Ravens Draft Party - Worst Party Ever

Second Honeymoon

Hall of Fame
ok, so imagine you are a Ravens fan. you are all geeked up for the draft and your at the official draft party. well the draft moves along and as things progress, you realize that Dez Bryant looks to be falling right in your lap. You can hardly hold back your enthusiasm and Dez keeps falling like a rock...right into your lap.

people start to get excited and the buzz sweeps across the convention room floor. people are already imagining having WR go from a big weakness to a strength with the addition of Boldin and Dez Bryant to the fold. Super Bowl dreams become closer to reality and you may have the next great WR in WR-starved Baltimore.

well you are just 2 picks away with New England standing between you and Dez. NE doesn't figure to take Dez due to their needs on defense and the fact that they have quality WRs already. The enthusiasm and anticipation just grows and the Ravens fans are in a frenzy.

well then Jerry Jones punks you and trades past you to grab Dez. PUNKED!! Did the Ravens even try and match the offer Dallas made? Did Belichik give them the cold shoulder or prohibitively price the cost of moving up because the Ravens are in the same conference and the team that embarassed them in Gillette Stadium? JJ just punked you, Ravens Fan.

so you get punked and lose out on Dez. you scramble for your pick sheet, take a few antacids, ask the waitress for another $8 beer, and you get ahold of yourself. just when you are about to pick and maybe get a quality player like Dan Williams, the word comes that you have traded out of the 1st Round altogether. There will be no 1st Round selection by the Ravens. You then realize that you will not be adding any player in the 1st Round and that the night was a complete waste of time, money, and energy. You settle your tab (always optional), boo at the screen, flip the bird one last time at Mel Kiper, and drive home in a drunken and bitter haze.

sucks to be you, Ravens fan.

Could have been the same at Reliant. With who was on the board at 20, part of my wonders if we tried to trade out.

oh yeah, luckily for Newsome he has a lot of goodwill and history of success built up in Baltimore that he can pull something like that and not get impaled by the fans. Lets just say Rick Smith's record isn't as good as Newsome's and we will leave it at that.

I think the night may have sucked due to anticipation and failure to be treated with a pick. However, you have to look at things on the bright side and why you are able to trade out of the 1st round to begin with - because your team is already good. They were picking late in the draft because they went to the playoffs and won a playoff game.

You already picked up Anquan Boldin so your receiving corp has already been improved. When the guy that you wanted wasn't there, your team simply said "there aint nobody here that makes our offense that much better who wouldn't be considered a reach, and who here really makes our defense better that isn't a reach?"

Now you are going into day 2 of the draft with more picks where alot of players are sitting right now who will be there for the right price.

Don't worry. You are okay.

I wouldnt have been upset had the Texans picked up a #2 and 3 to replace their first rounder - There are a lot of guy's left who could really help this team in the next two rounds. Getting two of them over anyone left on the board at 20 was probably the way to go.

I almost came to the draft party all the way from Austin but then I thought... what if we trade out? That's the drawback to breaking up the draft into 3 days.

with the 15th pick in the 2005 draft the houston texans select derrick johns ... err wait there's a trade.

despite knowing ahead of time, i dont think any draft party letdown is bigger than selecting mario over both reggie bush and vince young.

watching sean taylor and adrian peterson (and this year earl thomas) fall just infront of us is almost comical at this point.

Ha ha!! Funny write up man. And this is a great example of why this new prime time circus of a draft that they are doing this year is pathetic. Stick to the Saturday thing like they've done for years. I can only imagine at how bad those Ravens draft parties must have been last night.

Don't we have this same conversation every April?

The Texans were/will not likely to trade down unless they got a phone call, said phone call offered a fair deal and they felt they could get a similar player later in the draft.

I know most everybody knows this, I just don't get why everybody complains about the lack of a trade down nearly every draft.

Trading down is a whole lot easier said then done.

McClain reported there were offers for the pick, but none of them anywhere near what the Texans required to move down. They didn't want to lose Jackson, and moving more than 2 or 3 picks away was too risky. The offers didn't make it worth it

People complain when we trade down too. Remember the 2008 Draft when we traded down with the Ravens from the 18th pick to the 26th pick. There were people who were upset thinking that we should have taken Mendenhall or even Jenkins at 18 instead of trading down to get Brown.

Bottom line is that people get upset no matter what the Texans FO does, and that's just how it's always going to be when it comes to the NFL draft.

Indeed.

Im not upset at all with the player the Texans got in the first round. I might have had another rated a bit higher but they did fill the need I felt should be addressed in round one.

