Shelley Smith OG Colorado State- 6th round selection

I am just so angry I wanted them to grab another TE. That is it, I am turning in my fan card and I am now going to only root for teams who draft according to how I feel they should draft.
 
This is the first pick this year that actually has me rolling my eyes... but then again, at least it is a need position.

This is possibly the best pick in the draft for us, value wise.

Fastest and strongest guard in the combine.

Think Bruce Campbell with no hype and CSU connections.
 
yeah the texans were really high on sage steele and cindy brunson but shelley
smith's ability to be both an anchor and a sideline reporter is was led then to pick smith!
 
Nothing like 6th round CSU scrubs to make our very weak O-line better. Very disappointed that this franchise has never put any importance on the O-line. I just shake my head in disbelief.

That's 4 bad picks in a row when this draft started off so well, simply amazing. It must require alot of effort to screw up this bad.

Just what I read about him.

People wanted a OG, we got one that fits the ZBS perfectly, plays with attitude and is a real athlete.

What more can you ask for from a late round pick?

That and I love interior lineman.

Caldwell was my man crush from last draft too.
 
After all the hard work and diligence of rounds 1-5, Kubiak goes and selects a guy from CSU in the 6th.

He took care of business in rounds 1-5, and smoked a cigarette after drafting a CSU guy. Then promptly fell asleep without even cuddling with Smith.
 
Shelley Smith and Cole Pemberton started alongside one another for three years at CSU and in the East-West Shrine Game in January.

Now, they're heading into the NFL together, hoping to earn roster spots with the Houston Texans.

Smith, a 6-foot-3, 300-pound guard, was selected Saturday by the Texans in the sixth round of the NFL Draft, while Pemberton, a 6-7, 315-pound tackle, agreed soon after the draft ended to a free-agent deal with the texans

Smith was the only player from a school in Colorado selected in this year's draft, going to the Texans with the 18th pick in the sixth round, No. 187 overall. His stock in the draft went up after he attended the combine, where he ranked among the top five offensive linemen in three of the six agility tests. His 34-inch vertical leap was second-best, his 9-foot, 4-inch broad jump was fourth-best, and his 5.11-second 40-yard dash was the fifth-best.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak, whose sons Klint and Klay played with Smith at CSU, said Smith can play either guard or center in the NFL.

"He'll be fine; he'll make the team," CSU offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Pat Meyer said. "He's just got to stick to it and be himself."

Pemberton was considered a possible seventh-round draft choice but now gets a chance to earn a spot on a Texans roster that has four other former CSU players on its roster - receiver David Anderson, tackle Mike Brisiel, tight end Joel Dreesen and defensive end Jesse Nading. John Benton, a former CSU line coach and co-offensive coordinator, is the Texans' offensive line coach, Fort Collins native and ex-CSU player Rick Dennison is the offensive coordinator, and Marc Lubick, a CSU assistant for the past five seasons, is a first-year offensive assistant with the team.

I am excited about Smith and the UDFA though. I think they both play with the certain nastiness this line needs.

Agreed. They would have had to give up the farm to move up and Take Earl Thomas or Iupati. they did what they always do draft players to create competition at the sore spots. I wanted Iupati in the worst way. I take this pick as a message to me not to panic. The o-line will be ok. If Mitchell and Dorin and Ben Tate work out, this will be a very rich draft. Bottom line is these players are the ones who will give us enough of a lift to win the division.
 
This guy is a good athlete. He's strong, fairly explosive, and has good size. In addition to that, he's been a 3-4 year starter. He has a lot of experience in the zone blocking system. And, despite struggling with an injury last season, he didn't give up any sacks... so, he's been productive. I don't know why he's a 6th round pick. But, based on that information, I would be very surprised if he isn't immediately a qualified backup and perhaps he can push one of these three interior guys.

If so, that's pretty darn good for a 6th round pick.

Out of all the offensive linemen at the combine, this shows his explosiveness.

34" vertical jump. Good enough for #2 at the combine.

9' 4" broad jump. Good enough for #4 at the combine.

5.11 40 yard dash. Good enough for #5 at the combine.
 
This guy has Kasey Studdard's nastiness (you've gotta have a mean streak with a name like Shelley) with the athleticism we covet for the ZBS.

Great value in the 6th round.
 
Admittedly didn't know much about this guy. I was hoping for a guy like Mike Johnson, but all I'm hearing is good things about him.

When I first heard of Smith, I was pretty ambivalent. I thought this was just a "we're picking a CSU player" pick (does any other team draft CSU players?!?), and probably a reach, but was happy to finally have an OL pick (plus, it was only a 6th round pick). However, after looking at him more, I'm starting to think this was a really good pick. It was not a reach (if any 6th round pick could be called a reach) - he was among the group of better players left on the board at the time. It was a position of need (to me, one of our biggest needs - I'm still upset we didn't address OL earlier in the draft). And, the CSU connection means that they are already more familiar with him than a general prospect - while this can lead to bias in selecting players, it can also be a benefit once they're here.

No, no, no.

It means much, much more than that.

CSU runs an offense set up by Alex Gibbs. This guy already has several years of experience... in our system. This guy is about as close to a plug and play situation as we're going to get. I seriously expect this guy to challenge for one of the guard spots and be an upgrade.

I'm very excited by this pick.
 
I'm excited about this pick. Sure jokes can be made about the school he played for, I get it. We pick up all the Bronco and Colorado St. castoffs. Whatever. But looking at it from a football player / positional need / draft value standpoint, what more could you ask for? Would everybody be excited about this if he had Alabama or Miami next to his name?

Guy fits the ZBS, has the nastiness we want in a player and has the athleticism to warrant the pick. It's a 6th round pick and we take a "flyer" on a guy who might provide depth to the OL (an area of need) as a young player and develop into a potential starter. There's not too many OG's in this draft with his 'skillset' that are as coveted by a team like the Texans.

It was very thin in the position, and we were very fortunate in our sixth round pick to get him. 6-3, 300 pounds, from Westview High School in Phoenix. Three-year starter. Captain. Has got a degree. He's got great toughness. He's athletic. He's got good lateral range with good C.O.D. (change of direction). He can strike and sustain his run blocks. He's got good mobility for a big interior kind of lineman, good in-line strength. He's got power to gain what we call movement off the line, so he'll come out and do that. We see this guy having a chance to soak at that position and eventually help us interiorly."
