Info from Demeco Ryans interview on Sirius today

1. He gave zero indication that he is having talks with the Texans about a long term deal.

2. Dunta is gone. They don't want him back.

3. He thinks the primary need for the team this off-season is : DT! followed by RB, G/C, and maybe another CB

4. He's going to miss Dunta but he didn't exactly praise his play this season... more or less, he excused his average play because he was returning from injury.
 
Good stuff! Can't believe I missed it, I have Sirius NFL on in my car all day. Interesting take on what he thinks our needs our. He wants a DT in there to keep guards off of him, can't say I blame him.

Also I wonder if there's more to the Dunta stuff, maybe some resentment now being unearthed that he's gone over his training camp tantrum. I'm sure it doesn't feel too good to bust your hump in the training camp heat and have one of your best players waltz in week 1 and get inserted right into the lineup.

I'm wondering why the relationship between a player and someone in the front office would even bother another player? There has to be more to this...

Is DeMeco saying it bothers him or is he just explaining that part of the reason Dunta left was his poor relationship with Rick?

You know its great stuff that we're hearing about this interview and everyone is bringing up some great questions regarding Dunta and the FO but is everyone disregarding item #1?

Thats what Im concerned with at this point.:gun:

No, it didn't seem to bother him. Solomon Wilcox was asking if the Texans might lose Dunta since he's going to be a UFA. Demeco answered it like it was a foregone conclusion. At that point, Wilcox followed up with a clarifying question and wondered if there were hard feelings from last off-season. Demeco said he thinks so. He didn't seemed bothered by it. He actually laughed about the shoe thing, saying it wasn't the best way to handle that situation.

I totally agree with you! We don't know what is going on but it sure is making me nervous. Hopefully, the front office has a plan in place beyond saving as much money as possible this year. I'd love to see there three year plan and also know in more detail what they are trying to accomplish with the rule changes this year. Maybe they are playing hardball with these guys and will eventually sign them to very moderated deals before the season... I just don't know!

You know, Im proabably pretty ignorant when it comes to the CBA but how does an uncapped year help the Texans? Doesnt that mean that any of the players can ask for as much as they want and our FO cant use the cap as an excuse?

If you know more info on this whole CBA deal and would like to break it down for me that would be awesome.

The Texans have core players (daniels, ryans, and pollard) who they can control with tender offers that would have been Unrestricted free agents. With the tender offers the Texans don't have to give them long term deals. Under normal rules they would had give all of them long term contracts or let them walk like they did with Dunta.

In about 10 months, we are either going to be fans of an emerging great team with years of winning ahead of us... or, I'm going to be agreeing with guys like SecondHoneymoon and Texecutioner that the organization is crap, McNair's not such a good owner, and it's time to start over.

It's a scary time to be a Texan fan!
 
Unfortunately, this is the ugly business side of the NFL. Like it or not, the rules state if no CBA is in affect, fourth year players are RFA instead of UFA. The Texans don't have to offer huge long term contract to RFA's, they can be tendered and they were. As fans, we want our "good guys" to be happy and under contract. I don't think the Texans are going to spend tons of money this off-season like I expect Dallas and Washington to do.

OK, so what happens if no one bites on the tender offer (like sproles 1st and 3rd)? I guess they stay and finish out the contract? Like with pollard, demeco, and OD, they all have at least one more year left on their contracts right which is why they are restricted. Next year they will be UFA correct?

If no other team offers them anything, the player either signs the tender (1 year contract) amount and plays for that in 2010 or hopes that the Texans will go ahead an negioate a long-term deal.

EVen if the player gets an offer, the Texans can choose to match the deal or take the state compensation.

I'm going to paraphrase what I said in the Chester Pitts thread. There's a right way and wrong way to treat people, even when the business side of things doesn't work out. Indications seem to point to the possibility that the Texans FO is full of jackasses that make it just a little bit more likely that players don't want to work with them.
 
I think some people are getting their bowels in an uproar over nothin.

What have they done that will cause players to not want to deal with them? They offered fair contracts to Ryans, Daniels, and Robinson that would have paid them all among the top players at their respective positions. Is that treating players unfairly? The ONLY thing Smith shouldn't have done have was tell DRob he wouldn't franchise him, but tagging him and paying him a guarateed 10 million is hardly treating him unfairly. Based on the way he played last year and in the way he acted I'm glad we didn't sign him long term.

Yeah, Rick will only have problems when he can't rely on RFA restrictions, franchise tags, etc. Ryans and Daniels aren't going anywhere.
