We move back to 28!

Apparently, we've got our trade partner!

Chargers beat writer Kevin Acee believes that the team will use its first-round pick on a running back.
Assuming there's a tailback on the board worthy of the pick, of course. Acee suggests Fresno State's Ryan Mathews as GM A.J. Smith's top target.

I could see the Texans picking Ryan Mathews themselves @ 20. Depending on who's still there @ 20 .... It would likely take a sweet deal to get me to move.

Still not sold on RB @ 20.

If Thomas, Haden, Wilson are gone at 20, I'd be happy to move down to 28.....

And pick up Taylor Mays

Then Im fine with moving , those are the top three guy's I'd be looking at in the 20 spot unless one of the highly ranked prospects somehow falls.

But do you think Mays makes it past Dallas @ 27 ?

It's hard to say where Mays goes. If someone falls in love with his Protential, he could go before #20.

If people are scared off by last year he could go 2nd round.

You just never know.

I agree with Kiwitexansfan, if Earl Thomas, Kyle Wilson, and Joe Haden are all gone then yes I'd definitely make that trade. The trade down also depends on what compensation we get for it, I'm guessing a 3rd and 5th but I'd ask for a 2nd. San Diego is drooling to get Ryan Mathews and for my opinion they can have him. Mathews has a pretty extensive injury history and I'd rather have Ben Tate in the 2nd round anyway. Tate has no injury history, played in a much tougher conference against much tougher opponents, and was the only weapon on Auburns team so defenses knew he was getting the ball and they still couldn't stop him. He also blocks very well and can catch well as also.

I wouldn't mind moving back and picking up a third and drafting Brian Price, Kareem Jackson, Patrick Robinson, or Devin Mcourtey with the 28th pick. And then we could use that third round pick on an OG like Mike Johnson or a center like JD Walton or Matt Tennant.

It all depends on what they give us to move back.

According to the points, they'd need to do a tad more than just give us their third.

I'd love to have another 3rd in this draft.

I'd love to have another 3rd in this draft.

Judging by what the board mock draft has fallen like, I'm thinking the good talent is there through the early third round but by the time it gets to late third things are starting to dry up.

Or

There is a big talent disparity between early third and late third.

I don't know about that. I think there are still some really talented guys out there. Chris Cook just went. Spievey just went with the Charger's pick and I think he's a talented corner although that may have been a little early. Gerhart is still on the board. Dexter McCluster (WR), Mike Williams (WR), Reshad Jones (S), Arthur Jones (DT), Torrel Troup (DT)... probably lots of guys I don't even know. I'd like to have another pick in the late 3rd.

In one of my mocks that I plan on posting this weekend, I've got us trading down with SD.

In the deal, we swap 1st's (20 for 28), 2nd's (51 for 40), receive their 3rd (91) & give them their 6th (197) back. That's a point differential of +49 points for us. If they want Mathews, that seems like a fair deal to me.

With a high 2nd round pick, we should be able to snag Nate Allen (FS) & the extra 3rd should net us a quality player.

Apparently, we've got our trade partner!

I brought this up before that Houston could be making their love of Mathews widely known as a smoke screen to get San Diego to move up and get him. I really don't think the Texans want to spend their 1st round pick on a rb when they can get a good one in the 2nd or 3rd this year with little to no drop off in talent. There is no clear stud rb in this years draft.

I trust AJ Smith and the Chargers' talent evaluation. If the Chargers covet Mathews, the Texans should draft him.

Eh, the Texans have quite a few holes to fill. To me, it would be worth it to get the extra picks in such a deep draft class.

You have been doing a great job of selling me on Tate.

I think if Thomas, Haden and Wilson are all gone and you can get a third to move back 8 spots you do it. I just dont see any seperation among the RB's outside of the speed of Spiller and this team doesnt really need another small speed back.

Its pretty likely that Tate or Gerhart is available in round three.

I think 28/40 gets you better players than 20/51

Totally agree.

Smith has made it a point to emphasize the value of draft picks in this draft. I don't know if it has to do with how deep this draft class is or the labor negotiations, but not only would I not be surprised at us trading down, I almost expect it.

Moving back is always the way to go. So what if we miss out on Rayn Mathews, Kyle Wilson, or Dan Williams. There will be more good players available at 28.

Although if Earl Thomas, Mike Upati, Joe Haden or Taylor Mays are sitting there at 20 you might as well take one of them.

The thing is, why should the Chargers trade with us when they can trade with the Falcons to get ahead of us.

Why trade to a position higher than you need? Atlanta isn't going to take a RB. If Mathews is SD's target then we are the most likely trade target. Moving us takes us out of the market and puts them in control.

Hmm... OK. And if we won't trade with them, THEN they deal with the Falcons and take the guy they think we want. That makes sense.

With considerable depth at several of our need positions I think this draft and that scenario with SD makes the most sense. There are quite a few CB's and RB's that seem to be suitable that could be had with an extra pick in those first 3 rounds.

