HOUSTON - The Houston Texans announced today the signings of third-round draft pick RB Vernand Morency and fourth-round selection WR Jerome Mathis. Morency and Mathis are the fourth and fifth 2005 Texans draft picks to sign with the team.

Morency (5-9, 212) was taken by the Texans with the 73 rd overall pick in the 2005 draft from Oklahoma State University . The Texans acquired the pick from the Dallas Cowboys by trading former sixth-round pick QB Drew Henson (March 19, 2004). Morency was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 1998 Major League Baseball draft, and didn’t begin his college football career until 2002. He is coming off a breakout season at Oklahoma State in which he rushed for 1,474 yards on 278 carries, scoring 12 touchdowns. His 2,661 career yards rank eighth on the school’s all-time career list.

Mathis (5-11, 181) was taken by the Texans with the 114 th overall pick out of Hampton University . Mathis, who registered the fastest recorded 40-yard-dash time in the entire 2005 Rookie Scouting Combine (4.26), accounted for 4,541 all-purpose yards in his college career, appearing in only 35 games – an average of 129.7 yards per contest. His 21 total touchdowns rank second most in school history and his 26.4 yards per catch stands as the all-time NCAA Division I-AA record. Mathis was also the 2003 and 2004 NCAA East Regional Champion in the 200 meters.

Morency and Mathis, join fifth-round pick C Drew Hodgdon, sixth-round pick SS C.C. Brown, and seventh-round pick LB Kenneth Pettway as members of the 2005 draft to have signed with the team.

I think those two were very important to get in camp on time. It seems to me they have the most to learn. Rushing the QB and tackling runners are pretty much the same in college and the pros. Our D is most complicated for the LB's.

On the other hand, Mathis has a big leap to be made from his college days and Morency has multiple tasks to learn.

Let the countdown to kickoff begin!!

All we need now is for TJ to sign. What kind of money do you think he will get?
That may be part of the problem. If the picks in front and behind his "slot" haven't reached agreements yet, it may be harder to pigeon-hole his contract at the right price.

Probably American Dollars. They usually are green, and have pictures of dead Presidents. I doubt he would be interested in Pounds, Yen, Marks, Francs, Lire, Schillings, and Pesos although I'm not his agent. I'm sure we will find out soon what kind of money he will be getting. If it's not dollars, my Yen is on Pesos.

hey Porky,

How are those American dollars given to TJ? Do the put them in a brief case or a sack with a "$" symbol on it? :)
