But on draft day, he was passed over. More than one team was concerned Brown would be mobilized for duty in Afghanistan as soon as he was drafted.

"They were kind of terrified that the moment they draft me I would get shipped overseas," said Brown, 22, who was drafted by the Texans in the sixth round. "It kind of hurt me a lot that they would think that."

There was reason for concern. Two batteries of the 114th Field Artillery Regiment from Mississippi already had left for duty in Afghanistan in February. Spc. 4 Brown was part of that unit but was not one of the 300 deployed. So far, only those who volunteered for duty have been mobilized...


...On the second day of the draft, the Texans' top targets were receiver Jerome Mathis and Brown.

"We gambled," Texans general manager Charley Casserly said. "Well really, I gambled. I think the scouts wanted to take him in the fourth round, but I said, no, we're going to take Mathis. We just had to gamble that because he didn't have a lot of visits, he would slip."

Brown will probably start Saturday night, but Ramon Walker will be right there just in case.

Earl hurt his shoulder. They had called it a separation but it doesn't seem to be major from the reports I've seen. A week or two of rest and he should be as good as new.
 
Awesome Stuff. I think it makes the most sense to take Mathis first with the information provided. Did the scouts really think that a guy, most teams didnt even go see, would be plucked ahead of Mathis, the fastest player in the draft?

If you like him there is a chance someone else does. Teams are often cryptic at that time of year.
 
:thumbup It would seem that while not very glamorous , this draft could be very solid . I hear good things about Johnson, Morency ,Mathis , Brown and Buchanon was had for a 2nd.
 
Buchanon was had for a 2nd and a 3rd. And if he plays up to his capabilities it was a steal for the Texans.

I agree that this year's draft class could end up being really strong. Johnson will see action this year and will eventually be a starter. Morency should end up being the backup and that is a very vital role for a team that wants to run the ball as much as the Texans. Mathis will return kickoffs and possibly punts as a rookie, and eventually could be a impact player at WR. Hodgdon could end up being a starter at center in a couple of years. Brown may be the free safety of the future. And Pettway could be a contributor at OLB in the future.

Brown has a better chance of being the strong safety of the future. Glenn Earl is not an All-American stud like SeanTaylor or Thomas Davis. He's a decent college safety with a growing history of injuries.
 
we have some good young strong safeties in Earl, Brown, and Walker. should be interesting to see which ones make the team this year.
