Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Tribune, reports the Chicago Bears have released CB Nate Vasher.

Any reason why Chicago would let him go? Injuries? Dude has played at a high level when healthy. Any interests?

There's also Frank Walker who could be solid depth. His INT total is low but the numbers have been consistent over his career so you pretty much know what you would get:

Not sure the whole story but profootballtalk.com said that he only started 2 games last year but played in 15. He has been hurt a lot the past three seasons.

He's a Texas guy. Bring him in, give him a look, then sign him Rick! Do it. Do it.

Kffl reported that he played in all 16. I also saw reports that he was willing to play FS in midseason when they needed him to. If he could do that here, he would be worth it because dude can also return INTs as well as kicks.
 
wow, we gotta jump on this. Guy is a pretty good corner and it sounds like he was in the doghouse.
Some injury concerns but its another team's castoff so you can't expect a perfect situation. Probably worth the risk due to our current situation. Cut one of Rick's failed CB draft picks.

I wonder if the Texans would bring him in? Ok, let me do the Smithiak checklist on Vasher.

1. did he play for Denver? no.
2. did he go to Colorado State? no.

Conclusion: Texans are not interested in Nathan Vasher.

Vasher would be a great nickel/depth/FS-back-up signing. He's pretty redundant given Wilson's role, but given both of their injury histories, put them together and you have one whole good player.

Plus, he has starter experience which would be nice given the prominent roles of McCain and Quin on our defense.

I wouldn't get in a bidding war with anyone, but I'd definitely field him an offer.

Yeah, but you don't go into the season with just 2 CB's. He may not be a solid CB starter, but he would help fill the need at CB. Another thing, we need to plan to get another return man because next year Jacoby will be a free agent, and some team is going to give him a better offer than the Texans.

Not so fast I think this a make or break year for Jacoby.
 
Vasher is someone to consider, but after a couple years of injury, he is pretty far from the guy who was player near or at a probowl level.

Who said we only have 2 CB's? My point was, we've got plenty of backup type CB's on the roster already. We don't even have 2 solid starters on the team. Why would we want to sign injury prone CB's that were average in their best years when we've got Quin (who's still unproven to me. See Fred Bennett) and 5 unproven or career backups. We need starters.

Vasher's last average season was 06. What are the chances he picks that back up 4 years later?

Meh, if he does end up coming here it better be dirt cheap.

Yeah but he played all 16 games last year. He also was in talks with Chicago of moving to FS, stating that the only reason he felt he wouldn't be great at it is because he'd have to learn on the fly during the season.

Remember when he had the longest TD in NFL history for a while?

The Texans and Titans are cornerback needy, but it’s the Colts who rank as the best fit for him based on what the very smart Matt Williamson of Scouts Inc. told me Thursday morning.

"Don't love him. He isn't real fast and he isn't real big. Two problems for a CB. The Bears didn't do a real good job of getting after the QB this past season, but Vasher also didn't play all that well either. He is more of a short-area quickness guy, which was a pretty good fit with the Cover 2, but not as much in Tennessee or Houston. He was much more productive early in his career -- on very good defenses -- and probably inflated his name value more than his true play now indicates. He also has missed a lot of time with injuries, which could have directly led to his overall play falling off."

The Colts do need secondary depth after a purge that saw Marlin Jackson, Tim Jennings, T.J. Rushing and Aaron Francisco all become free agents after Indy didn’t tender them as restricted. Jackson signed in Philly where he’s going to convert to safety. Jennings signed in Chicago, where he’s surely part of the reason the Bears felt OK about parting with Vasher.

NFC North kingpin Kevin Seifert says the release came a year too late and that Vasher, who was productive early in his career, was already an “inferior player” at the end of 2008.
It will be interesting to see where he lands.

So what if it is a 'make or break year' for Jacoby, he's still not going to sign with the Texans next year for WR3-4/Returnman money. Some team is bound to offer him 4 years 15+ million hoping that he will make a good #2 WR. The Texans made a statement signing Kevin Walter as the #2 WR going forward, and it leaves little room for Jacoby to shine as a WR. He will be gone if he plays as well as he did last year and doesn't sustain a major injury.

Yep, cheap and a potential starter if all goes well in camp and he makes more competition at the position. That's a small risk I would take if I were Kubiak. Bring him in, evaluate him, sign him (pending a physical) for a little money and see how he does in camp. If he ends up sucking, cut him before the season starts and Bob will be out a couple hundred grand in a non-capped year. Whoopty-freakin-doo.
