Gary Kubiak TD Club Speech

Here's the entirety of Coach Kubiak's Touchdown Club Luncheon Speech.

If you want to understand the what Kubiak's vision for the team is, please watch these videos:

Gary Kubiak says the "Super Bowl" words

From my introduction:
Texans coach Gary Kubiak is usually pretty careful to talk about how winning the whole thing in the NFL is all about getting into the playoffs and giving yourself a chance at winning more.

In Wednesday's Touchdown Club of Houston luncheon, Gary Kubiak used the "Super Bowl" words. I've seen all sorts of public speeches he's given, and that's the most that he has ever referenced the Super Bowl.

But his speech is more than that. So as not to give you just my impression of the speech or a version that has what someone thinks is important, I give you the head coach of the Houston Texans unedited and in three parts.

If you are a fan, this is worth watching. He talks where the team has been, this year's rookies and what he thinks are the priorities of the team. Basically, it is the theme of this year's team.

Confidence. Physical play. Increased expectations. Super Bowl?

For thems who couldn't be there. Enjoy.

And he shits on Holliday again. What is his deal?

No no no.

He is making a point that if he is going to activate him on game day, with limited roster spots, he needs to know that he has a guy who can also play wide receiver.

If he hated Holliday, he wouldn't mention this stuff. He only talks this sort of stuff to guys he wants to be able to keep.

I'm putting the Marciano video up once I edit it down--Coach Joe likes to talk. Coach Joe loves Holliday.

Ah, ok, I mis-interpreted then. Great job, by the way. I always like reading your stuff.

Thanks Steph, that was terrific! And I challenge anyone to watch that and say that Gary has no public speaking skills. He had the audience in the palm of his hand from the first minute on.

He makes you feel pretty good about the team.

Why (Super Bowl)? Returner is important enough to be a stand alone position, if need be. Kubiak has no problem (Super Bowl) activating David Anderson for a few snaps per game, and he's useless on special teams. If injuries hit the WR position that hard (Super Bowl) in a game, Daniels or Casey could play the slot and play it well.

Otherwise, (Super Bowl) good speech. And I can't stop saying Super Bowl.

Yours truly said it himself. He sees the needs of improving the core!

At risk of sounding dumb, You really think Daniels or Casey could play slot and be good at it? Have we ever lined them up in slot? Do any teams line their tight ends in the slot?

Dallas Clark or Jason Whitten do it quite frequently. I'm sure those guys could handle it, given their abilities as route runners/pass catchers.

Thanks TexansChick, that was a great speech. It shows Kubiak knows exactly what our issues are/were, and I believe he has a handle on it.

I think the "Public speech issues" are all about Gary not saying what we want him to say after the games, and him saying the same things after games, "It's on me" "we weren't very good there" etc... Some of our fans wants him to do a Denny Greene or a Mike Singletary some times.

Personally, I like how he doesn't use the media to "talk" to his players. Shows class IMHO.

Dallas Clark is basically a slot receiver half the time. The mold of TE that's a bit lighter with great hands and good speed poses matchup nightmares. OD could definitely do it, and I'd be willing to bet Casey could as well.

What is it with this hollow hype about the Super Bowl ? For Christ-sakes coach, win some games in your own divivison (unlike going 1-5 last year !), and get us into the playoffs once, just one time, then trash-talk SB if you want. In the meantime get real, and focus on your division oppponents like the season-opener in Reliant.

I like Kubiak. But I wonder why we don't come out with more two tight-end sets, where the opposing D has to play their standard sets. Then move OD out to the slot. That will take one of the front seven out of the box, which should help us run the ball.

Did you watch the speech? Did you read the transcript? He addressed those issues.

Thanks for sharing TC!

I would recommend folks not only watch, but listen, to the videos before putting finger to keyboard when contributing to this thread.

What did Arizona have on it's resume before they appeared in the Super Bowl?

yeah... NOTHING.

We are either playing well, or we're not. We've got a very good chance of getting to the play-offs in 2010. If we get in, we've got a very good chance of getting to the Super Bowl. If we get to the Super Bowl, we've got a very good shot at winning it all.

Besides, I'd rather my coach talk Super Bowl, instead of hyping up the opening game.

You didn't even bother to watch the video... That's clear. He hyper-focused on precisely that: winning divisional games and getting to the playoffs. Specifically, he talked about how the first game of the season represents the three areas the team needs to improve on in order to reach their ultimate goal.

I really don't understand fans like you. There is 23 minutes of video of your head coach giving a speech about the 2010 football season and all you have to do is click. Instead, you are uninspired to listen to him but inspired to type a cynical criticism of the coach/team on a message board about the video that you didn't bother to watch.

