Can someone explain how they work?

Trying to look at this from a non-homer position (& you know that's pretty damn hard for me.) But how do these "experts" rank these teams, what criteria is used?

This List has us behind the Bengals, 49ers, & Dolphins. What is even stranger, they have the Bengals behind Baltimore, the Jets, and Atlanta. I'm just not seeing that. The Bengals problem on D was depth, and their offense will be much improved, I would put them right there with the Ravens.

These guys have us a little better, still behind the Bengals & Falcons. There has to be something I'm not seeing.

This one still below the Bengals & Falcons. But also below the Eagles, Cardinals and Giants.

Peter King seems to have gone out on a limb. He has the Packers at #1, the Saints at #5. But he has Miami at #6 (WTF am I missing?) Dallas at #10, Seattle at #11, Atlanta at #16, and Houston at #17.

I'm not really too worried about where we are ranked, I just don't understand how teams like Atlanta & Miami consistently are placed higher than we are. A healthy Ryan, and a healthy Turner may explain Atlanta being ranked higher a time or two, but every time? & I'm just not getting the optomism about Miami, with the Patriots & Jets consistently in the top 10.

It's all just opinion. Guys just rank the teams by how much they like their chances. There's no science or logic to really back it up.

And every week, the rankings change as some teams win and other teams lose.

Bottom line, a lot of pundits don't like that they've picked us to turn the corner for the past couple of years so they're dropping us down because of that.

Personally, I create a power rank listing for my own benefit from time to time to help me with my picks.

Power rankings are just mental masturbation. Something to pass the time until the next weekend gets here during football season. They mean very little and outside of the regular season when meaningful games are being played every weekend they mean even less.

It's something to argue about until everybody has a real record to put by their names.

Fortunately this is the NFL and not College Football. The NFL standings will actually be determined by the outcomes on the field, not some stuff shirt's opinion.
