What about Troy Nolan?

I was intrigued by the writeup on Troy Nolan in today's Chronicle. Seems he's made a bit of an impression on the staff with his understanding and knowledge of his assignments and positional responsibilities. He was also described as a "ballhawk". What really caught my attention though is : "For his brief time he was competing last camp, Nolan quickly earned a reputation as one of the hardest hitters on the roster".

He's a 6'-2", 207 lb strong safety, but is also playing free safety behind Wilson.

What's the chances of his winning the starting free safety position? Wilson seems to be adequate, but nothing special, so could Nolan be an upgrade? Only has "marginal" 40 time around 4.65 (Wilson about 4.5). I would rate him as an intriguing prospect.

I think it is going to be a hell of a battle between Wilson, Barber, and Nolan.

I doubt Wilson runs a 4.5, at this point in his career. But, he probably plays quicker than Nolan because he sees the field and can react quicker.

The offseason between a player's 1st and 2nd season is usually when the most progress is seen. I'm crossing my fingers on Nolan, because the Texans don't have a lot of depth at safety. And their luck in grabbing safeties off the waiver wire is bound to run out.
 
Nolan has an up hill battle to make the roster this season because he's still essentially a rookie 7th round draft pick. If he can make the roster then we can talk about him eventually competing for meaningful playing time on defense.

Really? I would think he's got an inside track. The Texans will carry at least 4 safeties and Nolan can be no less than 4th on the depth chart, at this point.

The 40 time of any safety is absolutely meaningless. The better your instincts the faster a safety plays.

Did you pay any attention to the quotes from Kubiak about Nolan?
 
I'm just happy for Nolan and his comeback after being on IR in 2009, his rookie year in the league. That says a lot about a player and his determination to make the effort and sacrifice to succeed in the NFL.

Agreed. After seeing some of his college stuff, I am not to worried about him. He has that nose for the ball and seems to always be in the right place. Its not going to be as easy as he had it in college, but he should be pretty decent.

Coaches say a lot of things about players that eventually get cut in TC at this time of the season. Did you pay any attention to any of Nolan's play last season? That's right... you didn't see any of it.

I never knew what he was IR'd for last season until I read it somewhere yesterday. I was just assuming he was shelved to learn and get better while keeping him from being snatched up by another team.
 
got another mention today from kubiak. im trying not to get too excited

Texans head coach Gary Kubiak
(on the cooler weather and today's practice) "Golly, it's nice. It's like December in Houston. Yeah, it's a nice break, but we had some good work. Had some pretty good days this week. Once again, covering some situational football and had some guys doing some really great things. Guys that stood out today: (CB) Glover Quin, and (SS) Troy Nolan are really standing out and doing some really good stuff."
