Just 3 years out of being a top 15 pick and he's already looking for a new deal. Is he worth it? Maybe, but it's just upsetting how the business part of football seems to take over.
...the NFL makes an inordinate amount for their worth (thanks to fans such as myself), and that the players deserve their fair share. So whenever a contract negotiation comes up with a player demanding an inordinate amount for their worth (in this case, Revis is worth every penny imo) I have to remind myself that....
I understand your sentiment and can sometimes get a little caught up in hating, or rather being jealous in my case, of the insane amount of money some of these professional athletes demand, but something that not a lot of us realize is that they have a ~5-10 year window in most cases to make their money for the rest of their lives. Too many professional athletes don't have or care about a college degree or will have a degree that once their athletic career is over won't lend itself to any job openings if they need a job. We can blame the players or the system or whatever else, but it's a fact that many players have to earn what they want to live on for the rest of their lives in their short playing days, so can we really blame them for wanting as much as they can get? Of course there will always be publicity appearances and other things like that, but for a high number of players, they simply fade away into the background.

Sure, the NFL makes a ton of $ off the players but who is the more important factor? If you had the infrastructure in place but XFL talent players, would we still watch? Maybe. If the infrastructure was that of the Arena Football League but we had NFL quality players would we watch?
I don't know. I wonder how much of what we see if based on the player's abilities and how much is based on the infrastructure of the NFL?
What do you think?

Hell the NFL couldn't even sustain NFL Europe & i'm willing to bet noone can name more than 5 players playing in the canadian football league right now. There's really only 1 discernable reason for that...b/c the quality of players aren't as good as the NFL players.
That sounds as if they arent capable of getting a regular 9-5 like the majority of Americans ....
Too bad we dont compensate our teachers as well as we do our entertainers ....
We have some ****ed up priorities.
the only reason the NFL has the players they do, is because of the money they generate. If (as Awtysst suggests) those markets had the money and infrastructure the NFL has, they could easily compete for the players... and the market. The NFL just has such a huge leap on everybody, that it isn't even close. Remember, ESPN wouldn't even talk about XFL games...
On another note, what do you think of the quality of Canadian, NFL Europe, & XFL players compared to that of the NCAA Football. Surely it has to be on par, if not better... but there is already such an infrastructure in place, these other leagues don't stand a chance.
Revis will have to settle for less. Mr. Manning is only getting 20 million/year.
The Indianapolis Star suggests that Peyton Manning's new contract could fall in the "five-year, $100 million neighborhood."
The extension is expected to be finalized "in the next few months." $20 million per year would make Manning the richest player in NFL history, which the Colts have no problem with. The signing bonus could be in the $40M range.
He said he's not trying to get all the money he can because he understands the team needs to try and sign other players, he's just looking for what's fair.
Jets Revis sits out some plays in protest
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP)Darrelle Revis(notes) contract issues are giving him a headache.
The New York Jets All-Pro cornerback sat out some plays during practice Monday in protest of his stalled negotiations after initially saying he wasnt feeling well.
I was just a little lightheaded today, a hamstring pull, too, Revis said with a chuckle. Nah, were going through it right now. Theres some things right now and were starting to get serious. Theres two different opinions going on, and Im going to do whats best for me and my family.
Revis promised last week he would participate in the teams mandatory minicamp beginning Monday. But toward the end of the first practice, he told defensive backs coach Dennis Thurman his head was bothering him and went to the sideline.
It was something just to let them know I can play, and I cannot play, Revis said. Thats what it is.
Coach Rex Ryan first defended Revis, saying hell never question a player who says something is bothering him physically.
When they tell you something is not right, you believe them to be a man of their word, Ryan said. I believe Darrelle would be that way. Now if hes pulling a fast one on us, hes pulling a fast one on us.
Now if he’s pulling a fast one on us, he’s pulling a fast one on us.”
Honestly, I just don't know what the Jets are trying to do here. Sure, you start every contract negotiation with a lowball offer, the player starts with a big number, and ideally, you can meet somewhere in the middle. He is due to make $1 million in the fourth season of his six-year rookie deal, and wants to be the leagues highest-paid cornerback.
But zero dollars guaranteed? Why? The Jets, a lot of people feel, are poised for a run at the Super Bowl. Revis is a key part of that. You're going to alienate him, for what reason exactly?
It's like going into a pawn shop, seeing a $5,000 watch you want, and saying, "Rick, I'd like that watch, but instead of giving you $5,000 for it, how about I just poke the Old Man in the eye, you give me $20, and then I take the watch?" It's just not a sound negotiating tactic.
I would have started at the DR-Atlanta rate and gone up a bit.
Bob Glauber of Newsday reports that the Jets are willing to add six years to Revis' existing deal, which pays out more than $21 million over the next three seasons. The end result could average $12 million per year and the total value would "approach $100 million or more."
