Andre Johnson new deal

TexasBoY25

Part-time Texan
via John McClain Twitter

WR Andre Johnson is close to signing a new deal that could make him the highest-paid player at his position.

Well done Texans and well deserved Andre. Now, let's go out there and win a Super Bowl or two.

Assuming it all comes down as indicated, it will be interesting to see how it's structured, given the uncapped year, and uncertainty regarding what the future will hold CBA-wise.

Glad Andre is gonna be happy, hope this doesn't cause trouble in the future though.

What, you mean if Fitz gets a new deal making him the highest, we have to redo AJ's deal? Ha, I'm kidding!

In all seriousness, good point.

Found on the desk of Rick Smith:

To Do List:
  1. Redo Andre Johnson Deal - DONE
  2. Sign Aaron Schobel
  3. Championship!

Texans and Andre Johnson near a new deal!

According to John McClain’s tweet a few minutes ago, the Texans are about to sign Andre Johnson to a new contract which would make him the NFL’s highest paid WR. We knew this was coming but I’m curious about the timing because I am still focused on the likely Aaron Schobel acquisition. If the Texans have agreed/agree to a new deal with AJ tonight or tomorrow, it bolsters my belief that they are about to sign Schobel for two reasons:

Good news!!! DAMN, makes me even more excited for this friggin season to get going!!!!!

Think I just might have to go to Ariz, just to get my TEXAN fix!!!

Is Brandon Marshall’s 5 yr $50 million ($24 million guaranteed) the current highest paid receiver?

No Fitz has the best deal. His is 4 years 40 mil with 30 guaranteed. Marshall's is 5 years 47.3 mil with only 12.5 guaranteed. A lot of this is becoming about guaranteed money.

Good news. Highest paid WR.... Are we looking at around 5 year 50mil, more than 30m guaranteed? Whatever deal AJ gets he deserves every penny.

Go AJ!!!
Go Texans!!!

Thanks. I never EVER get tired of watching both of those. Simply incredible.

Really excited with this. I know Andre agreed to the original contract, but this is a special situation. This is ANDRE FREAKING JOHNSON and the MAN deserves this. He will likely be the first Texans Hall of Famer and this move solidifies that AJ will probably remain a Texan his entire career.

Now let's get Schobel signed.

Fantastic plays by AJ but Schaub should get at least a pat on the back. On the Arizona play Schaub hangs in there to get two sided crushed while throwing a perfectly placed pass. On the Tacks play Schaub hangs that ball arguably a tad far but certainly where nobody but AJ would get it. Cris Carter was just talking about that recently with some comments on how a good QB will learn to play to the strengths of the WR. He was using Moss as an example of someone the QB could just throw a jump ball to and figure he would come down with it.

Here is a great QB & WR trust and execution play as well.

Link - definition of perfectly thrown ball.

I think I have the one youtube video highlight reel of AJohnson setup so that the video automatically link every time I type his name on our blog. Barrett and I catch ourselves watching it a lot. Anyway, it's certainly interesting to see the difference in passes thrown by the 1st #8 and the current #8, isn't it?!

Every pro should look at how AJ handled this deal. Say your comment and then keep chopping wood because the deal you want will come to you.

BTW anyone else besides me who were a tad bit displeased that our only FA signing was Wade Smith pretty happy we didn't throw ridiculous money at a CB? Now we make Andre happy and most likely a Texan for the rest of his career and hopefully we can sign Aaron Schoebel.

My earliest criticism about Matt Schaub, was that he was not a play-maker. His first couple of years here, if the play wasn't there, there was no play. Last year, I think he did an excellent job, of making things happen. Whether that meant hanging in the pocket a tad longer, putting the ball in the right place, or recognizing obvious mismatches, or blown coverages.

2007 & 2008, it was also true that if he broke from the pocket (on a broken play), he was going to throw the ball away. 2009, more times than not, he made things happen when things didn't go as planned.

Dude, that pass to Jacoby was a thing a beauty. This is one of the things (that pass/Schaub's accuracy) I covered in a post I made after re-watching the Pats game on NFL replay. Schaub's accuracy was so impressive in that game. Perfect example. And that vid was shot by a fan? That's very cool.

