Motivators On This Team..

Do we have any motivators with great charisma at the top coaching positions? I'm talking about guys like Bush, Dennison, and especially our HC, Kubiak.

Are these coaches the type of coaches that can give a overwhelming speech before a game that will get players to play at the highest potential, to overachieve past their limits for 60 minutes on gameday. A coach that can give a post-game speech to uplift the team's spirits when they lost a heart-breaker and get them to go into practice on Monday/Tuesday and bust their tails to prepare for the next game and come out victorious?

I just watch an the intro to ESPN's "NFL Films" featuring the 2009 Balt. Ravens. In that scene, John Harbaurgh was giving a speech, using the props of sword and shovel. I was zoning in and out due to me being overcame by hunger and trying to make some food, but I think the shovel indicates burying the past season and sword going into battle of the new season.

I completely tensed up while watching this speech sequence given by Coach Harbuargh. How he got his entire team undivided attention as he held the sword and shovel above the head and how the entire locker room erupted with excitement and intensity as Coach slashed the sword forward and the team began to set off towards the field.

I wish I could elaborate on Coach Harbarugh's speech, but like I said I was suffering through immense hunger and didn't pay attention until the end of the scene.

Now, this got me thinking, how does Kubiak deliver a speech in the Texan's locker room? Well, I look around NFL Videos and Texans TV and could only find one video of his giving a speech, and that was after the Pats game. The first thing that came to mind was. Hank Hill. Just because the way he talks and his accent. I did like how he gave the game ball to McNair(and coincidentally given a contract extension weeks later. :kitten:)
; however, the way the team reacted to it was amazing and gave me a warm feeling inside :hurrah:.

But, his speech was a bit underwhelming, he talked to the players as if he's one of them and not a higher authority, i,e being the head coach of the team. I know these guys are all adults, but the head coach is suppose to be the commander when certain situations requires them to. Like giving a locker room speech.

Come to think of it, I never really seen Kubiak display too much emotion, in the locker room, nor on the sidelines. The only one that comes too mind was, I believe, the OD fumble against CAR 07. The question is, how much is Kubiak or the rest of our coaches bringing out of our players. Would it be a greater effort from our players on gameday if they were given a General Patton-esque battle speech?

BTW, this is not a Kubiak-hate post/thread. I actually like Kubiak and wants him to succeed; and I still remember his post-conference when he first arrived to Houston as their new HC. When he said I want to bring a NFL championship home to Houston, I truly knew he meant it will do everything he cans to achieve it.


EDIT: The Sword and Shovel speech was after they made the playoffs, going into their game against the Pats. My mistake. Here's an article that gave more insight into it; wish I could find a video to share though.

From everyone I've heard from who've heard Kubiak speak, they've all said they'd run through a wall for him. I've heard that he's got a ton of fire and passion for the game and if you watch him on the sidelines, I think it's pretty obvious. He's not just standing there passively. He's active and vocal.

Now... personally... I don't think rah-rah charisma is important or even a good thing. The least rah-rah motivational coach of all time was Chuck Noll and he turned out pretty good.

I know a lot of guys like motivational coaches and don't think a coach without obvious "fire" can get their guys to play to a superior level and I know a lot of guys think that Kubiak is laid back. However, like I said, Noll did a pretty good job getting his team to play at a superior level and I don't think Kubiak is a laid back guy.

Personally, if I was a football player and some coach started up some big obvious motivational speech with props and gimmicks and things, I'd be totally turned off. I would tune him out. I personally believe that you go out and you do your job to the best of your ability. You don't waste your emotion in the locker room. You've got to learn to turn your psych on and off.

But, that's just me.
 
Totally agree TPN. People also used to say that Tom Landry was too stoic. And that Bum Phillips was too nice. Bill Walsh did not come across as being very emotional on the field.

I am not comparing Kubiak to any of those coaches, but comparing fans.
 
Coach Mike Singletary can show his ass ..that is nothing .Texans have a secret weapon .. right Bill?

When players line up to publicly support a coach in turmoil, it could also mean they like the fact that he protects them from scrutiny and criticism instead of calling them out for their underachievement.

I don't think this is the case with the Texans, but that is another explanation for that kind of support.

Oh, I don't think so, my friend. Context.

1) They lined up behind him when the season was almost over and his butt was in a sling. I couldn't beleve Mario saying, in like, week 13 or so, that he loved Kubiak. Really? Since when? You could have fooled me!

