Chris Henry, Jerimiah Johnson

Anybody hear anything about these guys yet? Are they even at OTAs?

Havn't heard. I was excited about getting both Johnson and Foster as undrafted free agents last year. If I remember correctly, wasn't JJ injured most of the year and sitting on the practice squad?

As far as them being at OTA, I have no idea... but the both should be. I think Tate, Slaton and Foster are locks to make the 53 man roster and all contribute throughout the year. RB may have been a weakness for us a month ago....heck it may still be, but I like the fact that we've got 3 RB's that I like a lot and we know they're the top 3 (barring injury). At least that's a little comforting.

Kubiak has mentioned full participation except for a couple of injuries so those guys are there. I am fine with the fact no one is talking about our 5th and 6th RBs

OTA's give fans little info. I think we will be very pleased after training camp barring injuries. Come on June 1st let's see who gets waived that we could use.

June 1st isn't going to be particularly significant this year. Maybe some RFA has their offer withdrawn but the normal cap ramification significance to June 1st doesn't apply this year. Each team can designate two guys as June 1st cuts even if they release them earlier and I don't think any team has done so.

The Atogwe sweepstakes my be opened. I think that's about it.

Agreed & probably a lot like Rockets free agency chances, mighty slim. Still it is one more thing to look forward to.

Could care less about Henry, but I am interested on any word if Johnson is completely healthy. I think if he is it's possible he could push for Moats spot.

Call me crazy but I think Foster isn't ever giving up his #1 spot. Just looks like he's worked the hardest.

I'm not going to call you crazy. There was talk around draft time that his 3 good games were just a fluke but it didn't seem that way to me. GK is going to go with who produces and has spoken positively about how Foster is producing in OTAs so far. Ben is going to have to blow GK away for him to get the 1 spot I think. That may mean that SS will be running with the 3s after he returns perhaps. Can't wait till camp when the pads are on. Going to be alot of competition at RB as well as several other spots. I, like others have mentioned prior, think there will be several vets looking for another team this summer.

If god will grace the Texans,

Foster/Tate as a combo with SS doing what he was drafted for.

Let's not get too carried away here though. Don't get me wrong I think it's absolutely great that Foster is excelling in OTA's and in my mind the more competition, the better. But then again at same time it's just that, only OTA's. I do understand that he performed well in his final 3 games, but to say that he won't ever relinquish the #1 spot before the pads come on or Ben Tate even steps into the huddle may be a bit premature.

Any one remember this guy? He also excelled in OTA's/Training Camp

Not a fair comparison....Chris Taylor to Arian Foster because Foster did it for more than one game, even if one of his games was the last against the Pats backups. But still....Pats backups are better than most and certainly better than Browns and their backups.

I think everyone is keeping a pretty level head about Foster actually, including Foster.

Fair enough, I guess I've just been dissapointed one too many times by runningbacks who seem "promising." I do agree that he had some pretty darn good games torwards the end, but I guess I'm just taking the wait and see approach to it. One thing is for certain, actually having a competition for once at this position is far from a bad thing.. if Foster is the one who will provide us with the effective run game then I'm all for it!

I'm kind of surprised Chris Henry is still a "Texan" to be honest.

Somebody loves him that's for sure. Potential only works if you are on the field and can achieve it. With Tate and Foster on the roster makes you wonder just what his role would be if he were available ? Three deep at "change of pace back" Ryan Moats, Steve Slaton, Jeremiah Johnson. three deep at #1 Foster, Tate, Slaton. after the dust settles they are going to be loaded at TE/FB. So just what is his role ? Somebody really loves this guy.

Personally I don't see Henry making it into camp for specifically that reason. He has all the potential in the world but with a few years under his belt and absolutely no production and very little if any PS eligibility left I just can't see Kubes keeping him with the kind of depth he has at that position on top of all the specialists that he's brought in that take up those valuable roster spots (i.e. Rackers and the new LS).

Had to dig a little but didn't want to start a new thread. So now we are into the pre-season, Moats was released, along with Chris Brown, Tate is done for the year, Foster looks like the #1 with Slaton best used out of the slot in 3rd down situations. That leaves Jerimiah Johnson & Chris Henry on your Houston Texans 53 man roster (think you need at least 4 backs).