Am I crazy or is that odd to other people as well?

Did you listen to the actual clip? He didn't predict SB, he said the players have changed their break chant to SB.

Didn't he say all that?

Thinking of Earl Mitchell "Stealing somebodies lunch money up front" is pretty hilarious to me.

That was great, TC, thank you.

I think most know I'm a "trenches" kind of guy. With that said, I got a bit pumped when he began talking about Mitchell. I've been kinda chomping at the bit for info on our big nasties, but haven't heard much at all about Mitchell. I really, really hope Kubiak wasn't talking fluff. I'll definitely be keeping up with the Mitch throughout camp and I hope the praise continues when they strap the pads on.

It's also in the genes of Gary's playbook, Shannon Sharp played TE in the slot. OD has the ability to create mismatches in the slot as well as Jones does.

Everyone is talking about this Super Bowl talk. I, for one, want to hear my coach start using that word more often because that is what this game is about. All the people saying 'Let's talk about making the playoffs first' are the same ones that are mad at fans who are happy we had a 9-7 season.

What really needs to be talked about is what Alan Burge picked up in that speech:

"Kubiak said that George Siefert once told him that you've achieved your goal as a coach when you can start to turn things over to the players on the field - and trust that everything will be run correctly. Kubiak thinks the Texans are close to that point."

Could it be possible that we see Matt Schaub running more audibles? There were a few times I think that if we would've let Matt call the plays during the two minute drills that we would've won those games by either getting a TD or getting closer for Kris Brown to possibly make a FG.

Well you nailed me cold there Murf, way-to-go 'cause it does appear I'm guilty of taking Kubiaks comment (or a quote of his comment as it were) out of context based upon your summary of his presentation.
And no Murf, you're more than likely not crazy.

i am admittedly not a huge fan of Kubiak, but I did like the tone of his speech as well as his goals. i was really getting sick of him talking about his 'kids' and how the playoffs were a goal. screw the playoffs, the goal should always be a championship even if it doesn't look realistic at face value.

aim high i always say

now that they can talk the talk, they need to learn to walk the walk...
...and adding some more talent to the team would help too.

If we don't make it to the sb then what do we riot ???? Lol
No we draft a defensive tackle and two tight ends and wait until next season.

Has everyone donated to the message board for this month? Just a reminder.

Talking the talk is great.

Walking the walk is a different proposition.

I do like how Kubes is setting high goals.

Cliffnotes?

It's OK to say the words, now. Super Bowl. Super Bowl. Super Bowl.

In fact, the words Super Bowl will be included in each post I make for the rest of the season. Hopefully concluding at the Super Bowl.

Just a note: Kubiak admitted that the Texans should have been a playoff team last season. He didn't think the results were good enough. I happen to agree with him.

Just saying. Super Bowl.

WOW, KT that's a post that I agree with you - no matter what side of the fence folks sit on....

[bolded] Ya think???

That said, I agree. It's time to walk the walk, dadgum!!!!!

I liked the speech, because I felt as if Kubiak was telling us what he really thought. I am always interested in what is going on in their heads. So many of our arguments are over what we think they think.

He talked about the things we've identified, needing to win in our division, something he's talked about since day 1. I can understand how some question his resolve to this end, considering our division record over the last 4 years.

He talked about the need to get more physical, and the need to get better on the offensive line. Things we've all talked about.

Our need to be able to overcome adversity. This is another that we've talked about. We've called it different things. Some call it having the confidence knowing they can win any game. I call it maturity, maturity to continue to dig deeper for the resolve to finish games. An interesting statistic, that I don't recall being brought up on this board, was when he said something like,

We lost 7 games...
4 times on offense with a chance to take the lead or tie the game...
3 times on defense with a lead and the opposing team inside their 10yard line

I just think it is nice to know Kubiak and his staff see the same issues we see, and are addressing them.

I understand that some of us don't agree with how Kubiak is going about addressing those issues... but it's nice all the same.

Coach Kubiak has a good understanding of what needs to be done, and I liked hearing his thoughts about the progress of the team so far and the points of focus to make this a successful season.

Three months is sooooo long to wait!! :texflag: Thanks for posting this, TC!

I forgot about this and didn't get the chance to watch it until just now. I thought Kubiak did a great job and was pretty candid (as much as head coach can be in public) about his thought process on how to lead this team and what needs to happen to accomplish our collective goals from the coaching staff and players all the way down to the fan base. He wants to do the city proud and it shows. Listening to the speech was time well spent.

Thanks for posting.