2) I think their lining up behind him had a lot to do with their fear of a real coaching staff coming in and getting tough and sticking their foots in their behinds.

I'm getting really tired of the players "lining up behind" Kubiak when week 12 rolls around. If you love your coach so much, back it up with Day One.

That is how his speaches are to me. I think he gives great talks. He speaks from his heart and with great passion.

We had Jerry Glanville here to give rah-rah speech, that kind of coach loses guys like Bruce Matthews and are not the best kind of guy to coach in today's NFL. We don't need a side show, just wins.

This team is position to go on a long run with it's talent. As I've been saying for a few years, patience.
 
Kubiak motivational style reminds me of what I've heard about
Bill Walsh. To the public eye, Bill was mild mannered, and
grandfatherly. Some of his players stated that behind
closed doors, Bill would cuss them ups one side and
down the other, to bring them back into focus.

I've made several GIF's of Kubiak cussin his head
off on the sidelines. You guys who go to the
practices should see how he's been riding
Ben Tate all week, then later on camera
he's all "awe shucks" Kubiak again.

Exactly right and who cares if he is awe shucks in press conferences that mean crap to the team's performance. On the sidelines he cusses and chews butt. Frankly his cussing is pretty darn easy to lip read a lot of times like in the NE game when JJ tipped the ball that got intercepted and taken to the house. By reputation he does in the locker room as well. houstonspartan's theory that the players just want a soft coach doesn't fit with the facts like Sage asking Kubiak not to be so hard on him.
 
I agree, I've seen Kubiak flip his lid more often than not. The dude goes berserk on referees all the time. Heck, just the other day he pulled the entire team together and begin rippin them a new one.

Now, the way he runs camp might be a different story. His camps have looked fairly tame, comparatively speaking. There are teams knockin piss out of each other in camps. Also, I know it's Hard Knocks and they might not do it all the time, but the way the Jets were going at it got me kinda fired up last night.

*BTW, they were in helmets only this morning.........again
 
I've heard NFL veterans say the raw raw speeches at the professional level are more often than not perceived as corny and cliche. The best speech-giving NFL coaches are the ones that keep it simple and quiet. Tony Dungy, Bill Belichick those guys would just say do your job and be a professional. And their teams dominated the 2000's.

Pete Carroll was run out of the NFL years ago because his raw raw attitude wasn't well received by players. Marty Schottenheimer is one of the best motivational speaking coaches ever, look at his playoff history. Corny Disney movie speeches to players are great entertainment on Hard Knocks HBO but it doesn't make a coach a WINNING coach.

I wasn't talking about motivational speeches but the actual coaching and game day. Some folks think Kubiak is pablum based off his news interviews but that is not what I have heard or seen on the sidelines in interaction with the players.

I personally have no problem with Kubiak's "aw, shucks" facade when he's talking to the media. "Aw, shucks" doesn't mean "I'm a stupid, inbred hick." That just means "I'm an Aggie"... wait... but that does mean "I'm a stupid, inbred hick."

Anyway, I don't mind how Kubiak acts. I don't much care how he acts. He's an intelligent guy. He's a fiery guy with a temper but he hides that when he gets up in front of people.

I don't mind that he calls the players "kids" and I know that irritates some people but... hell... I call the players "kids", too. I mean, I'm old enough to be most of their fathers and if I'm old enough to be your father, you're a kid. Deal with it.
 
I've never really understood the "Dennys menu" stuff either. Dang near every coach in the league has a playlist they use on that particular game day.

I'm not a Kubiak Sunshine Club guy (or what ever it may be). I understand he's far from perfect, but raggin about meaningless mumbo-jumbo is worthless, imo.

Exactly. Pick on something specific and meaningful rather than something that every other coach in the league does as well.

But Kubiak is alright by me (even though I don't belong in the sunshine club either).

He was learning as a HC the whole time, and he's getting better at it, IMHO.

I think that full blown contact and hitting mostly helps the linemen...

But I don't think it's something that makes or breaks how a team comes out in their first game...

If you think about it, they do have 4 (some have 3) pre-season games to get acclimated to full contact practices...Plus they have some scrimmages against other teams...

I would imagine that there are a lot of successful teams that take the same approach that the Texans take...like the Colts...I could be completely off, but I can't see them constantly wearing pads banging each other up...

I just don't know that banging each other in camp gets you any more ready than banging on other teams in scrimmages or full blown pre-season games...