Got to say Jerimiah looked impressive to me in his first pre-season game, realize it was against 3rd/4th stringers but liked the way he worked downfield, good footwork, ball security & seemed like he has added some serious weight & muscle. I remember him being a smaller back @ Oregon maybe 5-9 205, now he has bulked up to 218 & looks every bit of it. Chris Henry also seems better prepared, more into the scheme of things, could be decent short yardage back, must improve his blocking skills however.

Commented in another thread that Johnson did look good, and while Henry looked average or below, even if he'd looked good, there would be every reason to believe it was an illusion based on past experiences.

As kind of extreme as it sounds, I don't care if Foster takes another snap all pre-season. The only thing that could cause him to lose the starting job at this point is injury.

I'd love seeing Johnson show his stuff behind our #1s, and against the Saints and Cowboys #1. Maybe he'll fall flat on his face, but no matter how much he excels or sucks, we're better off knowing about it now.

I also think Slaton needs more of a chance to acclimate himself back to contact. I don't see him as even a viable #2 behind Foster, but I do see him as a potentially productive situational back, and someone who can allow Johnson to grow into the finer points of the backup role (if that's what he ends up earning based on the remainder of preseason).

RB comments in order of how I think the depth chart looks like currently:

Foster is our dude.

I think Slaton is moving from potential stud to place holder. I really do.

Chris Henry is going to make the team as a backup/mac truck on special teams. Get used to it now. Seems like a guy who is consistently on the verge of "getting it" but never did.

JJ has his shot. He knows for sure now that what he does is going to get a loooooooong look from the coaches. Tear it up young man!!!

I think all 4 make the team, first 3 active with Jeremiah inactive. If Slaton sucks or gets himself injured again Jeremiah is up and running.

JJ with his 33 yds on 5 carries takes up exactly where he left off in college:

Jeremiah Johnson

Career Rushing: 349 Att, 2336 Yds, 6.7 Avg, 30 TD
Career Kick Returns: 30 Ret, 626 Yds, 20.9 Avg, 0 TD
Career Scoring: 31 TD, 1 2PM, 188 Pts

And NO fumbles.

Now all he has to do to complete his package is totally nail down his pass blocking.............and that will happen by the beginning of the season.

I have to give Steve Slaton the benefit of the doubt on that fumble at the goal line. It was his time to play but, normally he wouldn't have been the RB in that goal line situation. Steve is barely 200lbs and is not a goal line RB. I'm pretty sure Kubiak and his crew know that its best to use Steve in 3rd down situation and get him in space. Since Tate is out for the year, I'm content to stick with Foster, Slaton, Johnson and Henry because each of them bring a little something different to the table.

Have we ever discussed why Jeremiah Johnson wasn't drafted?

Have we ever discussed why Jeremiah Johnson wasn't drafted?

Someone brought it up just moments ago. Medical flag. Texans got it fixed and put him on IR. Looks like he's recovered. He looked seasoned to me in that he let his blocking set up and followed it.

I'm still surprised we let Moats walk and for some reason held on to Chris Henry. I'd much rather see Moats and Johnson back there now that Tate is injured.

I don't know what the deal is. But Kubiak did not like Moats. If it weren't the absolute last thing he could possibly do, it seemed like he didn't want the man on the field.

I don't understand, have no idea why.

But if Kubiak wasn't going to let him play, I'm glad he's gone somewhere they will.

As far as Chris Henry goes, I'm excited about seeing him play in this system. I know what the word is on him, but I want to see him in this system, I think he'll be special.

I liked the Chris Henry run where he went low with the defender and ended up getting the better of it. Aside from that, we'll have to see what he does in the next two games.

He popped his shoulder out during his senior year (with an ACL a year before). He came back the rest of his senior year to put up great numbers, consistent with preinjury. Even so, the shoulder was of most concern at the time of draft.

He is known for a mean stiff arm (which is how he probably popped an already injured shoulder.

Moats had issues with pass protection. Kubiak didn't like him back there because he was afraid he was going to get Matt killed.