I'm not up on the points thing. 8 spots plus a 3 and what? A 7th? or does that tip the scale?

That sounds great and all, but who's to say they don't just offer something like that to the Falcons or Steelers and one-up us for Matthews. I would like to see them work with the Texans on this, but if I'm the Charger's GM, I know I will get a better deal from the team that doesn't need that player.

Bengals @ #21 may want Thomas or Wilson.

What if Houston really wants Mathews bad enough that they won't trade back with San Diego. Then San Diego loses out on the rb they wanted like the Texans did with DeAngelo Williams. The trade that didn't happen that you like to bring up. The difference in points is 25 on the draft value chart between Houston and Atlanta. Moving 1 spot in front of Houston guarantees them the rb they want. Of course this is all hypothetical. My line of thinking is jump to the spot in front of the team you think is going to take the player you're after. Atlanta may be very willing this year because they don't have a 2nd round pick.

I wouldn't mind a trade back, but if Earl Thomas is there I think we have to take him...

I don't really care for Kyle Wilson...In fact, I think that Ryan Matthews will be a better NFL player and I'd rather take him...Not impressed with Wilson...Looks like a 2nd or 3rd rd. prospect to me...

So, I don't know if I like the trade back scenario just yet...gotta see who's available

That's a simple question to answer. Using your question as the basis, if all 3 teams are asking for similar compensation, then you take the lowest pick. The reason SD would do this (assuming all 3 offers are of equal value) is because it would cost them less money to sign a player taken at the 20th pick versus the 19th or 18th picks. All things being equal, trading with us could save them several hundred thousand dollars. Last year, the difference between 20 & 19 was $1 million over a 5 year contract.

I wouldnt call any of them "Stud RB's" but they along with Tate are the best this draft has to offer.
Its quite likely that Tate and Gerhart could be had with a mid to late 3rd.

Points wise, our pick is 850 and the Chargers are 660. That's a difference of 190 points. So the Chargers would probably give us their 3rd rounder (#91) worth 136 points and another pick, maybe their 4th (#126) worth 46 points. These deals usually never equal out in points and personally I can't see a team giving up it's 3rd and 4th round to move up 8 spots in the 1st. So if they were going to trade, they may give up one pick this year and one next year, or give up one pick this year and a player off their team and/or cash. Just food for thought.

Okay so swap with us and give us Darren Sproles. This way you get the RB you want, we get a RB we could use, plus get the value we need at 28 and be able to get a bigger back in the 3rd and down.

Well the scenario I was responding to had us swapping firsts, swapping with their high 2nd pick, getting their third outright, and giving up the 6th we got for TJ. It ends up being +49 points for the Texans, which seems like a lot more than needed to make the deal happen, but if it has to do with the Texans being greedy because they could use Matthews too, then I think the SD GM would rather trade with the Falcons.

Gerhart is being overrated. Spiller and Mathews are very good RB's who could go in the first. But this draft lacks an elite prospect at the position.

And I agree that Tate and Gerhart should be a 3rd rd pick.

Well, if you look at the only measuring sticks we have (college stats) they are studs. We don't know on any player at any position if they will bust.

I don't know if Gerhart is overrated or not, but I do believe that he will be a pretty good player in the NFL...I kinda see him as a slightly more athletic Mike Alstott

I would love it if we picked him up

Thank you. I think it's reasonable to eat "points" and pick up an extra 3rd in a year like this where there is so much depth at positions of interest for the Texans. If that means a later round addition that's fine. Anything for more picks in a year like this is worth it to me. Even if it means passing on a guy like Mathews.

I think this is a GREAT move for the Texans! Plus an extra pick or two! I like a Ben Tate in the 2nd Rd. also! I'm not really sold on R. Mathews @ 20 ( think smoke screen in the Texans front office), & I don't think Kubes will draft one in the 1st Rd. I like the way you think!!!:ant:

agreed. Rather have Iupati since it appears that he has fallen a bit. However, Mathews fits everything required. Unless they covet one of the corners, which I don't, the slot, and cap hit are correct, you pull the trigger. You let all three compete for time. You go with the hot hand week to week. I see no down side here in terms of competition and dollars. You don't pass up perfect in the first round. Unless it's a Rickey Williams type offer, you pull the trigger on perfect. I don't see that, a block buster offer in this scenario.

So exactly how many roster spots do you believe are still available. My take is that anything drafted after the third round is pretty much practice squad fodder or will be on the street again in September. There aren't a lot of roster spots here anymore.

All these guys could be beaten out for a roster spot by a late round pick.

32 Bennett, Fred CB 6-1 200 South Carolina 4th

I believe if we can find a gem or two in one of those picks than I'm all for it! I think this is a good draft year to find quality players! Plus- the more competition the better! I'm trying to look at this situation as a glass "half -full"!:fans:
