Texans DLine rank #11

barrett

yahoo!'s (how is that gramatically correct?) crush on the Texans continues.

11. Houston Texans: When you start with end Mario Williams(notes), you have a leg up on just about everybody in the league. In fact, the Texans’ line got into the top half of the league almost on Williams alone. In short, he is a monster, both in terms of holding up at the point of attack and getting to the passer. He is proof of why the Texans were right on the money in passing on running back Reggie Bush(notes) with the No. 1 pick in the 2006 draft. Now, some other guys have to start playing on a consistent level, starting with fellow end Antonio Smith and tackle Amobi Okoye(notes).
Although I don't give this ranking much weight, it's still yet more positive press that continues to flood the information super tollway on an almost daily basis. All that need to be done now is to prove all these brilliant writers correrct.

In other news, the New England Patriots were excited to see that they had just as many players listed in Fox Sports' Top 100 players as your very own Houston Texans. 5.

Can you guess who they are? And the bigger question, is #16 for THE BEST WR IN FOOTBALL a snub?
Is it September yet?

I would probably have Schaub in leiu of broken Daniels. In fact, Schaub's probably our 2nd or 3rd best player overall.
Second easily....just by position alone. If Mario finds his heart this season and the chip he had on his shoulder during his first couple of years in the league, he could challenge for that spot.

From bottom to top it was

Cushing, 73

Schaub, 49

Demeco,43

Mario, 26

The Best Wide Reciever in the NFL, 16.

I would flip Matt and Demeco. If Matt puts up another stellar season in 2010 then I think he moves right to the top 15 or 20 guys in the NFL just by nature of the positon. Being the best or top 2 or 3 at a position is spectacular in the NFL. To be a top 5 QB is even more impressive. Such a challenging position. Man, it sure is nice to have one!

Go Texans.

Schaub has made too many mistakes in big games to be a top 100 player, IMHO. Plus, he's been healthy for one entire season. How many QBs are ranked in the top 100? That's the problem with a list like this. QBs are overvalued because of the position. Not saying that Manning, Brady, and Brees aren't top players and worthy of their ranking. They are. Just that guys like Rodgers, Cutler, and Schaub have yet to prove it over time.

Will a QB always be rated higher than a TE? Is David Garrard a better player than Chris Cooley, just because of the position he plays? Owen Daniels has been a better TE over his career than Matt Schaub has been a QB. I don't think that's even disputable.

solid post, schaub isn't all pro till he gets it done in the playoffs. qb's aren't judged by fantasy stats.

flip matt and demeco??? meco a two time probowler in 4 yrs and schaub once in how many? i might be wrong on this but meco is probably top 5 at his position but not schaub. not talking trash about my qb but his position on the list might be generous.

Truth be told, I'm impressed, that I've read 10 posts so far, and not one post questioning the 11th ranking of the D-Line.

Agreed, if I was going to switch anyone it'd be D-Ryans and Mario. IMO, other than AJ, D-Ryans has been the more consistent player of the bunch.

I don't see why. Mario was top 10(many top 5) in basically every meaningful DE static in 2009. He had a great season even if the sack total wasn't as high as expected, and he did it with a bum shoulder. He's become a well rounded complete player who can be a force against the run and pass, which very few DE's are capable of these days. Ryans is a very good player but he isn't elite the way Ray was in his prime or Willis is now, and he is a much better run defender than he is in coverage.

And I agree with you on most all the points you make. I just think D-Ryans is underrated by a lot of people. I also think it could be argued as to which of the two had more flaws in their game than the other.

In the end, they're both bad ass in their own right and I'm grateful we've got the both of them.

Going into next season, I don't really have a problem with us being #11. We're not elite by any stretch of the imagination but we're above average. The line is underrated against the run... a little weak up the middle but very strong on the outside they provide pressure... especially considering the coverage abilities of our corners was no where near elite. 11 is about right.

Sacks are way overrated when measuring the ability of any individual player. I think we've just been weak in every way up the middle for years....and it lowers Mario's sacks too. I still think a lack of size in our DTs is the overall problem, but maybe, in his particular case, the weight AO has lost might help. People need to play at their best weight, regardless of what league they are in.

I like what we have at DE. From top to bottom we have a formidable DE unit. But nobody is gonna notice anyone other than Mario until we get some push up the middle.
