UH unveils plan for new Football stadium and Hofheinz upgrade

I wish this would be good enough to propel them into a better conference than the C-USA but alas, I think it's too late for that.

Hopefully UH holds off on mucking up any parking situations related to this project until after I get my masters

Dear Rena Khator and UH administration,

Build some new parking lots before you destroy the ones around Robertson. Don't bungle this up again like you did with the new dorms.

You mean destroying the business school/law school parking lot for un needed dorms, BEFORE a plan for dorm parking had been put into place?

And running headlines in the school paper like 'un-used parking spaces being wasted at TSU.'

Yeah, because as a commuter student I really want to park at a nearby college and shuttle over to the law school. It was such a joke. The powers that be's opinion was as long as there is a parking space SOME WHERE for each student on campus, the school is ok.

I said in on a lot of meetings about that, they just didn't care.

This is where Metro's light rail line comes in. Lets hope it finishes before the stadium opens. It'll improve mobility around UH and TSU greatly. There are actually two lines that will cross UH now that I think about it. That may be why they are a little lax on the parking situation.

If I am a commuter student - IE I may drive down to campus for one or two classes at a time, I surely don't want to have to park and wait on a train.

That's their problem, despite being a 'working man's' school and commuter campus, they're trying to act like they are not.

Just too darned unsafe to be a normal campus IMHO.

FYI my SGA buddies tell me that when UH is finished with all the campus remodeling in 2020 with new parking garages and all that crap, we're gonna enjoy a net gain of +200 parking spaces

Are you guys saying that you aren't feeling good about a new stadium + renovations to Hoffeinz? (Not like it'll actually happen)

As I am no longer a student there, I don't care how bad it messes up parking and traffic for student :kitten: I'm all for a new stadium!!

I'd love to see UH's facilities upgraded, but this plan is right out of a Steve Martin SNL skit: How to Have a Million Dollars and Not Pay Taxes.

We could call this plan, "How to Build/Renovate Outdated Athletic Facilities for $160 Million". It's steps are:
First, get $160 million.
Second, start building things to look like these pretty drawings.

The money part is going to be far, far easier said than done. Hopefully, they'll come through, but this is not going to be the easiest time to raise money.

Man, I come to Spain 3 weeks ago, all of last week had little access to the internet, I come back to Madrid where I now have access and see all this stuff that has happened in college football since I left.

So the Big 12 almost imploded and then it didn't? Nebraska and Colorado have left and ESPN is saying out of all of this Texas came out a winner? Maybe the school and the program fiscally but not the fans. I would rather see Texas in a conference with better teams. We are still stuck with Baylor, Iowa State, etc.

OK, so why I am I posting this in this thread? Because MAYBE this finally the thing that puts UH in the Big 12. I have been wanting that for years. So is there any talk of that now? Surely Houston can get in now and have a chance to become a national power again.

I see what you're saying. UH's plan is to become less of a commuter school though. I think it can happen, as it has been happening to UT-Arlington for a couple of years. UH is in a better position than they are.

Then they would have to close the 5th ward. The UHPD updates are scary as Hell. violent daylight mugging, violent night mugging, violent sexual assualt, dead bum, all before Tuesday!

TCU and UH - Big XII makes sense to me. Steal Arkansas from the SEC as their not really happy. I know that makes it 13, but surely we can invite another team...... *SIGH* I guess I'm just wanting to see a lot of the SWC teams back together... Silly me.....

*remembers*

Arkansas (1915-1991)
Baylor (1915-1996)
Houston (1971-1975 played but not eligible for football title, 1976-1996)
Oklahoma (1915-1919)
Oklahoma A&M (1915-1925) I believe that's now OSU.
Rice (1915-1917 provisional, 1918-1996)
Southern Methodist (1918-1996)
Texas (1915-1996)
Texas A&M (1915-1996)
TCU (1923-1996)
Texas Tech (1956-1957 played but not eligible for football title, 1958-1996)

Rice and SMU have some work to do do, but......... anything is possible.

It's not safe, but I LOVE the fitness center.

From what I understand, the light rail will destroy the surrounding neighborhoods with higher taxes. I'll admit, it's a bit disturbing to drive around UH and see mansions in between horrible neighborhoods.

For those screaming about parking, that's a problem at most campuses even those who seemingly have plentiful parking. Anyone who's had to hitch hike to class from 1 of Texas A&M's parking lots on the outskirts of campus can tell you that.

Everyone's also making the assumption that this all started because of conference realignment and whatnot which can't be further from the truth imo. This has been a long time coming but got pushed to the front burner because Tom "crazy hair" Penders skewered the school in the press about hophienz's garbage facilities right before the NCAA tournament this year.School officials got egg on their face and now have vowed to do something about it come hell or high water, when in reality, something should've been done about it a long time ago.

Another thing is that you're going to have campus crime no matter what campus you're at & i have a hard time believing that UH's is significantly higher than any other campus's just b/c it's located next to a poor neighborhood with a bad reputation from the 80's. Especially with how open University campuses are these days. I went there for 5 years, parked all over the place & didn't come close to having anything happening to me. Ditto for many of my friends who went there. As someone said in one of their comments to the article "poor people aren't out to get you folks."

Obviously as a UH alum, I like the idea even if the stadium will only seat a maximum of 50,000 it just needs to happen. Everyone knows that the big time money in college sports is located in a schools football program & if upgrading the facilities helps us to gain entrance into a better conference thereby getting some meaningful college football & basketball games back in town, i'm all for it. Yeah, it's a commuter's school In a big city, but that doesn't mean we can't compete reasonably well. Miami & USC over the years have shown us that you can.

