The percentage of first round DTs that are "can't miss prospects" and end up turning into huge busts is enormous. Its the MOST missed "can't miss" other than QB in the 1st round.
The percentage of first round Safeties that are "can't miss prospects" and end up turning into busts is tiny. I think its the LEAST missed "can't miss"
As good as Suh looks, remember how good previous DTs have looked. He hasn't played a down in the NFL, and he's got a legitimate chance of doing nothing.
Berry would be a much safer bet, but even then its a very risky propposition
Yep, here's a list of the DT's and Nose Tackles taken in the top 10 picks over the last 10 years (2000 - 2009):
Corey Simon (#6 in 2000)
Gerrard Warren (#3 in 2001)
Richard Seymour (#6 in 2001)
Ryan Sims (#6 in 2002)
John Henderson (#9 in 2002)
DeWayne Robertson (#4 in 2003)
Jonathan Sullivan(#6 in 2003)
Amobi Okoye (#10 in 2007)
Glenn Dorsey (#5 in 2008)
Sedrick Ellis(#7 in 2008)
B.J. Raji (#9 in 2009)
Gerrard Warren, Ryan Sims, DeWayne Robertson and Jonathon Sullivan are some of the top-10 busts of all time. While I believe Amobi's probably a season short of being a complete bust, there's a number of people on this MB who would tell you I'm being far too generous in that assessment, and Glenn Dorsey's in grave danger of being added to the Warren, Sims, Robertson, Sullivan group.
On top of that, no matter how good they are, DT's are not game-changers - and you don't give up your entire draft for a position that's not game-changing.
