Optimistic ?

I'm trying to remain optimistic but can somebody tell me why the Texans will be better than they were last year?

Now that Tate is hurt they will have all of the same RB's that played in last years putrid running game.

The defense should be a little better with the drafting of K.Jackson (Who they say hasn't looked all that great in camp) and getting Wilson back from injury. This progress is off set somewhat by losing Cush for 4 games.

I wont even bring up the debacle that is the K game.

Plus the JV schedule they had last year is not compared to the varsity schedule their going to be facing this year.

I'm will remain a Texan fan through thick and thin. But this year appears to be a little thin on the win side for the Texans. Hopefully guys like Barwin,Mitchell and JJ step up and this will all be a moot point.

I seriously put into question your "optimism" and how you have remained "optimistic" through the last 6 months. In fact I'd say you've been one of the biggest pessimists on this board in that time span.

Improvement in the running game did not and has not hinged on one rookie. Improvement on the defense has not hinged on one rookie. It's player development and staff changes as well as the other players drafted in rounds 3-6. Starting your thread saying that you are trying to remain optimistic gives me a chuckle.

The defense is better. The pass rush will be better, I think, with Barwin developing further, Mitchell providing some push inside (maybe Ok0ye?), and the LBs blitzing. The LB corps looks good, like they're playing more instinctively, and the secondary will benefit from that. Troy Nolan might turn out to be a player, as well.

Offensively, I think the interior line will be slightly better in the run game than it was last year. How much better remains to be seen, but I am cautiously optimistic about that. I'm not as optimistic about the RB position anymore, since Tate went down and Slaton fumbled, but we'll have to see. I am happy about Foster, but he'll need help at some point.

Look, we dont need an all world running game. We just need a middle of the pack at best. Losing Tate hurts, but its not the end of the world. One fumble from Slaton on a goal line carry (he wont be getting those in the real deal) is not the end of the world either. The Slaton of 2008 can still be in there somewhere. We just need to make him our 3rd down guy, screen pass, get in open spaces guy. Thats all. Foster has show he is more than capable in producing tough yards. Heck, he had back to back 100 yard games to end the season and was/is the #1 RB on the depth chart. What has he shown you to think otherwise?

The Texans will be a better team by leaps and bounds this year. The defense will be better because this will be the Cordinators second year and the players will (are) feeling more comfortable. It was obvious Saturday when our first team was out there playing.
Even though Tate went out with an injury, it really dosen't bother me that much. I feel comfortable with Foster back there, and the rest competing for the second spot.
I think our O-Line is gonna be better, just for the fact they all got injured last year.
Shaub has proved himself last year. (atleast to me) It's just a matter of staying healty.
Don't forget that 70% of the world is covered with water, the other 30% is covered by pollard and cushing. (stole that from someone talking about Troy P.) Im excited about every facet of our game this year, and I think everyone will be excited after we watch the Texans beat the Colt's in the opener.

I don't think you can view improvement solely based on new additions to the starting lineup. This team underwent an identity change defensively last season and I believe they have taken it a step further on both sides of the ball this offseason. We have always had stars on both sides of the field but I really trust our "role" players this year. Kyle Shanahan was a talented coordinator for us but Dennison is going to be Frank Bush on offense. Schaub is going to use that Pro Bowl MVP as a catalyst for an even better season.

Yes, the schedule is more difficult but this team is going to be a handful and a half after seeing the intensity of the 1s and 2s the other day.

Having said that I still have a tough time seeing us win in week 1 so I won't be jumping off the bandwagon if we lose another heartbreaker. In fact, I might have to just watch that game on tape delay after hearing if we won or lost, my house can't take the abuse I dole out when I watch us play the Colts.

Great it must be wonderful to be able to judge my feelings. I'm opimistic that the Texans will be a better team. But their record might not show it.

Losing Cushing for 4 games and Tate for the season is going to hurt.

Hopefully Barwin will help improve the pass rush this year and Foster will be a bell cow for the running game. Sorry that I ? the Texans and what they are doing. Injuries are going to go along way to deciding how the Texans season turns out.

After watching the 1's and 2's toy with Arizona this weekend I'm even more optimistic. 10 wins is my prediction for this team.

I'm trying to remain optimistic Really? I can't decide which I find more "questionable", that you believe your optimistic, or that you're trying to convince us you are attempting to stay that way. but can somebody tell me why the Texans will be better than they were last year?

Now that Tate is hurt they will have all of the same RB's that played in last years putrid running game. Well, except that they don't have Moats and C. Brown, and they do have Johnson and Henry. Except that depending on how you want to look at it, Foster has either grown into a better pro, or Kubiak has wised up in his evaluation of talent, and as a result, a guy that got 1 start last year and only had carries in four games (all of which we won btw) will be the workhorse out of that RB group that's the same as last year. That group of the same RB's that played in last years putrid running game includes two players who were active for 0 games, one player that was active for 6 games, and one player that was active for 11 games.

The defense should be a little better with the drafting of K.Jackson (Who they say hasn't looked all that great in camp) and getting Wilson back from injury. This progress is off set somewhat by losing Cush for 4 games. Don't forget that we also used a 3rd rounder to shore up the interior D-Line, we have a 2nd round draft pick who's relatively new to the position, and shows reason for optimism of growth, that between a currently healthy Eugene Wilson, and a now healthy Troy Nolan, we should see better play at one safety position, and we'll have Pollard available for all 16 games this year at the other safety position. We also saw Antonio Smith become much more of a factor in the second half of last year, so we can hope that was a result of gaining familiarity and comfort with the system, and not just being a slow starter.