Also during 2007 & 2008, I was baffled by how few fans recognized the
change in gameplan when Sage was in the game, as opposed to
Schaub.

When Sage was in the game, there was NO threat on the defense
getting burned deep. Sage could only throw reliably within a 15-yard
range. Our WR's basically became runningbacks. It was an effective,
yet boring way to move the ball. With Schaub in the game, the ENTIRE
ROUTE TREE is available to crush a defense.

Dre took one for the team, when he took a pay cut to bring Matt here.
Now, they've launched each other into All Pro status. Nice Job, Bob.
You finally spent huge dollars on someone that matters.

Another play from that game that displayed his accuracy and what TK is talking about was one where he flushed to the left and looked like there was absolutely no play and he stuck the ball into Walter on the opposite side of the CB that was blanketed on Walter.

This is a stat I did not know

The third overall pick in the 2003 draft out of Miami (Fla.), Johnson has averaged 77.9 receiving yards per game in his seven seasons with the Texans. That’s the highest mark in NFL history among players with at least 100 games played.

Done deal according to Mark Berman:

Houston - The Houston Texans will announce in a Thursday afternoon news conference that they have signed All-Pro wide receiver Andre Johnson to a new contract. It's expected the deal will make him the highest paid reciver in the NFL and it's news that was reported first on myfoxhouston.com.

While the Texans organization didn't officially confirm the story after Thursday morning's workout, head coach Gary Kubiak erased whatever mystery might have existed.

"It's a great thing for this organization, for a great person and a helluva player," Kubiak said. "I've been doing this a long time and he's what's this game is all about.

"For him to stay the course with this organization through some tough, tough times says a lot about what Houston means to him and what this franchise means to him. So, well deserved and great job by (Texans general manager) Rick (Smith) and (Texans owner) Bob McNair for getting it all worked out."

Johnson led the NFL in receiving yardage the past two years and is only the second player in NFL history to have back-to-back 1500 yard seasons. those are two of the reasons he is expected to be the highest paid at his position.

"He should be," Kubiak said. "For the last two years nobody has played at the level this young man has played at that I've been around, other than one other guy."

"What he's been doing has been special and to me there's a lot more to come."

I wonder how much it is. And I still wonder what will happen 3-4 years down the road, if he will get unhappy again.

Regardless, he is the best receiver in the game. I am glad he is staying a Texan.

I think the Fitz got a 4 year 40 million deal. So, more than that with maybe 35 in guaranteed money.

This can't be right. Where's the pouting? The prima donna TV appearances? The lengthy hold out? The workouts in the driveway? I don't think AJ or the Texans know how this game is played.

Thank God!!

They need to do some fact checking, I think.

Jerry Rice played 108 games in his first seven seasons, and amassed 9072 yards. That's 84 yards per game. He may be the only guy to surpass AJ, or maybe he isn't. I only checked the most obvious, glaring error.

He also scored 93 TDs in his first seven years.

The best thing about this whole contract deal with AJ, is that you know that once he gets his big "payday", he isn't going to turn into Albert Haynesworth. AJ does not have that type of personality to be a slouch and he will only continue to work harder and be the G.O.A.T. I am not worried about him at all.

I think they're talking about career - not after seven seasons (that just happens to be how many seasons AJ's played so far).

Rice finished with 303 games and 22,895 yards receiving, or 75.6 yds per game.

Ahh. Well, if that's the case, it's pretty silly and irrelevant, IMO.

Wow, AJ has graduated from "kid" to "young man" in Kube's book.

High praise indeed. :kingkong:

Your numbers for Jerry Rice are accurate: 84 yards per game over his first 7 seasons.

Hey man they're paying him for being a great football player, not a great public speaker.

Being that this %$%#&^ dial up connection doesn't do videos will one of you fine posters give an overview.

Coulda ended the press conference right there, 'cause thats all i needed/wanted to hear.

Yep indeed. I still cringe every time I hear that from Gary.

Wonder what the structure of the deal is going to look like. With an uncapped year I'm hoping they'll front load much as they can this year.

Johnson received a two-year extension worth $38.5 million, including $13 million guaranteed.

Counting the 5 yrs and $35 million left on old contract, his deal is worth 7 yrs & $73.5 million – an avg $10.5 million a year.
