How's are TE situation looking?

WILLIEG

Waterboy
I just saw that Miller has been put on the injured list and was curious on how our other TE's were looking especially the rookie Halterman. :ouch:

Other posters claiming Kailee Wong is being auditioned for the position -
hey, he might end up being the first 2-way starter in the NFL since Chuck Bednarik !

where did you see that?

So how does Halterman look? :ouch:

Seriously, he has not been mentioned by the press, the coaching staff or any of our posters who attend live practice.

doesn't seem like too serious of an injury to me. atleast this may give guys like halterman, murphy, and rivers some more reps at TE.

What is the deal with Bubba Franks. Does anyone know?

Bubba would be a great addition, but I dont think he's going anywhere, he is about to break a few records at Lambeu Field this year, and Favre is in better shape than he has been in years....I am hoping that Rivers will do well in TC/PS and light a fire under Billy, they have GOT to do something about the TE pos. :brickwall

As far as I am concerned, there are two positions that must be addressed next year (assuming they continue to be an issue this season), OLT and TE. We fix those and Mathis starts to come into his own, and this team will be GTG.

Im curious to see how Wells does at FB, Im hoping they put him in a role similar to Chris Cooley (Was) FB/TE

SHOOT, I'm curious to see what Robaire Smith does at Fullback in short yardage situations!!!!

I personally believe that next years draft will be strong at 2 positions, LT and TE, the 2 positions we most desperately need. So I say we go for Eric Winston or Jonathan Scott or even Marcus McNeil with our first pick, and since Mercedes Lewis will be gone by the second pick (unless we trade our second and third to move up into the bottom of the 1st), we go woth one of the two best all around TEs IMO. Tim Day of Oregon or Dominique Byrd from USC, both are over 260 and both can block well as well as stretch the field.

Keep an eye on Byrd. Being from USC is a big plus. Mr. McNair is a USC grad and we always have a big interest in USC players it seems.

When is Rivers going to step in and become the starter? I have high hopes for him, but I haven't heard a thing about him. He has a lot of potential, and I wish he would make us forget about our TE situation.

Bubba may be available just yet -

Caught this today over at SI

- The Green Bay Packers remained without tight end Bubba Franks in uniform after lengthy negotiations Tuesday failed to settle his contract dispute. Agent Gene Mato and Andrew Brandt, the team's vice president of player finance, exchanged proposals for several hours before talks broke off without discussion of when they might resume.

Hey CC & Co. - any money left in the 'kitty' to maybe make a deal for a decent TE like this??

Which means, of course, we will trade up in the draft so we can take another linebacker.

I agree with Ogre. We have to address LT and TE next offseason....and no I don't need to see the season to know these positions are weak. I know it now, and so does everyone else with two eyes and a brain. Assuming we don't address either via free agency, If we don't come away with a LT and a TE on day one of the draft next year, I might be the one to make an "offseason failure" thread next year. :brickwall

So no matter what they need to draft a LT next year? Wand only gives up 5 sacks while remaining a dominant run blocker and they still need to draft a LT? I'll wait for the season.

Wand may not give up any sacks at LT this year if our star offseason acquisition Riley starts at LT.

Wand was so good last year, they started pulling him on passing downs for a guy who got cut from the Browns this year before they even played a down of preseason football, and has essentially already lost his starters job to a guy that has been playing RT for 5 years. Maybe that explains why he only gave up 5 sacks. I'll stand by my statement, thankyaverymuch.

Trying sticking with the hypothetical--everything above is for the coming year and made no reference to the past year. If Wand starts full time in 2005 and gives up just 5 sacks you already have decided to take a (make that any) 1st day LT next year to replace him based on what he did in 2004? Go ahead and stand by that statement, thankyouverymuch.

They tried that one game and it was an utter failure. Why? The coaches never did it again because Wand was better than the guy they were replacing him with. Don't use a coaching mistake as proof Wand is bad. Wand played all of 15 games and missed the passing plays during that one game.

It is so "obvious" to people that Wand is bad that they don't realize McKinney is the weak link. If Pace had been in Wand's place last year, it would have done nothing to stop the constant pressure up the middle.

Watch the line play closely this year, and you'll see that replacing the LT isn't a panacea.

Pitts made a huge improvement his second year at LT - Wand may do the same. The coaches and some posters here are penalizing the "3 year project" because he was ahead of the curve and started his entire second season.