I'd have been happy with them moving up for Berry or Thomas ....

I'd have been happy with them moving back and gaining extra picks.

And Im just fine with the player they did get @ 20.

I'm fine with it as well since CB became the team's biggest need. I just wish they wouldn't have put themselves in a corner to where they had to get a CB or a RB and had tried to have grabbed someone in free agency to fill at least one of those needs. Jackson looks like he'll be a pretty good player though.

Corners tend to cost a fortune via FA ..... Just look at the crazy $$ D-Rob got from Atlanta. He's now the second highest paid corner in the NFL I believe. I'd rather have seen them make a move for Antonio Cromartie or someone similar than a FA.

I think Ahman Green scared them off from any of the RB's available and I cant say I blame them for not wanting to take a chance on a guy on the downside of a career in LT or Chester Taylor (tho he doesnt have the miles).
I still think they can find the back they are looking for either today in the 2nd or tomorrow in the 3rd .....
I did not see a "Feature Back" in this years draft class but I do see several guy's who could give them what they need in the running game - Tate , Gerhart , Hardesty and maybe Dwyer tho of that group I like him least.
I dont know how long Tate and Gerhart will last and would prefer either over the other backs still on the board. I expect Hardesty and Dwyer to be on the board when the Texans pick in round 3 so they still have some options.

I'd still like to see a DT a Safety and an interior OL taken along with one of the RB's.

To be fair I think the FO made a good run at trying to get Leigh Bodden here. Other than that there wasn't a whole lot of options to get better at CB via FA at that point. Still a possibility we might see another Vet brought in after June and Camp cuts.

Unfortunately as well the best options via FA were more close to the end of their career as opposed to the beginning. Bad experience with Green probably made the FO shy away from any older back.

I still think we can fill several needs at RB, OL,DL and FS. Some tough choices are going to have to be made though. That's the downfall of relying completely on the draft to build your team. It's going to take a while and you're going to be pigeon holed in at times.

Since next season is without a cap I expected them to be much more aggressive in FA. I suppose its easy for us to spend Bob's $$.

Bob showed he is more about money than improving the team. The salary cap excuse can not be used now. It was painfully obvious. We can't even give a veteran RB $10 million guaranteed so we don't have to be so need-oriented in the draft.

Bob let me down and he let everyone down, whether they know it or not. When we end the season with around 7 wins, maybe some people will wake up and realize that Bob is more concerned about money than fielding the best possible product. It was proven this offseason, once and for all.

Yeah, I think it was about 5 years ago when people on here were saying "We're finally free of the dead money and can really go after some free agents! Woo-hoo!"

And I was like, "Yeah, I bet we're gonna' see a lot of that. Not."

Year after year it's the same thing.

We couldn't nail down Cedric Benson. Nor Leigh Bodden. Nor even make a run at Thomas Jones. Wade Smith? Hell yeah we got that guy. LOL.

Now, what comes next is the people who say we have to save that money to take care of Mario Williams and Andre Johnson when the time comes.

OK, if we can't retain 2, 3 or 4 GOOD players ('Meco, Mario, AJ, Schaub) and still bring in mid-level free agents like Benson and Thomas Jones, then something needs changing.

But we're talking about the team that leaves Kris Brown on the field for the remainder of the season when the guy even shanks an extra point. We're talking about the team who decides Chris Brown is a viable option at running back.

This team, every year, has to make a mad dash at the end of the year to salvage the season so as to not sink to the bottom. This is a mirror reflection of how the team's stewards approach other aspects of management: Finally bringing in Rackers when we needed a warm leg during the season, drafting a RB in round 2 of this year's draft--A guy who has some serious legitimate credentials and isn't a diamond-in-the-rough.

The third pick was a HUGE defensive tackle. Because the ones we have are not doing the work that a DT should be doing, which hurts the DEs and the work THEY are trying to do.

This draft is proceeding in such a way that I think Smithiak is having some urgency about things.

LMAO at McClain's reporting!!!!!!!!!!

That goofy bastard barely knows which hole to pee out of...

I read the draft thread on one of the Ravens boards. They were so excited about the possiblility of getting Bryant. They were writing, yeah baby, six minutes to go and he's ours, then oh hell Jerry Jones is on the telephone.

I wouldnt have been upset had the Texans picked up a #2 and 3 to replace their first rounder - There are a lot of guy's left who could really help this team in the next two rounds. Getting two of them over anyone left on the board at 20 was probably the way to go.

We could have taken Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham so Kubiak could have had a project. :clown:
