this team has what it takes to be a pro bowler. But this is a capable, solid group of guys from top to bottom.

This team has really come quite a long way since 2006.

I just don't know how Jesse Nading makes this team. I don't know how he would make the detriot lions either...rams maybe....

...but a guy like Jeremiah Johnson doesn't. Sheppard doesn't, despite obvious woes at DT. Frank Okam made it, I mean occasionally he blows open the OL....but it's like OCCASIONALLY...Jon weeks has a roster spot sooooo I better not see a single messed up snap for a kicker.

Jacques Reeves is a good cut, Andre Davis as well. Looks like Xman Adibi is the starter in place of Cushing. If they signed up Schobel now I might cry, I think the team could use that "one more guy to push us over the top" signing.

He'll probably get as much playing time as Andre Davis got as AJ's primary back-up. Hopefully that means nil.

This is what I was thinking. Anderson has established his role in the offense. Dickerson is just big and fast at the moment.

Big and fast with good concentration and the ability to make amazing one hand catches.

Sounds almost like the second coming of Andre Johnson. I hope that is right. We should be so lucky.

Might need to slow down a bit..well really a whole lot.

Maybe I need to go back and look at the pre-season games again, but dude looked a really big and fast guy who made 1 great catch, but overall looked like a athletic guy trying to figure it out. We would be lucky if his career is good as Walter or Jacoby. If turns into another Andre Johnson that is winning the Powerball, not just norm good furtune.

Johnson is hurt and out for 6 weeks, they are gambling that a team will not sign him for a roster spot because he can not play. They plan on signing him to the PS and then activating him when he is healthy.

Had he not dislocated his toe he would be on this team.

I'm not saying that Dorin Dickerson is the next Andre Johnson or that he'll be taking Jacoby Jones' spot this year or anything. He's just got a lot of potential. He showed really good concentration in making that 1 handed catch. He also ran the end around pretty well and he's made some other decent plays this preseason.

With some work, he could turn out to be something special but he's not there, yet.

Dorin is very talented, but needs a couple of yrs to put it together as far as playin WR in the NFL. had at least 2 balls he shoulda caught going over the middle this past game, being more consistant every down comes with experience obviously. i think he can do it if he wants to, barring off field issues we arent aware of, i dont think it will take near as long to develop him compared to Jacoby.

That's where the bar is set. Everytime Kubiak speaks of him, he compares him to Andre. His size, his weight, his speed, his strength. He's been doing that since the draft. Kubiak has high expectations for him.

I think Dickenson will prove the be the steal of the draft, in a sense a lot like Foster. Very good players can and do come from the very low rounds.

ESPN's analysis of our cuts

While they put Kris Brown and Andre Davis on IR and Anthony Hill on PUP, they did not announce Brian Cushing is on the suspended-reserve list. So they might still be in line to gain one roster spot.

I wonder why they haven't put Cush on the suspended reserve list, yet? Seems like you'd want to get that out of the way.

Bob McNair is still holding out hope that his "overtrained athlete syndrome" argument will work on Goodell. Roethlisberger had his suspension reduced, maybe Cushing's will just go away. If we let him play next Sunday will they even notice?

We could put him in a #53 jersey and call him Danny Clark.

No one would notice.

GENIUS!

He is comparing them physically and potential style of play, not that he will be exactly Andre Johnson in pure production.

Needs to develop consistency. He wiffs on two catchable balls then makes a highlight reel catch. Kid does have potential but needs seasoning.

Long snapping is very, very important.

We're going to field a team of long snappers.

First post I know (I lurk), but just for everyone's information:

Only one of those is a true long snapper (Jon Weeks) (I'm sure most if all of you know that), but did you know that only 2 or 3 teams in the entire NFL DO NOT have a dedicated long snapper? Don't get why everyone is so shocked to see one on the roster and all the 53 man predictions never included one. Texans consistently had one until their man decided he needed to get banned for 4 games.

Thanks for coming out of the dark!

I agree. The kicker, holder, and snapper should be on an unused corner of the field during practice, working on their timing. No need to involve a player like Dreeseen or Casey, who should be working with the offense.

Welcome to the group, and yeah, we were just joking.

This coaching staff has been very high on getting maximum production out of their players. They try not to dedicate spots to a single position like that if the player can possibly play another spot. That's why they pumped Dreessen and Casey to be the LS last year instead of going with a dedicated one again.

Personally, I was a big defender of keeping Brian Pittman on the roster back in the day. I consider long snapping to be a very important and under appreciated part of the game. OTOH, I thought Dreessen did a pretty admirable job last year but I wonder if doing it contributed to his shoulder injury.

With the centers or guards that can play center, we should not need to designate a spot for a "long snapper."

Dreessen should be the Texans designated long snapper. maybe when Owen proves he's 100% Kubiak/Smith can place Weeks on waivers then pass him to PS since in his rookie year.

I agree with you on Dreesen. Not sure about Weeks going to PS.

Long snapping is a specific skill that the vast majority of 32 teams think that is important enough to designate a specific person to do and primarily/only do.

Now that you have said that explain why one of the guy already on the roster can not deep snap. I had a thread on this a couple years or so ago but no one can convince me a regular center can not deep snap.

I think it primarily because of practice time. The centers and guards need to be working with the OL and backup OL. The long snapper spends a ton of time off with the kickers and punters.

1) consistent quality of the snaps- One or two bad snaps can not just cost you a game but the playoffs. Sure a center can be taught to be okay at it, but when I can get darn good why settle for OK.

2) Injury. If you have a center (or heavily used number 2 TE) is the long-snapper and he gets hurt you now have two jobs to replace. In theory, i am guessing that the back-up center would also be learning long snap, but again you still dealing with a quality issue. The shot gun snap is not the same in terms of exactness of location, the ability have the laces the correct spot, nor speed.

3) Is the roster spot better served with a dedicated player who you know is going to serve a key role in 10-12 plays every game versus a 7th Lber or extra Olmen or 6th WR?
