My take on position battles from last nights game

Let me first say I was not looking to see if we would win, it was more about performances although a win would have been nice. Ok where to start, I guess with the DB's.

Troy Nolan - Looks solid and will definitely start out as our #2 FS and possibly take over the #1 during the season.

Brice McCain - Saw nothing that really stood out, but did nothing to hurt himself, I think he makes the 53 man roster.

Sherrick Mcmannis - Started off a little shakey but got better as the game went on. Will be a coin flip to make roster or clear waivers and be on PS.

Dominique Barber - Looked solid on run support and like a high schooler on coverage. also made a couple bad attempts at tackling. IF he makes the team he will be 3rd string behind Wilson and Nolan.

Jaques Reeves - I cannot believe this guy has not learned how to turn and look for the ball. If I was Kubiak/ Smith this guy has played his last game in a Texan uniform.

Have to run some errands will be back later with my views on OL, DL, LB, RB, QB, TE, and WR.

If Reeves is in the final 53, I'm going to be disappointed.

I'd definitely keep McManis (sp?) over Reeves. That's not necessarily saying a ton about McManis, but it says a lot about Reeves and yet another failed free agent acquisition on the part of Smithiak.

Just because Reeves has lost it a little at this point doesnt mean it was a failed acquisition. He was quite useful for a few years, and at one point, was our most reliable corner. He earned the dollars he's received

Barber will be the backup to Pollard while Nolan is the backup to Wilson.

Disagree. While the contract wasn't as terrible as some they've given, Reeves' best wasn't very good.

Barber just took some really terrible angles last night. I was really upset with his play. I had thought he was starting to get it but after last night, he looks like the guy that was killing us last year.

Better then Bennet and Robinson over the last season or so.

Our CBs scare the piss out of me. Is Quinn legit or Bennett v2? Can Jackson make another step up in ability or is he at his peak? How often and badly will McMannis be targetted if he's on the field? And so on. All in all, I know Reeves will likely not make the interception but I have as much faith in him covering his man as any of the other CBs.

Barber sucked last night. Reeves and McMannis were not much better, but one of them has to make the roster. That scares me a bit.

I wish Reeves would have been better than he has been but I don't see this as "yet another failed FA acquistion by Smithiak". Picking Reeves up that offseason was a necessity and a huge need. It'd be like if Schaub wasn't our QB and we were faced with Orlavsky/Booty as our starting QB. Reeves was the 2nd best CB on the market. I think it says more about what was available than it does about Smithiak.
