D. Davis

D. Davis looked smooth running behind our O-Line he seemed to have more patience than i remember seeing last year, and he was consistently getting 5 yards or more. We are a good Goal line team and what we saw last night was some experimentation with R. Smith at Full Back. But Davis just looked more confortable and confident last night since we have seen a glimpse and rushing stat predictions for him this season ???

i say 1,432 yrds and 16 tds with a 5.3 rushing average.

Any running back is going to look good if the OL is winning the war in the trenches. That was one drive . . and one drive only.

I agree that was one play and one play only...However I just cant wait to see dd in the regular season. I beleive he will have a good one this year.

no it was one drive, not one play, and i am trying to look at the upside of things, ok D.D we know he is good and what about Morency he looked solid, he just needs to learn that North and South is better than East and West !

Davis can be effective if the zone blocking works & love his ability to make yardage after the catch. goal line situations still bother me :texans:

last year we were pretty succesful on goaline situations. I think R. Smith was something we were testing, and it seems like something that wont work, so maybe morris or baxter should step back in.

morris  yes Norris should have been used. even though it is pre-season I assume there is some mental wars to be waged and one of those should be extending over the goaline in four consecutive running plays. this situation is not a new problem its been present since the Texans inception which includes Davis first two seasons. They could EXPERIMENT with the Smith plan after they had that initial score.

as far as numbers Davis should have plenty, but numbers are not enough anymore the Texans need to focus on winning, which includes more scoring in the Red Zone :texflag:

The goal line situation was terrible in that series, but alot of it was due to the injury to Wiegert. Weary came in and got dominated by the Broncos DLine. On the 4th down play they ran to the right side where Weary and Wade were...big mistake. Weary was on the ground by the time DD got the handoff from Carr. Wade and McKinney did their jobs, but the gaping hole at RG let the Broncos defenders stuff DD in the backfield.

looked to me like all we need to do in that goal line situation is seal off the out side. Lynch made two of those stops from around the end of the line. Either Robaire isn't being patient enough to bull doze the right guy, or DD needs to be a little closer to him (in his hip pocket).
Maybe if Norris is in there, he kicks out and blocks Lynch on that play instead, or maybe he is a little slower through the line giving DD a chance to be in a little closer behind him.
I really don't attribute the problem as much to the line as to the FB or TE (Murphy, I think) on those plays. I recorded the game and watched those plays over again today, and I think Robaire really put some guys on thier backsides, but he was too far out in front of DD, letting guys fill in behind him for the tackle. He may just be a little to impatient to flatten someone...

I had to record it too since I had to attend a wedding that night. Guess we both see different things. Smith sealed off Lynch on the first or second down. Lynch came in hard on Smith, but didn't move him an inch and sort of bounced off him. Smith did an okay job on the 3rd down run to the left side but he was a little too far ahead of DD otherwise he'd have made it in. Watch the 4th down play again and you'll see what I'm talking about with Weary. He gets beat handily.

They ran to the right side on 1st, 3rd, and 4th down. On second, they ran to the left end of the line.

I didn't remember that Wiegert got hurt before the goal line stand, but I guess that was the last time I saw the 1st team in there.

Ummm, really? Seems to me the running game and specifically DD have been one of the more reliable parts of the Texans' redzone offense. How about giving us all the examples where DD couldn't score from 3 or less yards last year vs. the number where he could and how that compares to the league?

Think there was a thread to that effect not more than a week to 10 days ago. The texans have ranked in the top 10 in redzone efficeincy in the past two years. There has been a greater problem getting to the red zone versus scoring TDs once there.

The fascination with putting R. smith in the backfield seems strange to me. Norris has developed into one the top blocking FBs in the league. As a guy who used to run the ball he has a sense of what a RB is thinking when he is blocking versus just being big.

I think Capers wants us the be the 90's Cowboys of goal-line scoring. I guess I could live with that. :tv:

Davis definitely looks good. But he also looked good last year in preseason too, and had a rough beginning of the season. Hopefully, that's not going to happen this year. DD is our guy though, no doubt. :)
