EverBank buying the stadium rights for JAX

I'm an Everbank customer, and I have to say, I'll be watching this with interest. Whatever they're paying for the naming rights won't go the full length of the contract, I suspect, and it'll be interesting to see if the ROI is worth it, given the instability of the team.

Naming rights to a stadium doesn't mean jack squat if all 8 regular season games are blacked out. The only sure fire way to keep the Jags in Jacksonville is to put the butts in the seats. The extra $3.3 million/year realistically is nothing. The problem still lies in the millions the team can't generate by tarps/empty seats.

We've seen sports venues outlast their sponsors due to either bankruptcy or merger. Enron for one (To point out the obvious). Also Adelphia (Titans), Bank One (D-Backs), and America West (Suns) to just name a few of the others. Unfortunately, I don't think a 5-year sponsorship in any way shape or form ensures that we won't see a reversal of roles in J'Ville.
