FF Draft Suggestions?

Soooooo, in one of my leagues, I recently got my draft order. It's a CBS 12 team league using normal scoring. All TD's are worth 6, 1 point per 10 rush/rec yd, 1 point per 25 passing yards, etc. No PPR :(

I got the 3rd pick in the draft, and I know that the first two picks will be Chris Johnson followed by Drew Brees.

So who should I take?

I'm leaning towards Andre Johnson, just cause I like to have him and root for him every game, but I know this league is heavy on QB points, so maybe Peyton would be a good pick.

Suggestions, ideas? Who are your top 10-20 picks in order right now?

If you want AJ, I would say draft him. Pick up Rodgers are Schaub or Cutler with your second.

Do you have espn insider? If so, go look at Matt Berry's draft manifesto.

When it comes to fantasy football, if you're serious about winning, you need to draft with your head and not your heart. In your scoring rules (no ppr), receivers are weak. You should be considering Peyton or Adrian Peterson. Personally, I'd go Peterson, and hopefully Rodgers or even Schaub is still there in the 2nd. If you really really must have AJ, and if your league allows it, try trading down.

Yeah, I just read that, and he makes a lot of good points. Thanks!

For this league, it's just for fun. No money for the winner, but you get your name on a huge football trophy that resembles the Lombardi trophy and you get to keep it on your desk so long as you are the reining champion. If you get dead last, you get a trophy with a toilet on top of a wooden block with your name on it :D

If AD is sitting there at the 3rd pick you would be crazy not to pick him IMO. There are basically 3 elite RB's in the league (AD, MJD, and Chris Johnson) and CJ has only done it once. On the other hand there are a bunch of good QB's, Manning, Brees, Rogers, Brady, Schaub, Rivers, Favre (I could see any of these guys leading their position in points). Plus you have a lot of decent tier 2 guys like Romo, Mcnabb, Cutler, Eli Manning, or even Kolb.

That's 12 QB's that I would feel comfortable starting for my team. I would grab the best of the big 3 backs in round one then see how many QB's come off the board by your next pick. If you still have one of your top rated QB's sitting there, then grab him. If every team grabs a QB with one of their first 2 picks then I would stockpile RB's and WR's and grab my signal caller in the 6th or seventh.

Don't draft division rivals or players on teams that you really hate. It's suicide all year trying to deal with pulling for people for fantasy purposes and hoping that team can still lose. But i drafted CJ and Peyton in two seperate drafts this year so i am a hypocrite.

I've gotta really disagree with this line of thinking, for the same reason you don't overvalue players on "your" team. For one thing, taking all Colts out of play is pretty much FF suicide.

Draft who you believe will get you the most points - screw who they play for.

Exactly right. I just watch to make sure I don't get too many players that share a bye week.

In any league where all TD's are worth 6 points I suggest you take a QB in the top 8. Brees, Schaub, Manning, Rodgers, Maybe Brady.

AJ will go first round. LOCK. I doubt Rodgers or Schaub are around at the bottom of the 2nd.

My post was very tongue-in-cheek, i guess no one caught it. I pick players on division rivals nearly every year, and although i win, i hate myself for doing it. That's the point i was trying to make.

This is now my thinking. Looking at the top 10 scorers in the league last year, 13 of the top 16 scorers were QBs, and the 3 RBs that fill out the top 16 are CJ, AP and MJD @ 16. Rodgers was #1, then Brees, Farve and Manning. So I think I will go with Aaron Rodgers because the Packers are my favorite NFC team and he will do wonders win an improved O-line. Just hope they don't go for more running plays...

Second round I will try to get a great RB or WR, but it will all depend on how the other 17 picks go in between.

I get where you're coming from, but the difference between the top 3 QB's total last year, and the 10-12 QB's is about 100 points on the season in this league. QB is the most important position, followed by RB, then WR. Rodgers was very consistent last year, and I think he's ready to do it again. I can probably get him and a top WR or RB at the end of the 2nd.

I would seriously consider taking AP if he were there and a QB in the 2nd. Look at the point differential between the top 3 rb's and the next level, and then look at the differential of the QB's. I think you can still get one of the top 10 QB in the second.

Exactly right. I just watch to make sure I don't get too many players that share a bye week.

Last year I actually drafted so that 6 of my starters all shared the same bye week. I basically threw week 4, and won most of the games but missed the playoffs by 1 :( So that strategy kinda worked...

Ok, just did some mock drafts and wow, all the good RBs are off the board in the first two rounds. Even Brady, Romo, Favre and Schaub all made it to the picks 32 and later in both mocks. So yeah, RB it is...

CJ will likely be #1, Brees #2 because that guy is a huge Saints fan. So, Adrian Peterson or MJD?

AP all day

If you are going to wait until round 2 for a QB, then I would go with Andre Johnson. If you would rather take a RB, then go Peterson.

FYI I would consider taking Ray Rice before I took MJD. Just me talkin.

I think with the looming possibility that Favre doesn't come back, only makes his stock have more potential.

Even if Farve does come back AD will get his touches. Just try to snap up Gerhart as protection later on.

I'd go AP, if not him I would pick the QB you think will put up the most points: Brady, Peyton, Schaub, Rodgers...whomever. I still believe in going RB with the first pick though.

We just did our draft. I think I'm going to like my team going into next season.

QB: Drew Brees
RB : Knowshon Moreno
RB : Ronnie Brown
WR : Brandon Marshall
WR Marques Colston
WR: Jeremy Maclin
TW : Owen Daniels

Defense: SD Chargers
Kicker Garrett Hartley

Will have to tinker with my bench once I am able to get to the Waiver wire.

I need both OD and Brown to be healthy going into the season. IF they are I think this team will be explosive.

I completely agree with what you're doing, and depending on how things fall, you will then have the advantage of having only four picks by two teams between your 2nd and 3rd round pick (assuming it's a snake-type format). I've always liked the options that having picks that close together open up (particularly if your closely following the picks and needs of the two teams that draft between your picks).

I wish it were that way, but unfortunately, this is a "random every odd round snake draft". So I have picks 3 and 21 in the first two rounds, then 4th pick in the 3rd, but the three teams that pick before me will be different than the two after me in the 2nd... so it's all over the place. Very difficult to predict others picks in this type of draft and we have no trades in this league, so I gotta draft good.

Mercy, where are you playing that league at? Sounds sucky to me.

It's with a bunch of co-workers. Two 12 team leagues. There was a big hoopla last year over a trade someone tried to do during the preseason, and the commish didn't want to deal with bickering anymore so he turned off trades.

The draft order thing has been like that since I joined. I thought it was retarded, but the commish likes it. This league isn't all that fantastic, but I do have a few friends and a bunch of co-workers in it, so I don't want to leave.

those are some crazy draft rules being random and all.

I gotta go with the consensus and roll with AP at #3 and they are the same reasons JB gave. Basically, there aren't a lot of good RBs and there are plenty of good QBs that will put points on the board for you. Go for QB after you have at least 2 or even 3 starters, and if possible try and get the QB of your #1 WR and/or #1 TE.

Nothing better than the doublescore on your QBs TDs. Rivers to Jackson and Gates last year was golden. Won my first Super Bowl after 11 years of being our league's fantasy football equivalent of the Buffalo Bills. (9 playoff appearances including 4 SuperBowl appearances without a title)

my team last year was sick (8 team league)
Rivers
Peterson
Gore
Andre Johnson
Fitzgerald
Vincent Jackson
Gates
Akers
Ravens

and some good guys on the bench like Johnathan Stewart who dominated late in the season when it was FF playoff time.

Go with RB in 1st then best RB or WR in the 2nd, then start looking at what other teams still need a QB and act accordingly in order to still land a quality QB at a position of high value. drafting against the grain can help too. when people are scrambling to fill WR draft QB. when people are scrambling for RB draft WR. Once you have some quality starters, be the first to look at TE and Kicker. The difference between the top5 TEs and the rest of the guys is astronomical...and as any fantasy football veteran knows, the Kicker can win a lot of games for you when points are at a premium.

That team is sick! I know an eight team league, but how in the world did the other managers let you pull that off?

Yeah, I'm actually comfortable with getting Favre, Chad Henne or Kolb as a QB in a later round. I like the upside of Henne now that they have Brandon Marshall.

How the hell do you get AP, AJ and Fitz? Did you have the #1 pick overall? I could see that happening, 1 get AP, 16/17 get the WRs, but man... you got lucky with all the high rated busts of Forte, Slaton, Calvin Johnson, etc...

This is why I don't like early drafts-this looked great two weeks ago but now not so much-check out Moreno's injury...

Well, I finished my draft on Saturday night. I had the #3 pick and ended up with this team:

Team Purple Draaaaaaaaank!

QB: Joe Flacco
RB: Adrian Peterson
RB: Steven Jackson
WR: Steve Smith (Car)
WR: Donald Driver
RB/WR/TE: Jerome Harrison
TE: Vernon Davis
K: Shayne Graham
DST: Saints

RS: Donovan McNabb
RS: Thomas Jones
RS: Michael Crabtree
RS: Greg Olsen
RS: Jamarcus Russell - third to last pick of the draft lol!

I'm happy with it, the only problem is that Jamarcus takes up two bench spots...

Also, this is my team icon:
