Colts just released a RG (Ryan Lilja).. why hasn't he signed here yet?

Seriously,

A chance to pick up a relatively young guard (he's 28) from a division rival.. playbook anyone? Oh.. and did I mention he can play. He's not exactly what we're looking for in an OG.. by not exactly I mean he hasn't played for the Broncos.. but yeah.. I'm sure he'd like to play in the SB again with the Texans again soon.

Mike

I thought he was a LG not RG. Anyway, according to the numbers, he was #16 in terms of OG this year. I say bring him in for an interview. Only downside is he is 285lbs. May make him a good fit for the ZBS.

He's decent, but he's also rag-dolled quite often too. I'm not sure he'd be much of an upgrade from what we've got. We've already got a couple rag-dolls amongst our interior Oline.

Polian supposedly blames Lilje for the Colts SB loss. I don't know... the Colts seem to be pretty mad about the loss. Jeff Saturday came to Lilja's defense with no avail. Me thinks Manning has a lot to do with this decision here. Why not try to trade him? He was the starter for the Colts superbowl run and appearance. They wanted to make a statement with LiljaLs sudden release.

That very well might be the case. I'm sure there was a discussion between Polian and Manning at some time.

It'd be cool if our management had that thought process. Kris Brown would've been gone before that loss to Tenn.

No question about the intent to send a message, but that doesn't change the fact that with 5 starting O-Linemen to choose from, this was the one Polian (with or without input from Manning) chose to eliminate. Nobody's perfect regarding these type of decisions, but Polian's track record is far better than most.

Yeah, Lilja started on a Super Bowl winning O-Line, but he also missed an entire season with knee surgery, and last year was part of the 32nd ranked rushing offense in the NFL. He's lighter than any O-linemen who took the field for us last year, and he's played on a unit notorious for being finesse (and for having a QB who releases the ball in a matter of nano-seconds).

Maybe all this means he fits in very well with the Texans, and I fully recognize that being 10 pounds lighter than some of our current guys absolutely doesn't preclude him from being an upgrade, I just don't think he'd be a difference maker, and absolutely not somebody we should be outraged about if we don't end up signing.

I would blame Hank Baskett for not holding on to the ball before blaming anyone else on the Colts. It was right in his hands and he got butterfingers...

The thing that ticks me off about that play was that he probably makes that play like it was nothing if he's playing The Texans.

I had never heard about all of this. Never mind, I'm getting visions of Chris Myers Jr. in my head.

Above average is always good!

Ha!

Other than not really being that good, here's the likely answer.

According to Scout.com's Adam Caplan, free agent OG Ryan Lilja failed his most recent physical with the Colts.

That explains his release. On top of his knee problems, Lilja was also nursing a back injury the week before the Super Bowl. He may have to accept a one-year offer this offseason to prove that he can stay healthy and effective.
