That just wouldn't be right... would it???

Considering the money that's tied up in Johnson and Walter, I doubt the Texans will be willing to compete with free agent suitors if Jones is unrestricted next year. Jones will have earned the right to pursue the biggest contract he can get, and the Texans made their choice with Walter.

I'd like to see JJ stay a Texan, but these days in the NFL (and pro sports in general), never count on a player to stay anywhere forever.
 
This was one reason why I thought it would be a good idea to draft a WR in this draft. I didn't think I our depth at WR would hold for so long. We drafted Dorin Dickerson so that was good but I would've loved to see Jordan Shipley over here also.

Hopefully Jacoby makes it happen for us. There's still a side of me that blames our second loss to Jville on him because he didn't know how to make it on time to the team flight. I think this year we will see a more mature Jacoby and he will be the reason a guy like Andre Davis will have to leave.

I think Martinez is the odd man out this year. He barely made the team last year, I think it came down to him and another at the end. They may put Dickson on PS for this year and have your WRs

I thought he was suspended for a game for being late or missing a team meeting?

KW got a 5 year that totals 21 million with 8 of it guaranteed. All things considered that's a pretty cap friendly deal.

For Jones to get a big time contract elsewhere he's going to have to make plays from at best, the 3rd WR slot. While he made big plays last year, he's still inconsistent and will have to prove that he can make big plays on a consistent basis before he can command big money.

I think we'll be able to afford his next contract.

What if JJ decided he has to buckle down because he has a contract coming up ? If he has to leave , it's on him for deciding to buckle down after they resigned Walter .
 
Funny because this kind of contradicts todays article....of course he has to live up to the work talked about here. I think he is the 2nd biggest threat on the team when he plays to the his potential

Texans coach Gary Kubiak is expecting fourth-year receiver Jacoby Jones to compete with Kevin Walter for a starting job this season.

“Whatever their plans are, I know it'll be big and it'll be fun,” Jones said.

Jones has been one of the Texans' bright spots during the first two weeks of organized team activities. This time last year, he timidly dropped passes and often looked confused during practice. Jones said he would blame his mistakes on teammates. He almost constantly wore a face of frustration, and he said he knew it was hampering his ability.

“I was kind of a mess,” Jones said.

But something changed, and Jones was suddenly a different player. During this year's OTAs, he has not only verified his place as one of the league's best return men but also shown the potential to be a big-play receiver.

I have posted that this should be JJ's year and think he will supplant as #2 WR. The kid is just too good and if he has matured, he could be an AJ type. He will be a Texan as long as he does more than "flash" the skills. I would not be surprised if his stats are mentioned in negotiations with AJ's new uncle er agent. I AM NOT saying he will replace Johnson so don't freak and pm me. WRs and RBs should have a great year.

I agree badboy. Jacoby was an unpolished WR coming out of Lane College. That selection indicated we liked his upside, his ability to immediately contribute on special teams and that we were willing to take the time to develop him. I think that's exactly what we've seen.

I think the key here is that we've witnessed his growth during each season here. It sounds like he has or is about to have his head screwed on straight, getting past placing blame on other people and stepping up and taking care of his business. This could be a HUGE year for him and in turn, I think we'll reward him with a contract extension. He's a BIG, FAST receiver and can be an absolute weapon for our team as we advanced into our playoff years.

The key for him is getting the mental aspect down. If he can become an NFL player, he's going to find huge success. All I've seen from him is a kid out of college enjoying playing pro ball. He can't be doing anything off the field to may get him in trouble (being late, banned substances, etc). If JJ had Cushing's love for competition and the game, he'd be a pro bowl WR this season.

True. I'm not one on here that is known for optimism or being on the Sunshine side of things but his stats for last year and how he ended the season makes him someone that can have a big impact. I'm just saying that if he can take another step he is a hard guy to cover with AJ out there. His talent level is huge with his head on straight...the x factor...same article quote

After catching three passes for 81 yards and zero touchdowns in 2008, he made 27 receptions for 437 yards and six touchdowns and had a team-best 16.2 yards per catch. Of the eight games in which he made at least two receptions, he scored touchdowns in six of them. Jones gives much of the credit for his improvement to a more mature approach to the game.

I think the only numbers AJ and his agent need to mention are his own.

I don't think JJ is physical enough to be considered an AJ type player. I do think however, he more favorable compares to Reggie Wayne with an ability to contribute in the return game. I don't think that's all that bad.

I think JJ is going to make it hard to not go 3 WR sets this year if we get decent protection up front. If JJ steps it up and we get some decent production from our running game. Cushing there or not this offense is going to make it tough for opposing teams period.
 
Have to disagree with AJ on this one. If JJ has a big year I think the Texans will sign him to a deal like Walter's.

I would have to agree with you. If JJ continues to improve in reliability as per last year's trend, he will be going nowhere. But if JJ slips back to old patterns, he will be also be going nowhere......at least not with the Texans.
 
Yeah, I don't think the Texans are in a position where they can afford to let big time playmakers walk. If Jacoby proves himself as a bonafide weapon this year, I think that the Texans would pay the man.

If he doesn't play up to the level expected of him then he won't command as much money anyways.

He's making third round money. And he likes it here. It's not going to take a whole lot to make the guy happy. End of the first round money with the money up front will Make J.J. a very happy camper. At least it should. Of all the things to worry about, this should be on the bottom of the list for 2011.
Everyone wants to get paid. But if the man offers you more money than your family has seen in several generations in one lump sum, you do the deal and be happy. At least I would.

