So, what is your early opinion about Kareem Jackson's play?

I thought he did very well.

If all the guys can do the same things he did (that is to play his role and carry out his assignment, plus a little extra here and there), the outcome of the game would have been totally different.

Besides the coverage that he participated in, I also heard of a play in which the media team from New Orleans saying that Brees wanted to go long, but didn't (can't see the coverage downfield so I'm not in a position to declare what was going down).

KJ also prevented two potential TDs (on the same drive in which the Saints finally scored anyway) with his run defense skill.

What did you see?

I was pleased with what I saw from him, albeit CB is tough to follow on TV. I felt like his run support was not that of a rookies but more of a veterans. There were probably a couple of hiccups in there (I heard the announcer refer to a missed tackle) but I though he stood his ground and took good angles for the most part.

The announcer that said he missed that tackle was not watching that play as he was the one the made that tackle after the dline and lbr's all missed.

If you are referring to the pair from New Orleans, they (well, one of them) couldn't be more wrong about it.

There was one play that KJ had stayed on the outside of Shockey to make sure the RB couldn't go wide before he switfly followed the RB inside (Shockey wasn't able to do anything about it). Wilson made the tackle at any rate.

The NO guy said "if the RB had gone outside, it would have been a sure TD because Shockey had the defender pinned inside."
That guy is terrible, I'm sorry! And he called it on the replay, too, not at first sight!

As a rookie, he prevented Brees from picking on him or going long. That's a good sign.

He also made a spectacular tackle when the ball carrier had made it past the LB's. He flashed in from open field and clipped the runner's legs. Beautiful stop.

I am horribly optimistic about Jackson, I am forever hoping to get a lockdown CB in the draft. I pinned my hopes and dreams on Bennett and Molden, I've invested in Quin and now my heart is with Jackson.

If one of those guys can be THE guy, I'd be the happiest Texans fan in Omaha.

Well since he didn't get any picks you have to kind of judge him on what didn't happen. He didn't get toasted long. He didn't get picked on short. He didn't get an egregious PI called on him. I did like his presence in the run game, and I didn't think he looked very rookie-ish on the field with the other starters.

Unfortunately, the rest of the defense didn't really help out so he wasn't making spectacular plays. He did all the little stuff.

From watching at the game, ( the little bit I can remember), KJ was jamming his man at the line and then pretty much blanketing them down the field. I thought he had a great game. I was pretty much focused on him for as long as I could focus.

being that u didnt hear his name all day is...that in itself says all u need to know about how he played as our #1 corner

if we heard his name that means he was getting toasted all day

Kareem Jackson is a straight up stud...he knows how to run, cover and hit. Anyone that watched the Tide roll the last few years should not be surprised by this guy. It really doesn't hurt that he has to play Andre in practice either. I don't think I'm jumping the gun by saying this guy is going to be our version of Revis. Jackson just happened to be the best corner in the SEC last year and the guy knows how to win because he is a champion. If we can get decent play from the other corner and the Pollard/Nolan/Wilson hold their own....our secondary worries are over, which will help the defensive line even with Okoye in there.

Haven't one of those since Aaron Glenn. Hell, Marcus Coleman was better than anything we've had since and he got moved to safety.

It was hard to tell since NO ran for 198 yards, did NO even throw the ball?

I know my sarcasim is not very contructive, but I couldn't bring myself to rewatch the game to break down tape. I have wiped the NO game from my memory, I'm moving on to Dallas and putting NO down as a mulligan. Barring any disaster while playing for the Governors Cup I plan on watching KJ closely.

Good news ....KJ held up. Bad news ... he wasn't picked on enough to really gauge his skills. If the run game defense wasn't so pathetic we might have had a better idea of his cover skills. Early limited evaluation, he looks pretty good so far.

True that, but KJ showed that he fight off blockers very well to get to the runner.

I like McCain in coverage in certain situations, for example, but I do not enjoyed watching him get washed away and let the runner goes wild for a long gain or a TD.
The same goes for other CBs who we had that were inconsistent in run support last year.

I'm glad to see McMannis improving that part of his game (from his college tapes) even though it's also too early to tell.

I couldn't watch much of the games, but I watched enough to know one thing: Bennett has no place on this team.

By most reports KJ played the run well and looks like the kind of corner the Texans expected in the sense that he'd come up and do a solid job of defensing the rushing game. On the other hand his pass-coverage skills are still unknown because he simply was not tested by Brees & the Saints, in part because they ran the ball at will and there was not much need for Brees to go to the passing-game. Stay tuned for the game Saturday vs Romo & the Cowboys for a more complete answer of KJs skills, especially in pass-coverage.

Awesome, I see you two and several others thought the announcers were off. I'm thinking of the exact same play as you 76, 25 was clearly the one that made the TD saving tackle after several players missed their tackles. I believe it was the very next play KJ did something (good coverage?) and the announcer said he atoned for the play before... or maybe he said the missed tackle earlier.

I'm really excited about Jackson and Quin as our #1 and #2 guys. I think our depth is starting to look better and I only see improvement because Smith will always draft 1 or 2 corners each draft. I love this mentality.

I don't want to get this thread too far off topic and I know it's been discussed in other threads but how have the other top rated Corners from the draft looked so far?

Me too, I think Quin is going to be a stalwart on this D for years. He sticks to his man very well in coverage, always seems to be in position for a deflection or nice tackle and plays with a Pollard-esque demeanor (though he's a little less demonstrative haha).

IF KJ lives up to the hype we'll be set for a good long while at CB. Especially with McCain being a quality cover man, Reeves still has still, Molden still the physical freak and McMannis being probably the best 6th string CB in the league.

Honestly, I've thoroughly enjoyed the mid-round CB every year thing that Smithiak does but the depth is getting pretty thick. Maybe we'll start seeing mid round safeties until the safety position is stacked too?!

I reckon Kris' Mom is in Southlake or somewhere around Dallas. Mother-in-law is in Omaha and the aunt (in-law, that we all know and love) is technically in Iowa.

Everyone on board should know of my reluctance about Jackson and disgust at Smithiak for passing up Kyle Wilson. I still think it was the wrong choice. I am following Jackson closely and he has done NOTHING for me say "see I was correct." He has not been out of position or beat on a long pass that he should have stopped. So far and it is early, he has surprised me hugely. If he continues to grow I am hopeful CB 1 is no longer an issue.

Jackson did just fine for his very first NFL game but keep in mind the Saints did not throw the football his way as often as I exspect Peyton to do. Not hearing his name being called on T.V. was a good sign though. It is not easy to tell because the CB is not always in the play but the early signs are very good with KJ thus far I'm pleased.

I thought Kareem did a good enough Job. I would have liked to see him actually defend a catchable ball though.

He showed good coverage, but I didn't like that fact that he never located the ball on the throw to Marques Colston. I think if the throw is more accurate Colston has a great chance of making that catch. I would have like to see what would have happened if the ball was catchable and colston would have went up for it.

I think part of the reason Kareem never looked for the ball was because he was very focused on the reciever and since the ball was not catchable the reciever never made a move that tipped Jackson off that the ball was near.

...But I do feel good about him being able to stop gashing runs on his side of the field...He was pretty damn good making tackles in the open field. Much better at it than Dunta was.

he looked like he belonged

missed a tackle but so did a lot of peeps
going back and watching the game, I couldn't believe how poor our LBs looked
outside of molden, who looked awful, the secondary wasn't that poor

Jackson should be a solid db for us for a few years
he better be because he is going to be on the field a lot

I hope Kareem Jackson lines up across from Austin on Saturday night since he seems to be the best WR Dallas has. I think we see Romo get picked a few times Saturday night. I will especially be watching Duane Brown / Demarcus Ware matchup.