The knock against Jerehmiah out of Oregon was that the Ducks played the spread shotgun.

And they employed the ZBS for JJ to run out of that shotgun spread.
Furthermore, what JJ ran out of was mostly the outside zone play.
Let's say he lines up on the left side of the QB in the shotgun.
The O-line would go right, and JJ would go with them until he finds a hole.
He was a whole lot more effective when the run becomes a stretch play all the way to the outside.

The second knock was the way he carried the ball: away from the body.
Looks pretty scary.
(CND, I am not sure about no fumble. I don't know if I have time to go back and rewatch all the games, and I would rather not. They don't record fumbles in college football hardly. The only website that I find trustworthy is the official site, but you have to dig in the game by game play to find that.)

Thirdly, JJ was not asked to block much in that offense.

I don't know how to search the thread that I had last year about Jerehmiah Johnson; there were some more infos in there.

76Texan,

Is this the THREAD that you are looking for?

I don't quite know how to describe it... Slaton/Pat White operated out of the shotgun spread as well, but it was different from Masoli/JJ and the supporting cast at Oregon.

The Mountaineers used more two-back sets than the Ducks and they ran inside more with the RB.
And Slaton was used in pass-blocking more than JJ.

McClain's article from last year explains why Johnson is still a good value despite being undrafted:

Source.

Six games into his junior year with the Ducks, he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Playing behind Jonathan Stewart, who would become a first-round pick by Carolina, Johnson finished with 344 yards rushing and five touchdowns.

As a senior last season, Johnson suffered a dislocated right shoulder but continued to play. He wore a shoulder brace but totaled 1,201 yards and 13 touchdowns.

In his four seasons at Oregon, Johnson averaged 6.1, 6.3, 6.4 and 7.1 yards a carry but didn’t get drafted.

“A lot of people ask me why I didn’t get drafted,” Johnson said. “It had to do with injuries. Teams don’t want to put a lot on a player who’s been hurt. I respect that.

“But I played with this (dislocated) shoulder the whole season. I popped it back in without any help. It’s an injury a lot of people thought I couldn’t come back from.

“I played with the brace for five games. It was tough. I tossed it away because I felt comfortable without it. I was running well and still able to use a stiff-arm. It’s a matter of keeping it strong and keeping up the rehab on it.”

Johnson, a Los Angeles native, showed NFL scouts and coaches an example of that toughness in the first day of practice at the Senior Bowl. He wasn’t wearing the brace.

“We were doing pass protection,” he said. “A guy came on strong, and I took him on, and my shoulder popped out. I went down to a knee and popped it back in. Coach asked if I was ready to go, and I told him to put me in for the next rep, and he did.”

Johnson (5-9, 220) talks about popping his shoulder back in matter-of-factly. At some point, he’s going to need surgery.

“It’s not really agony that I feel,” he said. “It feels like my arm goes dead. When I pop it back in, I get the feeling back in two or three minutes. ...

“I’ve got it down to one try. It’s like I told my teammates at Oregon: As long as there’s nothing wrong with my legs, I’m good to go.”

He got surgery in the offseason.

All this stuff has been out there for over a year but he was sort of forgotten about on IR by everybody. I think the Texans knew they robbed the bank post-draft by signing Foster and Johnson. I hope they keep it up. We're happy to be "deep" at RB but remember those Denver teams always had another good back stashed away somewhere. That's going to be us in the near future.

I figured I'd be optimistic .

JJ runs like Priest Holmes

Arian Foster like Eddie George

Chris Henry like Hershel Walker

Slaton like Butterhands Jones or Kevin Faulk

This kid reminds me of Tashard Choice. Kubes better move him up the
depth chart. He's tough as nails.

Last year, a co-worker had just moved to Texas from Tennessee, and when I told him that Houston had taken Arian Foster undrafted, he told me that we should have high expectations of him.

edit: I just rewatched the Texans/Cardinals game. I didn't know JDB got sacked because Chris Henry totally missed his block. We can't rotate him in until we know he can protect Schaub.

Which is exactly why we have preseason games. They'll watch that play, and point out what was done wrong, and how to correct it.
