Fox sports. Top 10 overpaid players. Antonio smith??

The CUSH!
Antonio Smith, Texans DE

There was probably no bigger bust in free agency last season than this ex-Cardinals defensive end’s showing with the Houston Texans. Yes, he did manage 4½ sacks for $15.5 million, but shouldn’t his numbers have been greater opposite Mario Williams and with rookie sensation Brian Cushing everywhere? Smith should have fallen into more sacks

He could have had better stats last season but this year with Brian Cushing suspension he will need to step up his game and will be a huge key to us winning the first couple of games with out Cushings.

He started slow (as did the entire defense), but he earned his keep. His numbers didn't reflect his play, and, if anything, Mario fell into sacks because of Smith, and not vice versa.

This is merely an instance of a writer looking at a stat line and saying, "hey 4.5 sacks isn't worth $35M, must be a bust."

Exactly! Lots of tools out there making judgements without knowledge just to fill up some space and do some self promotion.

Comment looks like Smith was paid $15.5 million for one year and that is wrong. However, I do agree that Smith was an initial disappointment. I believe he had a run in with his coach and finally got that straightened out. He really needs to begin the season much better than he did a year ago.

More lazy national sports media coverage of the Texans. They're really not interested enough in this team to do much research.

In this case, he doesn't consider how much of an upgrade Smith was over what we had, what was available in free agency at the time, the lack of interior line pressure, and how much pressure Smith put on O-lines and QB's regardless of sack numbers (which is classically undervalued due to lack of quantification).

Smith did satisfactory last season, though I expect more this season. But my opinion's qualified since I actually watch the games.

Geez, I thought he was pretty much a badass for most of the year. Sure he disappeared once or twice but who didn't besides Cushing?

Yeah, I'd like to see him blow up and grab 8 sacks and 3 fumbles and a pick and 16 defensive touchdowns and MVP of the league and publicly give half his salary back to Mr McNair but I live down here in the real world, where we REALLY watch OUR football.

I don't know **** about the Buffalo Bills. That's why I don't talk about them. I suppose if you paid me though, I would probably drivel on about how much they suck and pick apart the easiest possible statistics to pick apart.

bingo

Wasn't haynesworth a FA signing the same here Smith was? If so, wouldn't HE be the worst FA signing since he signed for a ton more AND is ranked #1 on this list?

poor writing and logic used in the article.

Overall, I would say Smith earned his keep.

But I would rather see consistency rather than feast/famine.

The most consistent D-lineman for the whole year was Mario.

Smith did well consistently late in the season.

Hopefully that means he picks up where he left off.

I am a fan of Smith's game. He didn't show up on the stat sheet like you'd want for his pay grade but he brought an attitude/versatility to the DL that we have not had before. He's also got a high motor, which Kollar loves.

Only thing is he needs to control his aggression a bit better and stop hurting the team with personal foul penalties.

Smith has been worth it, especially after having been with Weaver for those years. If he's not getting sacks, he's getting a lot of pressure on the QB. He also brings a nasty attitude to our D, something we needed more of up front. It's money well spent.

That's for dadgum sure! I used to cringe watching him play. He seemed like a great guy, but never had that attitude it really takes to play on the Dline.

BTW, welcome to the board.

I really liked AS. Seemed to me he was getting a lot of unnecessary roughness penalties late in the year...other than that I was fine with him.

who cares. lots of national folks still think dunta was/is a good/great cb. anyone who halfway knows they're looking at could see he was so much better than his stats show

Smith played great most of last year. If we had a DT to take the pressure off of Smith and Mario.....Look out!!!

You guys might give him a pass, but I think 4.5 sacks for what he wad paid wasn't good enough. Period.

So you think sacks are the only things players get paid for?? I do believe that he helped out in our run game, and he did provide some pass rush. He might have had only 4.5 sacks but he also had some hurries which is just as good as a sack is becuase you are forcing the QB to make a throw he really didnt want to make. Overall I would say he had a good year last year. Not great not bad, but good.

If Mario had the same exact year as he did, everyone would be killing him on this site. And for $35 mil, he under achieved. But maybe it isn't his fault Rick paid &im so much for a couple good games in the playoffs for ARI.

He didnt get paid 35 million last year that's his whole contract is worth. You cant look at the 35 million cuase he has not played his whole contract out. Plus Mario was not being moved down to the DT spot on pass rushing downs Antonio while he wasnt the best run stopping player are the best pass rushing player he was a overall good player. IMO he was worth the money we paid him last year.

Why do you think he was moved inside on passing downs? To get sacks DUHHH! Which he got a pathetic 4.5
I don't know from which position Antonio picked up his sacks (anyone?). But, his 4.5 sacks would place him in the top 10 amongst DTs last season.

He was moved inside to provide pass rush up the middle..........and he did that.

But, but....he only had 4.5 pathetic sacks.

Give me the guy who puts consistent heat on a QB and only gets 4.5 sacks over a guy who gets 8 sacks, but gets shut out on every other play.

Sacks aren't the be all, end all stat.

Consistent heat and Antonio smith shouldn't be I'm the same sentence. There isn't an Off. Coordinator in the NFL staying up at night, fame planning days to stop the vicious "consistent heat" of Mr. Smith.

LOL, Smith wasn't signed to be "the guy who offensive coordinators stay up all night trying to stop". LOL, Mario is supposed to be that guy. If Smith was expected to be that type of player then Houston would've had no shot at signing him.....because those players get 100+ million dollar contracts. Smith was signed to be a versatile DLman who can slide inside and give us pass rush help inside on passing downs.

I may be crazy here, but last I checked........he's doing that. The production that he had last season was right there with what he's historically put up in Arizona........you know the same production that made him a sought after FA. If you expected Smith to be a 10 sacks a season guy, well sorry for you...because you're always going to be disappointed. The Texans FO didn't expect that from him and they knew that wasn't the player they were getting.

You pay a premium in FA.......look at the Falcons and Dunta Robinson. What the Texans knew they were paying for was another solid defensive lineman who's versatile and can allow them to do alot of different stuff scheme wise up from. Antonio Smith gave them that and he was also our best defensive lineman during stretches of last season........when could we ever say that about another defensive lineman since Mario has been here?

I thought Smith played pretty good last year especially with them moving him inside and outside as much as they did. He has never been a big time sack artist. I just don't see why he would be on that list because if they pay Okoye $100 a game he is overpaid..lol

When we signed Smith, I posted on this MB that I would be checking on his performance to see if he's going to be worth the money the Texans paid.
(I was concerned that we may be overpaying - maybe not.)

I definitely agree that Smith earned his money.
No, he hasn't earned the whole guaranteed $15.5M for the first year.
But he played well enough to give indication that the whole investment(of 5 years) is worth it.

Did the Texans overpay Antonio Smith? I don't think so. But, let's say they did. Usually, a team has to overpay a quality free agent. On the flip side, the Texans got the biggest free agent steal of 2009 in Bernard Pollard (a street free agent at that). Take that, Fox Sports.

Arguing with this guy seems like a lost cause. Anybody who watched games last year can see that Smith made a big impact despite not having numbers.