Oh I think that if they offer J.J. a contract with three or four million up front and the rest spread out over several years, they will sign. Andre Johnson is in his seventh year ? all of those bangings on all of those slants eventually will catch up with him. He was spitting up blood last year after one excursion. Remember ? He is a rare sized athlete, but the NFL eventually folds them all. J.J. has the size and speed, if not the brains yet, to eventually be the teams #1. You don't let that walk. And I believe he will be very happy to secure his families future with a fair veteran WR contract. He won't find the opportunity anywhere else that he has here. As Old Miss posts he is one season away from being in a position to be very well paid pro football player. By the time Andre Johnson hangs them up, J.J will be in a position to take over the reins. He's not going to find that opportunity or that contract potential anywhere else in the league.

I agree, I would have a hard time seeing him get past a Cincy, Detroit or Rams type team on the waiver wire.

Washington Redskins

They run the same offense, they do not have a top WR and JJ would be one of their starters if the new reports are correct about his new maturity. IIRC the OC there knows JJ...
 
The Texans tried to trade Jacoby to Washington last offseason, and the
'Skins told the Texans to go fly a kite. Lucky for us, huh?

If Jacoby Jones win the #2 job in which I think he will win the job they can always trade Kevin Walter or just keep all 3 of them due to the fact the Kevins contract is cap friendly. Jacoby brings that home run threat opposite Andre Johnson.

Yeah, I don't think Walter's contract is hefty enough to keep from re-signing Jones. Though if Jacoby's numbers project out from his 2009 totals, he could be looking at a major payday. From TexanChick's Chronic Blog and interview with K.C. Joyner:

KC: "Kubiak's got the right idea with getting the ball to Jones more often. Jones didn't see enough passes to qualify last year (only 36 targets) but he did a fantastic job on the passes he was thrown. Here are his totals by route depth


Short (1-10 yds) - 17 att, 13 comp, 86 yds, 5.1 YPA
Medium (11-19 yds) - 11 att, 10 comp, 210 yds, 19.1 YPA
Deep (20-29 yds) - 4 att, 3 comp, 96 yds, 24.0 YPA
Bomb (30+ yds) - 3 att, 1 comp, 45 yds, 15.0 YPA


To put the vertical totals into perspective, consider that the league leader in vertical YPA last year was Robert Meachem with a 17.1 mark. Jones needs to see more snaps at WR. Which is why the selection of Holliday as a return specialist is so important. Take that burden off of Jones (while maintaining a top return unit), and this offense could not only run up yardage totals, but the scoreboard.

I think thats a great idea. If JJ shows some consistency he would be a great 2nd. What do you guys think we could get for Kevin? Im thinking a 2nd round pick, or am I floating down the whiskey river? and if dickerson pans out,(43.5 inch verticle is insane) which it's going to take a while, we could take alot of the pressure of AJ and wreck havoc on opposing teams.
 
I'll agree that Walters is much more dependable than JJ... But JJ gives us something Walters does not. Another playmaker on the field.

I like Walters, but we are much dangerous with AJ & JJ on the field.

IF JJ has a break out year, and IF Tate does what we want him to, and IF Slaton is fully recovered, and IF the O-line holds up......well we could be looking at a very scary good offense.

They are different players. Walter is a better all around WR, with superior hands, blocking, route running, and things like that. JJ is a much more dynamic talent. With the speed and agility to make you pay for every catch he makes. At any time he could score. Thats the big difference.

It would be a big mistake to put Dorian on the practice squad. I think the only thing to do is cut Andre Davis or David Anderson...AJ, JJ, KW, DD and either DA or AD give us the best WR corps.

AJ, KW, JJ, DA, DD. AD is gone. Makes more money than his production. DD is a little more flexable.
 
If JJ keeps his fires lit and focus sharp his (JJ's) speed will allow AJ to get deep more often. I hate that we have to use AJ for 3 yard dinks and hope his great strength and heart gets him 8-9 yards. That is just more wear and tear he does not need. We have Walter and OD to work the middle and maybe Slaton getting a few in the slot. We could have the best 3 WRs in NFL and Davis and Anderson to battle it out. I do not wan to trade Kevin unless it is a great trade offer.

Those short dinks to AJ have been greatly reduced since Matt Schaub became the QB. In 2006, Johnson averaged 11.1 YPC with a YAC of 4.5 yards. That means that on average, AJ caught the ball 6.6 yards downfield. Fast forward to 2009, where Andre's YPC jumped up to 15.5, with a 5.3 YAC. Johnson is now receiving passes 10.2 yards downfield, a 35% increase since '06.

Which is good for reducing the wear and tear on Johnson. And for increasing the Texans overall success.

Everyone knows where I stand on this issue.

Jacoby Jones has homerun potential on each pass he catches, especially if he catches it in stride out in the open away from defenders.

He's a slant monster.

HOUSTON - Texans fans have seen his ability on special teams, but wide receiver Jacoby Jones wants more.

"I ended with some fire and I am hungry and I can feed off that," said Jones. "I have a chip on my shoulder heading into this year."
Last season, the 4th year man out of Lane College had 27 catches for 427 yards and 6 touchdowns. Those were all career highs and he accomplished those numbers while picking up tips from one of the best along the way.

"Andre Johnson would always tell me to study the game and it will help you out a lot," said Jones.

"He bothers me a lot and I treat him like a baby brother," said Johnson. "A lot of times when he gets on my nerves, I get a little serious with him to run him off, but he comes right back."

But it’s that persistence which Johnson says has paid off for Jones.

"He’s grown so much as a player and he has a lot of talent," said Johnson. "I think he is going to continue to get better and better and he is going to do a lot to help this team."

"You know there are a lot of guys that don’t have those players to look up to so he better make sure he takes advantage of it," said head coach Gary Kubiak.

Jones has done just that and he thinks the Texans are destined for something special.

"When we get going we are some Houdini’s man," said Jones. "We can make magic and that’s what we plan on doing this year, we plan on having some fun."