I wont even bring up the debacle that is the K game. With the bar set so low, it will not be hard to see an improvement in this area in 2010 (Sorry, that's the best I could do. Kickers are such weird animals to begin with, how can anybody pretend to know what's going to happen here).

Plus the JV schedule they had last year is not compared to the varsity schedule their going to be facing this year. We'll see how it plays out. Last year when we played Tennessee the first time, we were playing one sorry-ass team (we just didn't know it). When we played them the second time, we were seeing one of the hottest teams in the league (we didn't know that either). Scheduling is what is it.

I'm will remain a Texan fan through thick and thin. Fan I will not argue with, but let's drop the optimistic thing. But this year appears to be a little thin on the win side for the Texans. See! Hopefully guys like Barwin,Mitchell and JJ step up and this will all be a moot point. And as a true fan, I trust you are 100% sincere in that hope!!

Okay then!

This is true o any team not just the Texans. We all should know how an injury can change the face of any team if that injury is at a certain position. Look how much worse the Colt's defense is when Bob Sanders is not on the field.

That being said, I don't know that I am optimistic. It's hard to be when your team has never done anything. I obviously want then to improve but I just have that "thing" at the back of my brain telling me to doubt the team and their ability to improve on last season.

Saturday night helped some but not much because I know how terrible Leinart is. But the 1's played as well as I hoped they would. Tate's injury concerns me less simply because he was not even running with the 1's but that doesnt make a season ending injury to a top pick suck any less. And Foster seems to have firmly planted himself as the starter.

Anyway I think my doubts are coming from a different place than yours but they are still doubts so put me in the "Cautious Club" for now.

Of the teams in our division, I think the Texans have shown slow and steady improvement overall. Losing Cush hurts in the beginning, but I believe they will be 5-2 going into the bye week. Arian Foster is going to be a difference I think, as will the d-line.

I'm more optimistic than I have been in a long time. I think our offense is going to be a high scoring offense for sure. We have to many weapons for it not to be. The defense will have to take care of theirs though, and I think we can improve a little off of last season. My biggest worry is Gary Kubiak, but with as much talent he has this year to work with, I think he should be able to get us into the playoffs and I feel more confident about that now more than ever before.

Reasons this Texans team could be better than last year's Texans team?

Change in coaching staff (i.e. Dennison, Knapp)
Development of current staff (i.e. Kubiak, Bush)
Development in players (i.e. Foster, Nolan, Mario, Barwin)
New players (i.e. Jackson, Mitchell)
Developed "winning culture"
Good luck (versus bad)
Youth of the team (re: no reason to expect a step back in production, rather, reason to expect a step forward)

It's not to say any or all of these things happen. But, to act as if this team is devoid of hope because they lost their (at the time) third string RB is disingenuous.

There's plenty of reason to believe this team will be better than last year's team. You just don't.

I'll get back with yall after I watch our 1st stringers play the 1st stringers from New Orleans and Dallas in the next two weeks. Those two teams will give us a better idea of where we are than Arizona.

Even with that said, I'm optimistic about this year. We'll know soon enough.

Only time will tell, I definitely think *IF* we make it into the playoffs with this schedule we could make it very deep into the playoffs... I'm really worried about our schedule, as it's just brutal. It could be another 8-8/9-7 year and that just doesn't get it done in the AFC.

We need at least to be 10-6/11-5 and control our destiny, but again man our schedule is BRUTAL.. Honestly I think we have a VERY good season to get to 10-6/11-5, if we had the same schedule as last year I'd shoe us in to the playoffs..

I hate to say it but I think the Texans have a great chance to make noise and win it all. I say that from a talent standpoint. The issues that come into play are coaching, secondary and injuries. To make it far you have to get some breaks, stay relatively healthy and get on a late roll. I don't see any reason why they shouldn't win enough games to make it to the dance. As a Cowboy fan who has been here for years I've always kind of thought they weren't ready to make it. Now not only do I think they have the talent to make it but I think they could be better than the Cowboys. Shocking :). I think they are both talented teams and it will come down to a few factors...Cowboys O-line, Texans finishing games/taking next step. Considering I've never been optimistic about a full season it isn't like I'm trying to blow sunshine here.

well after thinking about this

other then At the jets

and at Tenn

and maybe vs The Ravens on MNF

i think we can beat every team on our sechudle i just got this huntch that we are going to sweep the colts we will flat out kick there ass on wk 1 at our house and sweek through a tough one at there house

so if we can at least win 1 outta teh jets ravens and titans i think we can be like a 12 win team win the crown and first round bye

hopefully wont play the colts in the playoffs in the DIV round and play some punk ass team like the chargers ravens or Pats and we can beat them why not

make it to the AFC title game and hopefully not play the colts beat that team

be that cindrella team this year make it to dallas run outta gas and lose the SB

i think if we make it to teh tourment has long has we have Schaub to AJ we got a chance

thats kinda how i see it play out

I think the second year in Frank Bush's defense is going to be the biggest reason for imporvement on defense. Losing Cush is going to hurt, but I don't think we'll lose games because of it.

Offensively, I think we were gelling at the end of last year. If Studdard & Caldwell get the start, there will be running lanes to run in. Foster has shown the ability to take advantage of them, I still think Slaton has a lot to offer, & I'm high on Chris Henry & Jeremiah Johnson.

We've just got too much talent, and too much scheme on both sides of the ball not to do well even against this schedule.

If Owen Daniels can get in the game, all the better.

Bush , talent , Dennison , Foster are reasons I think they'll be better . Besides it's not like I'm a farmer wishing and waiting on the rain just to survive . I'll be optimistic because if I'm wrong , oh well .