It's just a wrong perception. UH doesn't even rank in the top 50 of most violent crime ridden schools. The perception (which is wrong) comes from a high profile murder; The homeless guy that was shot at a bus stop...

100 Most Dangerous American Colleges

Dilema in the 3rd Ward: How Safe is UH?

Good Post TB. I see michigan is high on the list which doesn't surprise me since this guy along with one of his buddies was roaming their campus as a felon in the prime of his bank robbing career.

I saw a documentary about this guy and his crew at Michigan. Nice inmate program. Send them to college unsupervised... BRILLIANT!!

I disagree with the rankings.

1. Never heard of most of those schools.

2. Most list 'forcible sex offenses.' While not condoning things like sexual assault and rape, a lot of students at big schools put themselves in the bad situation. I don't mean people deserve things, but that they make choices to get to the bad situation. With U of H crimes people get nailed walking to their cars. You can't not go to your car. My perception is that crime at U of H is more violent and random than most 'real' schools on that list.

The wife and I still get police blotter e-mails, it is scary crap.

Most schools are't commuter schools. U of H is dedicated to the 'working man' and 'night classes.' Unless that has changed, most students do not live on campus and therefore parking should be more readily available IMHO.

When I drove to Ohio State my senior year it was a nightmare finding parking. However, that was my choice. There was PLENTY of acceptable on and off campus housing withing walking/biking distance of the school. As for a long hike from one class to the next, OSU had a shuttle system for 'west campus.' Maybe A&M needs one :) (the entire rest of the campus is 12 minutes walking one end to the other)

Yep. I don't give a damn what statistics say. I'll tell y'all what I said in a letter to campus security: your safety statistics don't do one bit of good for the people who have been robbed, raped, and killed. Your "security cameras" are in actuality "forensics cameras". Learn the difference, for all our sakes.

Stats don't mean much when you're one of the ones having to walk to the car with your head on a swivel.

Ummmmm Forcible sex offenses are much more violent than having someone gank your laptop.

Thanks for proving the articles correct by using the term "perception". I think you're just a little miffed because Ohio State was on one of the lists. ;)

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight... Yeah because crime statistics don't mean a damn thing.

Well all the little scaredy cats can avoid going to Coogs games but I'll keep going. Whaaaaaaaaaa :cry2:

Sure they mean something - to the people who weren't victims.

The part that pisses me off about the UH situation is that there are things they could be doing, but they refuse.

What was the point of this breakup again? The monies?

Well, it really started with a bunch of recruiting violations throughout the conference. Most severe was SMU, was the biggest offender of all, being sentenced the "Death-Penalty". Subsequently, Arkansas bailed and other than Texas and Texas A&M attendance had started to dwindle.

Sure they mean something - to the people who weren't victims.

Other than having 500 cameras, 45 Campus police officers, 19 security officers and separate parking lot security, what more can they do?? I guess maybe they could hire a few more cops.

Look, I'm not suggesting that the 3rd Ward is completely safe. Just don't wander north of Elgin or west / Southwest (i.e.) TSU.

At A&M I had 0 things happen. At SHSU my vehicle was burglarized twice. At UH, 0, nada...

Are you kidding me? With all the couch burning, petty theft, minor in possessions, etc., at one of the country's largest universities I would ASSUME OSU would be on the list. Also an urban campus.

I'd like to see a comparison of violent and random crimes. I think U of H would be comparatively very dangerous. I could be wrong, but we may never know.

There were several large schools not listed. I don't think Notre Dame or Nebraska were listed, although not urban campuses. I don't think the size of the school mattered as I thought it was based on per capita incidents.

Actually I would too... Until then, any opinion (including the misperception that UH is maven for violent crime) is just speculation.

Like I said, if you don't wander north of Elgin and too far west and a little south (Close to TSU), you are no more at risk than just about any other college campus.

The most violent crimes committed on college campuses were committed by students. i.e. people who "belonged" on campus.

I'm sure if polled at the time, people at the university of texas in the 60's would've thought their campus was pretty safe until Charles Whitman decided to climb a building and shoot at people. I would wager that the majority of VA tech students thought the same prior to Seung hui Cho in 2007.

But as far as people getting "nailed" walking to their cars at UH, how do you even know the people committing these crimes are from the 3rd ward area?

I only say that to get to my larger point: doesn't matter where you're at, safety is an illusion anywhere you go, especially at places like college campuses which are completely open for anyone from anywhere to walk up & do their worst. Bottom line is you should take the same precautions you would walking around ANY campus as if you were walking around in a large parking lot for a Wal-Mart, Costco or any other mini-mall.

Like TB, im not saying that the surrounding area is like the hamptons, but it's not "Cops: city under seige" either.

Just want to point out that just the perception of UH being a dangerous campus is bad enough for the school's image, regardless of statistics, facts, or real talk.

Pretty much no way to fix that in the mind of the average person until Third Ward gets demolished.

The average person should spend time on campus before thinking such perceptions are reality. I wonder how many people actually looked at the side by side security reports of UH and LSU that I posted?

I looked at crime map (forget where), but actually the HBU area had more reported murders in it's surrounding areas than that of UH.

i meant the numbers for burglary for LSU is pretty much double what UH had... at least that's what i saw in my brief glance at the statistics.

Right. I gotcha. Were or are you surprised that LSU's student pop, is less than UH's?? Isn't it funny that LSU is in Baton Rouge, which is a college town while UH is in the "ghetto"???

Kinda did me, but then again, LSU is in Baton Rouge, and UH is in Houston...

i actually was..with it being THE big state school of Louisiana and all. Regardless, it just goes to what you and i have been saying. Doesn't matter where you're at, criminal turds are everywhere. I'd be interested to see what USC's looks like as their campus is located right next to the infamous Watts neighborhood.
